How times have changed. Today's news that Burnout Paradise's upcoming Legendary Cars pack will be arriving on consoles this Thursday, February 19th, comes directly from Criterion games via Twitter. Not a press release or forum announcement in sight. Need more proof that we're living in the future? How about flying cars in Paradise City? That's just one of the new vehicles available in the Legendary Cars pack, all of which are based on famous fictional vehicles. There's no word on pricing yet. Perhaps Criterion will be kind enough to tweet that info before the pack releases on Thursday. Check out the gallery below for more images of these Legendary Cars.%Gallery-41360%[Thanks, Rahul]

Click image for more evidence It seems the lazy and inattentive police officers of Paradise City have begun to frown upon the frantic racing and wreckage filling their city, with rumor indicating the return of police cars or possibly pursuits to Criterion's racer. Some scenes depicting the blues in red-hot chase have already spilled onto the internet, as you can see in our gallery below. You can see the potential pursuit mode that showed up in the new Burnout Store right here, as well as images for a new cop car in the game. Will these become available as DLC in the future? We've asked for comment and we'll get back to you as soon as we get word.%Gallery-43378%[Thanks, Eric]

As you're aware, the upcoming premium DLC for Burnout Paradise will throw four new cars into the mix on Paradise Island. While we've only really spotted the Jansen-88 Special in action, three of the wholly original creations have been kept under wraps ... until now. On the latest episode of CrashTV, Criterion Games have revealed the final three vehicles. Say hello to the Manhattan Spirit, above. You may recognize it ... but trust us it isn't what you think it is. If you told us in January that we'd still be excited about Burnout Paradise a year after it released, we'd call you crazy. Games, as we all know, tend to lose their luster over time unless something drastic revitalizes our love affair with them. What could jolt us back into Paradise City? 1.21 Gigawatts? Close. The Jansen 88 Special, one of four new vehicles hitting the streets of Paradise City in the New Year. This virtual DeLorean clone features retractable tires, sending the nuclear-powered car into the air at breakneck speeds. Just remember to save those points kids because this DLC asks a price. Great Scott! Hey, for the amount of free DLC Criterion Games threw at us all year, who can complain? Check out Criterion Games' holiday greeting video featuring the Jansen 88 Special, embedded above. To learn more about 1.21 Gigawatts, jump in for an informative music video.

What it lacks in a Flux Capacitor and time circuits, Burnout Paradise's hover-enabled "Jansen 88 Special" more than makes up for in its ability to make us drool, as evidenced in new footage released by Criterion Games. View it after the break! The car, which certainly meets with Doc Brown's seal of approval, is one quarter of the upcoming Legendary Cars Pack, which will also include the Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and GT Nighthawk. Now, if only our Flux Capacitor would start fluxing so we could leap ahead a few months and try this DLC out for ourselves.

Criterion has announced that its upcoming Burnout Paradise downloadable content Big Surf Island, contrary to previous statements in the developer's podcast, will no longer be offered gratis. Said the developer, "Big Surf is the culmination of everything we learned creating Paradise City, and we want it to bring you a truly spectacular new experience – the highlight of a year of incredible premium content."Surf Island will focus heavily on stunts -- in Criterion's words, the mantra is, "If you can see it, you can drive it." What we don't know at the moment is how much it will cost, or when it will be made available. The car shown in the images, the Dust Storm, will also be available the same time as Surf Island, although there is no indication if it will be free or premium DLC. If you haven't jumped on the Burnout Paradise bandwagon (and subsequently rammed it into a busy intersection, sending the bandwagon flying into a nearby construction site), the Ultimate Box edition is coming in February 2009. After numerous updates, free content and even motorbikes, Criterion will be bringing a set of paid Legendary Cars to Burnout Paradise in 2009. This week, they unveiled the first of four, the Jansen 88 Special which is based on the fan favorite Jansen P12. And the first thing you'll notice is that this Back to the Future inspired ride can hover. Yes sir, a hovering, flame trail creating Jansen 88 Special that (sadly) lacks the ability to travel back in time. Keep on the look out for more Legendary Cars reveals in the weeks to come (Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and GT Nighthawk) and remember to change your car's oil every 3,000 miles.[Thanks, Cube]

Besides the Lamborghini Countach-lookalike, the Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and the GT Nighthawk will also be made available as DLC -- no price point has been decided, but you can purchase them individually or cheaper if you buy them as a set.[Thanks, squirtforce!]%Gallery-12560%

Checked out CriterionGames.com recently? You might have noticed that they've completely revamped the site. Not only does it look swish and sexy, but it harbors some interesting information about upcoming Burnout Paradise content. You know, that game which came out in January but which people are still playing today? The game that's had copious amounts of free downloadable expansions and which was the first third party disc-based title to patch in trophies?Four new expansions are listed on the "coming soon" section of the new Criterion Games website. While at the moment they're simply numbered packs, they will be unveiled, one by one, over the next four fridays, starting on October 31st. The only other information we're given about these packs is that we expect to see them arrive in Spring 2009. So after all this year's great games are played and forgotten, we're convinced we'll still be playing Burnout Paradise well after a year since release. We'll keep you informed as and when these expansion packs are unveiled.[Thanks Andrew Gaspar]

  • Obama ad appears in Burnout Paradise [Update]

    10.14.2008

[Update -- Though Ms. Rockwood was unclear in her response to Gigaom, MTV Multiplayer has discovered that, for whatever reason, the ad only appears in the Xbox 360 version. Furthermore, a certain AlexW at Criterion Games have stepped forward to say the advertising in Burnout Paradise do not fund the awesome updates they've been providing. So now the question is, what do they fund? Thanks, Enrique!]Enjoying those free Burnout Paradise updates? Well, they are free partly due to the in-game advertisements, such as this one placed by Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama. Holly Rockwood, director of corporate communications at Electronic Arts, has confirmed that the above ad is an official one placed by Senator Obama's campaign team.Rockwood explains that EA will "accept advertising from credible political candidates ... Like political spots on the television networks, these ads do not reflect the political policies of EA or the opinions of its development teams."Obama's use of in-game campaign ads strikes us as a bit strange -- because as of yesterday, Senator Obama is still placing television and video games (and yes, bad parenting too) at the forefront of the causes for underachievement.[Via Joystiq]

  • Burnout Paradise PS3 Trophies patch released, not retroactive

Folks, we've got good news and bad news. Okay, the good news first: Criterion Games has released a patch for Burnout Paradise that adds Trophies. The bad news is those Trophies are not going to be awarded retroactively. Despite having previously stating they were "thinking ahead" with Trophy support, the developers said today, "We had hoped to use this to retroactively award trophies, but we discovered during testing that this is not possible." A new game save will be required. Criterion notes this is the same as with all other PS3 games that patched in Trophies. Though that's true, we're admittedly a bit bummed since we had been replaying the game under the promise that we'd retroactively get some (online) street cred for our PSN ID. [Via PS3 Fanboy]

The trailer ends with a very honest plea for you to buy the game if you haven't -- especially with even more content coming down the pipeline. Us?
