As Christmas recedes into memory, it's easy to forget about the stress of the various celebrations and just remember the nicer parts of the holiday. For our characters in City of Heroes, of course, the holidays saw yet another onslaught by elemental minions of ice seeking to spread permanent winter. But the pot was sweetened a touch by the addition of the holiday contest, a chance for players to decorate their base or alter their costume in such a way that they became a bit more seasonally appropriate. Just a bit over a month out, the winners of the contest have been announced, and it takes only a quick glance at the artistry involved to see why. Bases were transformed from fortresses of solitude into... well, they were still sort of fortresses of solitude, but now they had appropriate decorations hanging from the icicles. Meanwhile, characters were transformed into crime-fighting ski bunnies and workshop elves. Giving City of Heroes players a chance to work their creativity almost always results in some excellent material, so feel free to take a look at the official page listing the winners and screenshots of each.

While many living up north enjoyed their white Christmas, many others are ready for all the snow to go away already. In the Lord of the Rings Online, it would appear that this Dwarf is either well into his holiday cups, or just feels like attacking snowmen to take his frustration out against the winter. This fun little snowman was found by Florin E., who writes in to tell us about it: I just saw the easter egg "little castle of sand" and I am really excited. I'm going to find it by myself, I love this. I do not know if you have already published this easter egg. Long time ago I was farming ore near Thorin's Gate and I found this snowman. Note: you can [also] see a little snowman in the Matthom house in the Shire. It's not too late to find those wintry holiday pictures and get those in to us! if you'd like to show off your favorite game's holiday celebration, just email your picture to us here at oneshots [at] massively [dot] com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. We'll post it out here and give you the nod for sending it in!%Gallery-9798%

While Godswar Online may not be one of the more commonly known names in the F2P world, they seem to be doing fairly well for a cute, fun free-to-play title. Apparently there are enough people playing that they've had to open up a brand new server -- their twenty-second -- and are calling it Iris. As a bonus for those who are interested, players who start their adventures on Iris will be given a special "Newbie Gift Package" for free. Each package includes goodies like health, mana, and experience bonus potions as well as other starting tools and items that will help a new player to Godswar Online out. Aside from that, they've also started a contest to tempt some veteran players (or perhaps new and hardcore) to Iris as well. The idea is this: if players can reach level 70 within the first 7 days of logging on, they'll be given a gift of 3,000 E-Gold (currently worth $16.50 USD) to spend however they like in the Godswar Online store. Between these two giveaways and their Christmas Egg Crack event going on until the 30th, it sounds like a festive and fun time for their players. If you haven't had a chance to see Godswar Online, we have a handful of screenshots from their shiny new server for you to check out. %Gallery-80994%

When it comes to holiday celebrations, nothing goes better with eggnog than rum. Of course, when you're playing a game like Pirates of the Burning Sea, breaking out the rum will inevitably bring around every stray pirate for hundreds of nautical miles. One such occasion happened recently on the EU server, Roberts, and was captured by today's One Shots contributor, Matt. We'll let him explain what went on: [Taken at] the recent Christmas event that was held. [Here's] a small part of the event description: "Nicholas Noël is known across the Burning Sea for his annual Junkanoo feast, however this year his rum shipments have drawn the attentions of De Zeetrekkers pirates, and he needs assistance!" Hope you like it. I thought it was great to see so many of the fantastic character designs in one spot.If you manage to catch a screenshot of a holiday event going on in your MMO of choice, why not mail it in to us! All you have to do is email them to us at oneshots [at] massively [dot] com along with your name, the name of the game, and a quick description. We'll post it out here and give you the credit for sending it in. %Gallery-9798%

  • Runes of Magic spreads holiday cheer all around

It's that time of the year again, something you could tell by stepping into any mall in the US where seasonal music is now being piped in all day long. There's a connection to be drawn between malls and Runes of Magic, perhaps, since both want you to be ready and willing to buy -- but that doesn't mean Frogster's game isn't willing to give you something as a bit of a present. A lot of games have holiday-themed updates, and Runes of Magic is no exception, but they're pulling out a bit more than usual for this year's celebration. The update for the game scheduled for mid-December promises to be fairly standard -- holiday-themed decorations in the cities, along with the chance to earn gifts and festive decorations by completing daily quests. But the advent calender is another story. Every day in December up to the 25th, a new piece of art is being put up for fans of the game to enjoy. The first three are already open, and the art work is certainly an attractive treat for the game's many fans. It might even entice you to stop in to the game itself and take a closer look at what they have to offer -- and it's better than going to the mall, since you won't have to listen to the Salvation Army band.
