Publisher Xseed has unveiled plans to bring English-speaking gamers two quirky Japanese hits, the PSP's Brandish: The Dark Revenant and PC survival horror epic Corpse Party. For those unaware, Brandish: The Dark Revenant is a modern remake of the Super Nintendo cult hit Brandish, a roleplaying game developed by Falcom. Players star as Ares, a warrior who must battle his way through a multi-tiered, labyrinthine dungeon while being stalked by a sorceress who is as magical as she is half-naked. Though the title Corpse Party might suggest a dope rave populated entirely by undead club kids, the game is actually a pixelated horror adventure with roleplaying game elements. Players control a hapless group of five people who must band together to survive the supernatural horrors of Heavenly Host Elementary School - an institute of learning where nap time has been replaced by imminent death. Xseed has yet to determine a release date (or even window) for either Corpse Party or Brandish: The Dark Revenant, though the publisher claims that it will unveil trailers for each at the upcoming E3 conference. Corpse Party spins off into a series of new, smaller Corpse Parties next week, when the follow-up to last year's PSP game launches on PSN. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is a set of short stories set in the franchise's universe, each focusing on different characters as, if the first game is any indication, they get tortured relentlessly by ghosts. On the PlayStation Blog, XSEED localization specialist and professional Corpse Partier Tom Lipschultz introduces each of the stories, so you can get an idea about all the unfortunate kids you'll be putting through hell when you play the game.

  • Corpse Party butters up iOS in Japan

Corpse Party was a pleasant surprise on PSP -- well, "pleasant" in that it was a good game. There's nothing pleasant about being trapped in an inescapable nightmare dimension of malicious ghosts and dead children. And now it's moving to iOS, at least in Japan, where it will be even more convenient to access the game's unexpectedly disturbing imagery (and random asides about hemorrhoid cream).Publisher 5pb will release a port of the PC98/PC/PSP game Corpse Party Blood Cover Repeated Fear this Thursday, on February 9. The app will sell for the terrifyingly steep price of 2,200 yen ($29). We're inquiring with American publisher XSEED about a localized (hopefully cheaper) release.

Did you know that you can download handheld games now? That's amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. In each installment, we'll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Corpse Party. Technically, Corpse Party is a full-sized PSP game that just happens to be PSN-only, but it is a downloadable portable game, so I'm using this column as a convenient venue to talk about it. Because it is really, really cool. It may look cutesy and SNES-like, but the cognitive dissonance between that presentation and what is happening only serves to amplify the profound wrongness of every single moment of this game.

On today of all days, the haunt of all haunts, Corpse Party publisher XSEED chose to announce a November launch for its upcoming download-only PSP horror title. And while XSEED is "sorry to have missed Halloween," this carton of rotten eggs we plan on throwing in the company's general direction just isn't hearing it, frankly. At very least, the publisher has a decent explanation for the missed opportunity. "We wanted to make certain everything was perfect," a statement from XSEED localization specialist Tom Lipschultz on the US PlayStation Blog reads. He unfortunately didn't nail down a solid date for the game's launch, but did drop a brand new trailer, as seen above.

  • More details on XSEED's disturbing Corpse Party

The first announcement and trailer for XSEED's localization of Corpse Party focused on squicking us out with the game's premise -- a haunted elementary school filled with dead children -- but what about the actual game through which the squick is delivered? On the PlayStation Blog, XSEED Localization Specialist and chief Corpse Party booster Tom Lipschultz offered more detail on the gameplay. Corpse Party is a "horror adventure game" divided into five chapters, each focusing on a small group of characters trying to escape from the school. Rather than a "visual novel" style (like 999), "most of the game is fully interactive, allowing you to walk around and explore Heavenly Host Elementary as you see fit, carefully examining objects and piecing together the sordid history of the school at every turn." You'll have to make decisions about what to do, which could lead to a "bad" ending. At other times, you'll have to move quickly to escape a pursuing ghost or leave a trapped room, or you risk joining the party.

We didn't have to wait long for the suspense to end regarding XSEED's mystery game: it is, in fact, Corpse Party for PSP, and it will be released as a download this fall. Corpse Party, originally created in RPG maker before being remade for PSP by publisher 5pb, is the story of a group of high schoolers "trapped in a haunted elementary school filled with the decaying corpses and tormented souls of countless children who'd mysteriously vanished from the Japanese countryside years, months or sometimes only days prior." Even though the game is presented primarily in 16-bit sprite-based RPG style, the premise definitely has the potential to be very spooky, with XSEED promising "decidedly uncensored horrors." In addition, a "3D audio" gimmick adds atmospheric, directional sound. Check out a trailer above, but be warned: there is some disturbing imagery. Just in case you didn't figure that out from the game's title.%Gallery-132378%

  • XSEED creeps us the hell out, teases new game

XSEED Games is teasing a new release this fall with two videos that are mysterious, disturbing, and, occasionally, cute (thanks to some anime-style art). One teaser video features game artwork and a narrative about being forced into cannibalism to survive; the other features XSEED localization specialist Tom Lipschultz being creepy. The art seen in the first video is also found in the PSP game Corpse Party, a PSP adaptation of a game built in RPG Maker, suggesting that it is the game being teased. Lipschultz refused to confirm the identity of the game in a comment on Siliconera ... but he did go on to talk about how much he liked Corpse Party. [Thanks, Christian]
