  • FSU student receives misdemeanor charges after making threats on Xbox Live

Allieu Shaw, a student of Frostburg State University in western Maryland, has been charged with two counts of disrupting a school operation after threatening to shoot up his school during (what we can only assume was) a very heated match of Call of Duty 4 over Xbox Live. After making the threats, complete with detailed instructions as to how he was going to carry out the attack, one of his teammates contacted the Frostburg police department, who prompted an immediate lock-down of all schools in the Frostburg area. If convicted, Shaw could face a one year jail sentence or a $5,000 fine. One neat thing about this otherwise alarming story: The student who contacted the Frostburg police does not attend FSU -- in fact, he lives in Oregon, nearly 2,500 miles away from the school. It's refreshing to know there are complete strangers out there who are capable of putting down the controller for a few minutes to make a responsible, cautionary phone call -- regardless of the sincerity of Shaw's threats.

  • Big changes coming to Call of Duty 4 this month

It seems that more spots on our Friends list are devoted to people playing Call of Duty 4 than anything else, lately. Despite the e-success, the team at Infinity Ward is still tweaking the experience, evidenced by a bevy of changes that will be coming to the online portion of the game sometime this month. The changes are split between two groups: playlist and patch changes. The playlist changes are numerous, and really help to balance and perfect the online experience. Maps are being added to rotations, new playlist variations are being introduced, and some rules are being changed. As for the patch, there's an awful lot of network optimization, the addition of host migration (your party doesn't get booted if the host takes off) and, perhaps most importantly of all, Kill Cam view has been added to everything: claymores, RPGs, grenades, even fracking Air Strike Bombs ("follows bomb from plane to target" ... oh yes). The only thing we don't like about this updates? There's no ETA outside of the "month of December." Hit that 'Read' link for the full breakdown and start counting down the days.Update: Infinity Ward has clarified some details about the playlist updates and patch.

  • CoD4 title update and playlist changes are a coming

Our chum over at Infinity Ward, Mr. fourzerotwo himself mentions on his personal blog that a Call of Duty 4 title update and playlist update are nigh. Can we get a collective w00t for that? The title update will usher in a slew of multiplayer playlist changes that are so numerous, we don't have enough space to list them here, so you'll have to make the jump to read about them. Also, Infinity Ward will be releasing a patch independently from the playlist changes and it's aimed at fixing bugs, network issues and other general online problems. Both the playlist update and patch will release at separate times in the near future, so keep your eyes peelified. Happy fragging CoD4 fanboys!

Yes, for the cost of dinner at a sit-down restaurant (for two, natch), you can enjoy some of the best military action available. With such a hot game at such a low price, it's likely that it could sell out, so you'd best get to it quick. Seriously, why are you still reading this? Go buy it already![Thanks, Supafreak]

  • Call of Duty 4 not HD: only 600p, claim pixel counters [update]

    by

    11.22.2007

The pixel counters strike again! Having already conquered Halo 3 by proving the flagship shooter was 80 pixels below HD (defined here as at least 1280x720), the Beyond 3D forum members are now claiming Call of Duty 4 is only 600p (1024x600 resolution = 614,400 pixels) for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions - that's 120 pixels 307,200 pixels that have gone AWOL.The Beyond 3D posters have proven their dedication to pixel counting before with Halo 3, but since we haven't counted ourselves or seen the visual proof prevalent during Halo-gate, we're welcome to be proven wrong. Update: The tryptophan is starting to affect our ability to calculate. The difference between 600p and 720p (1280x720 = 921,600) is 307,200 pixels - which happens to be the exact number of pixels contained within 640x480 resolution.[Via X3F]

  • COD4 missing 120 p's, not running in HD

    11.21.2007

We're not sure what exactly is going on, but it seems like developers just can't get the hang of wrangling their p's. First, Halo 3 is discovered to be only 640p and now, according to a (very long) upscaling discussion on the Beyond 3D forums, Call of Duty 4 for the Xbox 360 is not running in 720p resolution. No, in fact, it is running in (gasp!) 600p. That's 120 p's missing. Where did these p's go? Have their families been notified? These are questions that need answering. Wait, what's that? The game is running with 2X anti-aliasing? Oh, well never mind then. Screw those p's. We never liked them anyway.[Via Evil Avatar]

We have a thing for randomly colored gray boxes, because they make us feel so darn techie.

We like us some Call of Duty 4, and based on Major Nelson's top ten Xbox Live titles for this past week, so do a lot of other gamers. The game placed second in the rankings, right below Halo 3, and right above a certain quartet of steroid infused, uber-masculine gunhavers.Infinity Ward isn't resting on their digital laurels, it would seem. Though the game has only been out eleven days in the states, they're already talking updates. The biggest change in their first planned update is a fix for the game's often fickle matchmaking and host selection, one of the few black marks against the title. Also, games will no longer end abruptly if the host drops out, and server performance on games with large numbers of players will supposedly improve. You can read the full list of gameplay changes after the jump.

