If you're going to be buying on of those new Mac Pros, you're going to want to get snazzy monitor to get with it. And who makes the snazziest monitors around? That's right, Apple! Luckily, Apple dropped the prices of their monitors across the board. The 20-inch and 23-inch displays got a price cut of $100 (making them $599 and $899 respectively) while the monster 30-incher sheds 200 bucks for its price to retail for $1799.All of this has me wondering what will be announced on the 15th at NAB.Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Looks like Apple is getting ready to clear some shelf space in their stores with price reductions across their entire line-up of Cinema Displays. Both the 20- and 23-inch displays have been reduced by $100 making them $599 and $899, respectively. While the oh so luxurious 30-incher has been cut by $200 and now sells for $1,799. Not bad if you just have to have a matching LCD for your new 8-core Mac Pro desktop. We can't help but wonder what they're making room for, of course. Full fledged HDTVs to augment their move into the Apple TV living room maybe? Or perhaps multi-touch displays to make the most of all those super secret new features yet to be unveiled in Leopard? Hell, we don't know, let's just enjoy the price cuts for now, mkay?

Some guys (or girls) have all the luck. While it's true that I own many Macs, the vast majority of them (ok, all but two) weren't manufactured in this decade...and most of those don't really work. So you can understand why I'm jealous envious of prunejuice's (great name) snapshot featuring a Powerbook G4, 2GHz BlackBook, 23" Cinema Display, G4 Mac mini, DP G5 Powermac and bevy if iPods. Sheesh."prunejuice" posted by (who else) prunejuice. If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. We'll select an image every day to highlight.

  • 30 years in Apple products: the good, the bad, and the ugly

Has it really been 30 years since two buddies named Steve sold off their prized possessions (Woz's HP calculator and Jobs'  VW van) to raise money and launch a company? Has it really been 30 years since the two Steves, tired of selling blue boxes, built the Apple I and began selling it for $666.66? Yes, it has, and if you don't believe it, just compare Jobs' hairlines from '76 and today. And while the company has become known for many things, from its groundbreaking GUI to the iTunes Music Store, we know Apple has always been a hardware company at heart. So here's to you, Apple: the good, the bad and, yes, the ugly from the past 30 years. Happy Birthday.

  • 30" Cinema Displays receive a boost

It's not anything too major, but still notable. Eagle-eyed shoppers at the online Apple Store may have noticed a change in the 30" Cinema Display's specs. Specifically, brightness has been boosted to 400 cd/2 (from 270 cd/m2). Also, the contrast ratio is now 700:1 (from 400:1). The price remains the same, which is somewhere in the "you-can-get-four minis-instead" range (that's $2499US). Oddly enough, these specs match exactly those of the 30" Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP. Do what you will with that information.[Via Infinite Loop]

I wouldn't turn down either the Apple 30 inch Cinema HD Display or the Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP (also 30 inches) if someone wanted to give it to me. However, CNET has pitted these two monstrous monitors against one another to see which one is truly the best.Dell wins on price (it is $300 less than the Apple offering) and inputs, but overall quality of image and color reproduction puts the Apple display in the winner's circle, though only by a hair.It would seem that both monitors are good, but the Apple monitor is better.[via Engadget]

Flickr user, TUAW reader, and slayer of the living dead Zombie Killer is responsible for today's Rig of the Day. His home studio features two 20" Cinema Displays, a dual 2.0GHz Power Mac G5, a couple guitars, a couple of basses and a whole rack of fun stuff. The snapshot has been carefully notated, so you can check everything out."Studio" posted by Zombie Killer. If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Today's rig features a Cube with a case that has been modded to be clear. Nice Cinema Display, turntable and an original iPod (cool). It's pretty hardcore geek to want to stare at a computer’s interior parts, but I like it."My Desk!" posted by scottdog1515.If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Today's rig features one serious G5-powered home studio. A huge Cinema Display surveys its domain from on high. Not being a professional musician, I don't even know what most of that stuff is, so maybe reader metanut can enlighten us?"Studio" posted by metanut. If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Ok, everyone gather around for a group photo. Cinema CRT...you stand it the back, you're tall.Pictured here we find a 17" Apple CRT Cinema display connected to a dual 2.5 Power Mac G5, three sibling Powerbooks, plus an iBook, iSight, six iPods (yes, six) and a G4 Cube. That's either quite a personal collection, a gathering of many people's Macs...or somebody runs one heck of an Ebay business."Apple Products" posted by jpod999.If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. We'll select an image every day to highlight.Update: Regarding our Rigs of the Day series, reader Ron Martinez says, "There's a depressing sameness about the rigs - motley collections of Macs from multiple eras, with accessories and peripherals in a poorly framed photo. How about replacing ROTD with a Rigs of Distinction feature. When you get something truly new or noteworthy, or interesting for some unique feature (rig in a car, on a scooter, case mod, etc.) post that." Well, you heard the man! We want to see your killer set ups: The mini under your car's dashboard, the room full of Xserves, the SE/30 that is automating your home, your stack of every iPod model ever sold...even your Newton web server. Just upload them to our our group Flickr pool. We're not saying that we don't want to see your humble home set up (that's what most of us have, afterall), but don't hesitate to really knock our socks off.

Sure, the G5 Power Mac on the floor is cool, as is the iPod and the Xbox 360. But check out the four image-spanning displays! Is that TUAW on the Cinema display, with my Munsters post front and center? Seriously, could you run Photoshop on this setup or what?"Untitled" posted by scorpioca77.If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Last week we posted a rig that prompted reader minty95 to comment, "Loving the rig pictures, but hey guys, what's with being so tidy? How about a few messy desks over the next few days..." Ask and you shall receive.Today's rig comes from narcofiche, and features (among other things) a 20" Cinema Display, a dual 2.0 Power Mac G5, a silver iPod mini, a plastic Chewbacca head, some Ben & Jerry's (I prefer Chunky Monkey, myself) and...well, we're sure there's a mouse and keyboard in there somewhere. This snapshot takes me back to my college days. Ah, youth."messy desk" posted by narcofiche. If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Today's TUAW Rig of the Day entry (the inaugural entry, at that) is Flickr user visualseed's killer multi-display set up. We're talking about three 30" Cinema Displays, one smaller display, a Powerbook and a DV camera with three lenses, each the size of my leg. A G5 sits in the corner, as well as an iSight, a tablet and...what's that...a Dell?!? We'll just let that slide. I guess a pro photographer needs to diversify."Mac set up and more" uploaded by VisualSeed. If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool.
