So, this week's Grinders is clearly not an MMO, which would be a gross infraction if it wasn't such a raw truth; whenever Team Fortress 2 undergoes a class update, the online gaming community all shifts to one side of the boat, dropping their MMOs to grind the new unlockable weapons. This of course means a certain shift in the team populations. Valve's trying something different this time with two class updates instead of just one, but see if that'll really help. Really.Have a funny story of your own? Submit your tale complete with a screenshot to lemuel@massively.com. As depicted in today's Grinders, there's a lot of variety to the jobs in Free Realms. However, not all of them are best suited for combat, as Morgan and Wendy experienced. Still, I think the idea of a kart racing class is pretty darned cool.Have a funny story of your own? Submit your tale complete with a screenshot to lemuel@massively.com. • Vote for your favorite Star Trek Online comic

Ten comics enter, one leaves with a beta key for Star Trek Online. That's the latest contest the folks at Cryptic are running, and they're letting the community vote! The one minor caveat is that you've got to have a forum account to actually place your vote, which is an easily resolved matter. We kind of wish that the comics had been re-sized a little, as some of them appear to be quite massive in dimensions. Nonetheless, there are some really great Trek-humor entries. Just be careful to go into these knowing that unless you watched a lot -- and enjoyed a lot -- of Star Trek, you probably won't really care too much for the humor. And while the art may not be the best in the world, it's an enjoyable effort by an obviously enthralled community.

  • Blizzard legal censures Shakes and Fidget

First the legal crackdown on fan-made iPhone apps, and now this: German-based webcomic Shakes and Fidget, a longtime sight in our Sunday Morning Funnies column, has apparently been smacked with a cease-and-desist by Blizzard. Our German isn't that great (and we've reached out to the comic's creators for further comment), but a translation of this forum page tells us that Activision-Blizzard's legal department suggested to them that there was enough similarity between the official game and the unofficial comic to cause a problem, and while they believe that they're covered under parody laws, they decided to take the "offending" comics offline anyway, and are apparently currently working on editing them so that they can be put back up without any issues.Obviously, since the comics are offline, we have no idea what material Blizzard objected to -- you could argue that depictions of certain gear created by Blizzard artists in the game or specific names are under trademark and thus could be protected under copyright law. But even then, Shakes and Fidget is one of many, many fan-made webcomics to obviously depict World of Warcraft and Blizzard-designed items specific to the game, and we haven't yet heard of any other webcomics that have been approached in this way.Still, as they might say in Germany, wir riechen eine ratte. Without knowing the exact nature of the comics that Blizzard had an issue with, this seems like a complete overreach on their part, especially considering that it's some of their biggest fans who are making these comics, and that many artists have portrayed many videogames in webcomics without anyone confusing the issue of whether they were official or not. We'll keep an eye out for more information (and we've also contacted Blizzard for comment) -- if you know of any other webcomics or fan artists who've been approached by Blizzard in this way, definitely let us know. Thanks, Henry!

