  • Crytek discussing possibility of TimeSplitters 4, needs Crysis 2 shipped first

Our anticipation for Crysis 2 just skyrocketed for a terrible, terrible reason. See, in a recent interview with CVG, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli responded to a query about the possibility of a new entry in the TimeSplitters franchise by saying, "Yeah, we have been discussing it, but nothing has been confirmed yet, so let's see after Crysis 2." The developers of the chronologically unstable series, Free Radical, were purchased by Crytek back in 2009, and now have their hands full with developing Crysis 2's multiplayer component. Don't get us wrong -- we're definitely looking forward to Crysis 2 based solely on its own merits as an innovative first-person shooter. But we also want a new TimeSplitters, and if that means we have to ship Crysis 2 before it's ready to free up resources, then, well, that's an egg we're willing to break.

Try not to be too jealous of your console-bound brethren, dear PC gamers. Though Xbox owners have been enjoying the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo since it went "Live" on Tuesday, you'll be able to get your hands on its Nanosuit-infused gameplay soon enough. Crytek announced the demo's PC release on Twitter, saying, "At this time, Crytek & EA are glad to confirm that we'll be releasing a pre-launch Crysis 2 multiplayer demo on PC! Stay tuned for details." We'll let you know when said details emerge -- until then, we suggest you start planning what types of enhancements you want built into your super-powered soldier. Ours, for instance? He can jump really high, withstand a lot of bullets, and also, he's a very proficient public speaker. [Thanks, Sang]

  • Crytek 'working to resolve' Crysis 2 multiplayer demo issues

In a statement printed on its website, Crysis 2 developer Crytek says it's aware of issues regarding the Xbox Live-exclusive multiplayer demo, and is "working to resolve" them "as quickly as possible." Known issues include sudden disconnects from servers and, for some, constant console freezing when first joining or concluding matches. We'll be sure to pass along word when Crytek's ironed out the bugs in its billion-dollar nanosuit, but in the meantime it appears we're all stuck playing the waiting game while waiting to play the game.

Having spent quite a bit of time with the first game on PC, I found myself in a far better position at the outset than most when suiting up for the sequel, Crysis 2, at a recent multiplayer preview event at San Francisco. That isn't to say that Crysis 2 is the same as the first game; Crytek has streamlined the use of the game's core feature, the Nanosuit, through a surprisingly intuitive control scheme, giving you the ability to utilize more than one suit function at the same time. This gives Crysis 2 more tension and asks you to work harder to manage the suit's myriad functions, making for a much more enjoyable and energetic multiplayer experience compared to its predecessor. %Gallery-114903%

  • Crysis 2 multiplayer demo hitting Xbox Live exclusively on Jan. 25

When it's not being used as a great punchline for that joke about the microbe visiting the tailor (it's not that good), the nanosuit is trotted out as Crysis 2's superhuman advantage over other first-person shooters. Crytek and EA hope to make that clear in a Xbox-exclusive multiplayer demo, set to launch on January 25. Xbox Live Gold members who download the demo will gain access to two modes, the "Skyline" map -- just one of many set in a demolished New York City -- and the nanosuit, which can augment your speed and strength, or lower your visibility. In the "Team Instant Action" mode, two groups of players attempt to kill as many enemies as possible, whereas "Crash Site" has you and your comrades capturing and guarding alien pods. Crysis 2's multiplayer component is developed by Crytek UK, which was formed from failed TimeSplitters developer Free Radical. The full game, due on March 22, will offer six multiplayer gameplay modes, 12 maps, a leveling system -- and nanosuits for all! Check out a new trailer after the break.

If you have no idea what Crysis 2 is all about, then this trailer is a good primer. Basically: aliens invade, dude dons crazy nanosuit, does crazy stuff. It's pretty much the same exact plot as that Jackie Chan movie, The Tuxedo. We just hope Crysis 2 skips the awful song-and-dance number.

  • Crysis 2 adapted for 'Legion' novel in March 2011

Vindictive aliens descend upon New York. A malicious plague cripples the shaken city's human inhabitants, who can only fall backwards into the outstretched arms of a cyborg saviour. (He had to put his guns down for just a moment.) So, pretty out there material for a video game, but perhaps the gloomy premise could be better explored in an older medium? Set to debut in March 2011 under the Del Rey banner, Crysis: Legion will adapt Crytek's upcoming first-person shooter into a novel, written by Hugo Award-nominated author (and ex-marine biologist) Peter Watts. Watts' characters and tone haven't been known to elicit smiles -- if you want a sample of his dark science-fiction you can read Blindsight online, thanks to its Creative Commons license. Peter Watts is the second well-known sci-fi author to be associated with Crysis 2, which is being written for the high-definition screen by Altered Carbon's Richard Morgan. Watts will be seen as the real genius, though -- he's getting Crysis to run on a Kindle.

  • Crytek sees a 'very long-running' franchise in Crysis

Crysis 2 may still be on the horizon, but Crytek already sees a future in which Crysis is a vastly popular franchise with several sequels. "It's in our best interest to grow Crysis into a very long-running franchise. Maybe that means Crysis 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 ... Crysis Infinity," executive producer Nathan Camarillo said in a recently published interview with Eurogamer. (We imagine Bam Margera doesn't show up until at least number seven, a la the Tony Hawk series.) "It's the start of a new future for Crysis. We're taking it very seriously," Camarillo said, adding, "That's all I can really say about it. We wouldn't put this much effort into it if this were where it was ending. That doesn't make sense." And, despite earlier ambiguity, he further solidified the future of the series by outright stating, "We plan on growing it into a big franchise." So there you have it! Crysis 3? Confirmed ... alongside Crysis 12.