Posted over on the official Infinity Ward forums, community relations guru fourzerotwo informs us that the Call of Duty 4 team has plans to release a title update for the game and previews some of the changes. The main focus of the title update will be to upgrade and improve both the game's Xbox Live matchmaking and host selection (thank lord!), but it will also include a few gameplay enhancements as a bonus. Highlights from the upcoming update include host migration, addition of "N0M4D" control scheme, identification of party by background color and the fixing of various lobby related bugs. You can view the complete list of upcoming CoD4 changes after the break, but know that you'll have to contain your excitement for a bit. Infinity Ward has yet to announce a release date for the update, so begin your waiting ritual ... now!

After publishing giant EA shut down its EA Chicago studio amidst profitability concerns, many employees found themselves burdened with the unenviable task of seeking employment elsewhere. 1UP points out that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward may just suffice as a potential "elsewhere." Over the weekend, a helping hand was extended through the World War Now shooter's "Message of the Day" screen: "EA Chicago: Infinity Ward is hiring. jobs@infinityward.com."

Spare a thought for Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 server team, which has been tweaking PlayStation 3 server performance all weekend -- and we're fairly sure that's just as exciting as it sounds. The developer's world-famous community relations manager, Mr. "fourzerotwo" has posted an update on the Infinity Ward forums regarding some stability issues encountered by the incoming glut of players. "The server team has been working on this all weekend, and will be working through the night," it reads. "They're upgrading all server hardware as well as dedicated an individual database to each functionality to improve performance and handle the traffic hitting the servers. (i.e. Database for Matchmaking, Database for Leaderboards, etc.)."The end result should be better speed and stability -- at least when it comes to matchmaking. They can't help you if you're still dropping grenades on your toes.

Many have experienced issues playing Call of Duty 4 on PS3. Why? Infinity Ward is reporting that the PS3 online multiplayer is being "slammed" by the incredible demand for the game. In a statement to CVG: "The only real issue is that the servers we're getting hit really hard, especially with the launch in Europe doubling that traffic, just something that requires optimising on the server side and we've been working with the PSN COD4 Server team from the moment it started having issues assisting any way we can to help them get them up to speed faster."The issue is with the servers, and won't require a patch to the game. The game, which has completely destroyed this blogger's weekend, is an absolute thrill ride that any PS3 owner should experience.

  • Help choose Call of Duty 4 artwork for free theme

A while back, the Charlie Oscar Delta crew asked the Call of Duty 4 community to submit artwork for use in an upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard theme. And now, after narrowing down the hundreds of entries, they've compiled a grouping of eight pictures and want the community to choose the top four. Then, after the voting ends a second time and the votes are tallied, those top four designs will be made into a theme and released for FREE as part of the "Charlie Oscar Delta Pack". We'll all get a free theme eventually, we just hope the community's artistic eye is top notch and we don't end up with one of those throw away themes. Vote away!

  • Call of Duty 4 suffering sellout syndrome

    11.08.2007

Don't be fooled by the headline: Activision's military shooter is not (necessarily) compromising its integrity and principles in exchange for money. Call of Duty 4 is seeing "extremely high demand" and subsequently inadquate supply.According to Nollenberger Capital Partners analyst Todd Greenwald (via GameDaily), "we've checked with a wide range of retailers (Gamestop, Wal-Mart, Target), and only pre-orders are being satisfied-stores are otherwise sold out of the title." The publisher's other recent major release, Guitar Hero 3, is also in the midst of selling out. The news does sound good for Activision, but just think about how much more money they could make off of downloadable content if they manage to meet consumer demand.

As planned, the demo for this PlayStation 3-exclusive title is heading to the PS Network today, along with a demo of College Hoops 2K8.Additionally, Sony is giving Motorstorm fanatics some more content. For Guitar Hero III, the Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver packs that were previously announced for Xbox Live will also be available on the PS3 for $6.25 apiece. An assortment of game videos and movie trailers, a new wallpaper featuring Call of Duty 4 is available for free, as well as three new themes (Classy Pink, Pixel and Nature) to spice up your new firmware update. More details after the break.Update: Sony notes on the PlayStation blog that the Uncharted demo will only work on American PS3 systems due to a bug. The demo is still undergoing localization and will see official release in other territories at a later date. [Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Call of Duty 4's Xbox 360 vs. PS3 comparison video

Squint really hard and take a couple pills of delusion and maybe, just maybe, you can see the difference between Call of Duty 4 on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the video above. Sure, maybe the dimorphic transgressive bump-mapping is fractalized on one of the consoles -- but we're not gonna say which one. What we can say is that the video above does show that we're finally starting to hit a better balance point between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation. This is a far cry from the Madden '08 comparison video where the differences were pretty clear even in an internet quality video. We'll take this as a good sign that we're moving away from having obvious performance differences and gamers can choose their multiplatform games based on controller preference and (if important) online experience.