Today's Grinders takes a little deviation from the earlier formats into a more political satire direction. Still, farming is a hot topic in any reward-driven MMO, and the recent farm wars have made the agrarian playstyle all the more relevant. Still, whatever your stance on the debate, you're always welcome to join those of us chuckling from the sidelines.Have a funny story of your own? This is probably a common gag for EVE players familiar with the Titan capital ships, and Arkhamina from GoonFleet was kind enough to share it for Grinders, along with this adorable little narrative:"Once upon a time, there was a sad Titan. All of his buddies had gone to Empire space to gank the freighters who were safely moving things around where Concord was there to protect them. Since Titans are not allowed there, he could not go play with his Goon friends, he wandered lonely alone, until he saw a Tempest, all alone. He opened his mouth wide and..... CHOMP."Have a funny story of your own? Submit your tale complete with a screenshot to lemuel@massively.com. Gender issues in MMOs are a low-hanging fruit for lampooning, but today's Grinders comes from Random Button, a girl gamer who sometimes prefers the big goofy characters to avoid attention. Backwards? Maybe. I can't vouch for the genders of the other featured characters, but I do want to thank them for rallying in Atlas Park to get in the feature. Thanks, heroes!Have a funny story of your own? Submit your tale complete with a screenshot to lemuel.pew@weblogsinc.com. I enjoy lore, and I enjoy comics. And if you're reading this, you're also probably like me and enjoy the World of Warcraft. So why not combine all those into a nice little contest?Blizzard EU is running a lore contest for their European customers, with the winners receiving a signed action figure. And sorry North American folks, right now this contest appears to be EU only. The quiz is a series of 10 questions, and while I won't give away the answers, the answer to number ten, "Who slays Onyxia?" is clearly "You and 39 friends, or just you." Because my solo warrior skills are just that leet.Head over to check out the rules and enter the contest, after all, you've got nothing to lose!Update: I wrote this article late yesterday evening, and at the time there was no North American version of the contest. However since then, Blizzard has posted a similar contest for North American residents. Enjoy!

  • Capcom Unity previews new Resident Evil comic mini-series

Capcom's Unity blog posted a preview of the new comic based on the Resident Evil universe as well as an interview with Ricardo Sanchez, writer of the upcoming six-part series. According to Sanchez, the series takes place around the same time as (and possibly before) the events of Resident Evil 5, introducing readers to a pair of new characters: BSAA rookie Mina Gere and weathered BSAA vet, Holiday Sugarman. Holiday... Sugarman. That's a name. That name... exists. The story begins aboard an international space station that Gere is sent to investigate following reports of T-Virus research. The simple investigation quickly goes south when the rookie finds herself alone in space with an infected crew (which, kind of sounds familiar). Sugarman -- still reeling from the loss of his family in a bio-weapon incident -- starts his adventure in Willy Wonka's Factory the fictional country of Grezbekistan (which Sanchez says would be found around Afghanistan or Turkey, part of the world). Eventually the story will bring the pair to South America where they will "encounter a variety of T-Virus and G-Virus infected monsters, some with new twists, that are part of the Resident Evil universe," Sanchez says. Unfortunately, Sanchez does not detail if readers will be able to walk (or run) while they enjoy the comic. We suspect they won't. The first issue of Resident Evil will hit stores this May.

Few beloved characters from our childhood have fallen quite as hard as Sonic the Hedgehog. After numerous franchise reboots that included an inappropriate romp with a Princess and a Werehog scare, Sonic looks to recapture an audience ... in comic book form! From the pages of Archie Comics comes Sonic Universe -- the monthly series, on its soon-to-ship second issue. Sonic Universe trails Shadow the Hedgehog and Metal Sonic taking their rivalry to a whole new dimension. Fans of the franchise will enjoy settle callbacks to simpler, and better, Sonic times, like the above flashback to Sonic Adventure 2 where Sonic and Shadow went Mano-e-Mano Hedgehog-e-(artificially created)-Hedgehog for the first time. Seeing as though this is published by Archie Comics, we can't wait to see the issue where Blaze the Cat goes up against Mr. Weatherbee.

  • Rumor: New Bone game coming in this spring

Here at Joystiq we hear a lot of rumors, but few that point and click on our hearts like news that Bone may be making a return visit to video games. This according to trade magazine Publishers Weekly, which casually mentioned a new Bone game while listing the final colorized take on Jeff Smith's renowned series amidst March's top selling comics. While unconfirmed, the publication notes the game will be released this spring, leaving us more than a little skeptical given that it's already March and nothing has yet been announced. Even so, we've reached out to developer Telltale Games for more information. Besides, since Telltale cast aside Phoney, Smiley and Fone Bone in 2006 for a lagamorph and a macrocephalic boxer, our gaming habit has been sorely lacking. Though mostly in stupid, stupid rat creatures. [Via VGTribune]