Last month, EA sent out invitations to a Crysis 2 closed beta on the Xbox 360, and now one apparent player has uploaded this sharp-looking video preview of ... the preview. Don't think looking this good comes easy, though -- do you even know how much the dry cleaning bill for a suit like that costs?

EA has released a video detailing the bonuses included with the Limited Edition of Crysis 2, which you can see after the break. This special release of the game, which includes a SCAR weapon skin, hologram decoy, a unique Platinum Dog Tag and bonus XP, is somewhat less exciting than the Nano Edition, which adds a statue and a backpack -- but, of course, it's more exciting than the standard edition, which only includes ... Crysis 2. Prepare for the medium level of excitement, is what we're saying.

The Gamescom awards have been handed out by an "expert jury" from the publishing and media sector, with Gran Turismo 5 taking the "Best of Gamescom" award. Unlike the E3 Game Critics Awards, which is a collaborative effort by outlets you've heard of, the Gamescom accolades appear to come from six folks whose names we don't quite (be polite, be polite!) ... recognize. The short list of winners selected by the brotzeit club were: Best of Gamescom: Gran Turismo 5 (Sony Computer Entertainment Deutschland GmbH) Hardware accessories: PlayStation Move (Sony Computer Entertainment Deutschland GmbH) Console games: Gran Turismo 5 (Sony Computer Entertainment Deutschland GmbH) Mobile games: Super Scribblenauts (Warner Bros. Games) Online games: Guild Wars 2 (NCsoft West) PC games: Crysis 2 (Crytek GmbH) Best of Family Entertainment: Kirby's Epic Yarn (Nintendo of Europe GmbH) Those are certainly some adequate choices, but considering the international presence and size of the show, it would seem prudent that the Gamescom awards seek out a better mix and quantity of judges for future shows. %Gallery-99887%

EA has announced that, for a limited time at launch, a Limited Edition of Crysis 2 will be available for the same price as the standard edition. In other words, "buy the game immediately." The "Limited Edition" includes bonus experience points in multiplayer, a "SCAR Hologram Decoy" that allows players to project an image of themselves, a "SCAR Weapon Skin" in digital camouflage, and an in-game Platinum Dog Tag. Not extravagant enough? EA also announced the Crysis 2 Nano Edition, which despite its name is quite a bit larger. It'll include the Limited Edition of the game, a steel case, an 11" statue of the protagonist atop an NYC taxi, and an art book. And all of that's inside a backpack (designed to resemble the Nanosuit). This outrageous special edition will only be available via pre-order from EA, for $149.99, £119.99, or EUR 129.99. In addition, EA announced that a closed beta will be held for Xbox 360 players "later this year." Enjoy some new gameplay footage after the break, and learn about the announced multiplayer modes here.%Gallery-99640%

We learned during EA's investors briefing that the super-pretty, skyscraper-toppling FPS Crysis 2 had been pushed from its initial holiday release window, and would instead arrive during the first quarter (January to March) of 2011. The game's new release date was recently pinpointed by the official Crysis 2 Twitter account: March 22, 2011 for North America, and March 25 for Europe. Or, in other words, just about as late in the first quarter as it could possibly arrive. Joining this announcement was the release of the first screenshot depicting the game's multiplayer component, posted above. Though it's hard to extrapolate much from the single image, it looks like everyone's going to be wearing bulletproof armor, which should make your standard deathmatch a rather lengthy affair.

  • Crysis 2 falls to 2011 in EA financial report

Crytek's apocalyptic FPS appears to have slipped into next year. Although previously planned as a "holiday" release (Q4 2010), EA's latest financial report places Crysis 2 in the first quarter of 2011 (January–March). Barring any further changes, Crysis 2 joins a rather crowded lineup for early 2011, including EA's own Dead Space 2, Bulletstorm, Darkspore, Fight Night Champion, and the newly confirmed Need for Speed: Shift 2. It appears next year's first quarter will be just as hectic as this year's was. EA may offer further insight into the delay during its investor call, happening now. Stay tuned for updates.

The latest trailer for Crysis 2 takes us through the area demoed during EA's E3 press conference. Sure, it looks just as slick as it did last week, but we're confused by the area's "Safe Zone" label. Between the giant killer robots, the average-sized killer robots and toppling MetLife building, we fail to see said zone's inherent safety.

EA has claimed that Crytek's Crysis 2 will be the first "true 3D" game for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. This is likely EA's marquee 3D title promised at the last Electronic Arts investor call. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli stated that the "3D revolution" is part of the team's continued "strive to raise the technology bar ... The 3D experience represents a quantum leap in interactive entertainment. With all of the same story and action seen in the 2D version of the game, the 3D version adds another dimension of intensity and immersion to the action." But can your PC TV run it?

Excited about Crysis 2 but can't wait until the game arrives later this year? You could probably don a Nano Muscle Suit and spend the summer looking like a psychotic person -- or you could go over to the MyCrysis community page and sign up for an account, granting you a chance at early access to the beta. "What beta?" you say? Yep, turns out that Crytek is working on giving fans early access to its upcoming sequel. Details are slim right now, with Crytek only saying that "early registrations" to the soon-to-be relaunched community site "will be tracked, and our first wave of users will have a chance to win a key as and when the Crysis 2 beta takes place." Presumably that's just PC users for now, but we've reached out to Crytek for clarification all the same. The relaunch has yet to take place, but is promised to be "coming soon" according to the game's Facebook page. And hey, that personal Nano Muscle Suit might come in handy for hitting refresh in your browser window really, really fast.
