  • Ask Massively: Shopping for new computers edition

I'm not having a great year for computers. Back in January, my much-loved netbook passed. I'd been having trouble with my desktop for quite some time after I bought it, and I'm pretty sure the processor is the root of the problems, but at this point it's just going to need a replacement. The plus side is that means that I have a large enough budget to afford a much better machine than I could when I bought this one, so it's almost a blessing in disguise. Of course, I'm writing this installment of Ask Massively on a computer, so clearly I'm capable of using such a device for important duties. Important duties like explaining why Final Fantasy XIV isn't offering players a free trial and why our comment system is experiencing a truly humbling bug. If you've got a question for a future installment, leave it in the comments below or mail it along to ask@massively.com. Questions may be edited slightly for clarity and/or brevity.

  • Ask Massively: These are not Firefall beta impressions edition

So near as I can tell from my limited time in the beta thus far, Firefall is a game in which you play a character with remarkably poor conceptions about the function of armor, especially if your character is a girl. I log in, jump around with a pair of rocket boots, and shoot things, and then my computer crashes for some reason after about 20 straight minutes of playing, so I haven't formed many other opinions. The parts I've played have been pretty satisfying, though. But as this week's headline for Ask Massively explains, these are not actually beta impressions. Instead, this is a column covering a couple of the weird issues with our new comment system, something that I have absolutely no doubt will come up again later. If you'd like to have a question answered in a future installment of the column, send it along to ask@massively.com or leave it in the comments below. Questions may be edited slightly for clarity and/or brevity.

Hey, remember that time when you guys were like, "Hey WoW Insider, when are you getting a new comment system?" And then we were like, "We're totally getting one real soon!" And then three years later, we were still using the same awful comment system that nobody ever liked? Yeah ... Well, guess what? We're getting a new comment system! Like, right now. This very second. Enjoy.

  • Ask Massively: I don't get the point of character customization in a first-person shooter edition

Seriously, I just don't get it. I'm not knocking the gameplay style -- yeah, it's not my preferred style of game, but I totally understand why people like it. But why spend a whole bunch of time deciding on what your character looks like in a game where you're never going to get to see it? I'm impressed with what they're showing off with this Gotham City Impostors video, but I just don't see the point in this particular setting. Obviously, I'm in the minority. In totally unrelated news, it's time for this week's installment of Ask Massively, which covers the matter of games that don't require the wholesale slaughter of wildlife. It also addresses our notorious and persistent spammer. (You know the one I'm talking about.) If you've got a question for a future installment of the column, you can leave it in the comments or mail it along to ask@massively.com.

  • Ask Massively: Look guys I found a picture of a man with a hat edition

When I took over this past weekend's Week in Review column, I informed the usual steward that I would probably give the post some Dadaist nonsense title like, well, the exact title I used for this week's Ask Massively. I realized that the title was really too good to use for just a generic roundup. I have no idea who that man is, why someone painted him with a hat, or any of that. But he definitely has a pretty awesome hat. This week we have a lot of administrative questions, talking about the comment system, the different types of MMOs, and the many different games which feature spaceships. And, as usual, we have the requisite silly question which I try to include every week, because you shouldn't click on a post with a ridiculous title without something to laugh at. Click on past the break for our answers for the week, and as always, leave further questions in the comment field, or send them along to ask@massively.com!

Have you been itching to add your own personal icon to your Massively comments but haven't had the time to create your own? Don't know even where to begin personalizing your icon? Well, you're in luck, because we here at Massively are all about making life easier for you, the reader. To that end we've put together a couple icons from today's top MMOs to get you started. To select a pre-made icon from the gallery below, simply download it to your desktop (right-click then save) and upload it to your profile. For those of you interested in making your own icons, it's a fairly simple process. Open up your favorite graphic editor (Photoshop et. al.) and create an image that is 64 pixels wide and 64 pixels tall. I recommend working with a larger image and scaling it down, since the format is a little small to work with. Be sure to save it somewhere easy to find -- those buggers are little, and blend in easily with the wildlife ensconced on your hard drive -- and voila, you've got a personalized piece of iconography of your very own.%Gallery-11142%

  • A word on commenting from Wii Fanboy

You might have noticed the other Nintendo-based Fanboy site received a nice little update today in the way of an improved commenting system. Well, the higher-ups (see: people paid in actual money) at our company saw fit to hook us up with the new system, as well. Tis the season of giving, after all.Of course, there is always some bugs that need to be fixed when starting something like this. And, we have our fair share of them. But, it's nothing you can't handle. In fact, when you look at it a certain way, you're kind of like the Indiana Jones of the internet blog-commenting community, finding secrets buried deep in the net where other men fear to tread. We salute you, fine reader. We salute you indeed.

  • Have you noticed our new comment system?

Just this afternoon, we rolled out our take on big daddy Joystiq's comment system. If you frequent that blog as well as ours, you may have noticed that some things are the same (the ability to vote comments up and down), and some things are different (we don't have those spiffy default Mario avatars, for some crazy reason). You may have also noticed that there are some issues with the new system. Hey, it's new; these things have been known to happen. But we're here to help, with a handy guide to getting your profile all set up, so that you can personalize your comments and prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet (with our deepest apologies to T. S. Eliot there).
