  • Sony teases something smarter, our money's on Xperia

Sony's website is slowly ticking down the hours, minutes and seconds until the company's latest product launch, but like all other Sony teasers in recent memory, there's little real doubt. If references to "X10" peppered through the site's source code left any doubt, this picture should clear it up -- mark our words, that's an Xperia X10 underneath the clock. Apparently the four-inch Android smartphone is finally ready for its US debut, though whether it's "smarter" or no will probably depend on which version of the OS it ships with. Expect an AT&T launch, and be sure to read our full review. Update: As numerous commenters and tipsters have pointed out, Sony hasn't gone to much trouble to hide what's going on -- all you need to do to see the trademark Xperia logo is drop that image into a photo editor and crank up the brightness. [Thanks, Jason]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/PlanetSide_reveals_a_mysterious_countdown_on_their_site'; Last we checked, PlanetSide was up and running. The game's not still in beta, no announcements of anything imminent on the way, right? Well, maybe not. Sony Online Entertainment added something to the PlanetSide site this evening with no fanfare or announcements of any sort: a countdown clock and a comic. The countdown clock currently sits at 18 days, 6 hours, and a whole bunch of minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. The comic is set "in a secret laboratory high above the mountains of Searhus" and features the familiar Big Red Button in the last panel. So what happens when that big red button gets pushed? Well, let's get the obvious guess out of the way first. The game is approaching its seventh birthday, so it's the right time of year for a big announcement of some sort or another. We'll keep our eyes peeled for more information, and in the meantime feel free to join in the forum discussion thread about what this could all mean.

Keen-eyed reader Jester has alerted us to an interesting clue that might be Cryptic's way of telling us what their other MMO in development might be. On their front page, Cryptic has a small countdown clock with a lovely space background, but no other text over it.Over at Star Trek fansite Trekcore, they've posted a ton of the concept artwork that had been previously done by Perpetual for the Star Trek Online before it got canceled. One of the pieces is the same blue-washed planet scene immediately discernible as the background for Cryptic's countdown timer. We've inset the clock into the concept piece for your viewing pleasure above. Is this a smoking gun? Or, rather, a plasma-venting core?
