Strategy fans looking to get their fix on their shiny new iPad can now download an enhanced version of Square Enix's Crystal Defenders. Available for $7.99, the 69MB download provides new ... graphics. It's literally just a higher-res version of the game that's currently available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, though it surprisingly sports the same price as its lower-res counterpart. Feel free to check out the cleaner sprites of the iPad version in our gallery below. And if you're looking to try before you buy, remember you can run the Lite version of the iPhone version for free on your iPad. • Square Enix releases Chaos Rings on iPhone, discounts other iPhone games

Square Enix's impressive-looking iPhone RPG, Chaos Rings, is now available from the App Store. If you'd like to try it, you'll have to pay the iPhone equivalent of the Square Enix Tax, as the publisher has priced the Media Vision-developed RPG at $12.99. Chaos Rings is the story of four couples (each in its own storyline) summoned to fight to the death in a tournament for some mysterious reason. The "couple" theme forms the strategic element of battles: you have to decide when to use combined attacks that also open both party members to damage. Paradoxically, the release of this expensive-for-iPhone game also brings savings. To promote the launch of Chaos Rings, Square Enix put its other iPhone games on sale. Among others, Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are now $6.99 each, Crystal Defenders is now $5.99, and Sliding Heroes has temporarily reached the magic $.99 price point. Even the Final Fantasy XIII gallery is on sale, priced at Still Too Much.

  • Crystal Defenders attacking PSP

What's Square Enix's most prolific game this generation? Well, apparently it's Crystal Defenders, a 2D tower defense game that's appeared on iPhone, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii ... and PSP, according to the German USK ratings system. Considering the low-fi quality of the graphics (the Xbox 360 version is in the video above), it shouldn't be a very difficult game to port.[Via GamerBytes]

There's plenty of content to nom on in this latest PSN update. WipEout HD Fury and the Killzone 2 pack make up for the fact that there's no LittleBigPlanet DLC this week. Not only that, but Shatter is now available and has been joined by a surprise addition in the form of Final Fantasy: Crystal Defenders. PSP owners have much less content to choose from, and if you don't own Rock Band Unplugged or Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce, there's nothing for you here. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

  • Square Enix's 'Vanguard Storm' is more Crystal Defenders, but not tower defense

It turns out that the Square Enix Vanguard Storm trademark from last month was merely the subtitle for another Crystal Defenders game, available now for $5 on iPhone and iPod Touch (there's a "lite" version to demo). Siliconera notes that Vanguard isn't a tower defense game, but a "monster blocking game," as evidenced by the video after the break. Instead of a tower defense game where enemies are on a path, Vanguard has enemies moving from left to right. The player is charged with adding the proper character classes to block the monstrous onslaught. No console releases of the game have been announced, but other Crystal Defenders titles started on mobile and moved to home consoles.

This week, 360 fans get both Crystal Defenders and Peggle. As luck would have it, both games are actually pretty good. Two good games in one week? What have we done to deserve this? Of course, they aren't free -- they're 800 each. Still, they're both worth at least trying. Check out the latest episode of XBLA in Brief and see if either one is for you. • This Wednesday: Peggle, Crystal Defenders & NCAA Basketball MME [update]

    by

PopCap Games' alarmingly addictive Peggle and Square Enix's Crystal Defenders will both be releasing to the Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, March 11 for 800 ($10) each. That is, if Major Nelson and his podcasting co-host, e, can be trusted (we think so!). This week's Peggle release isn't all that surprising, seeing that a recent press release confirmed a March release, but hearing that Crystal Defenders will complete this Wednesday's XBLA twofer, well ... that's just out of left field. Not that we're complaining or anything, we're just overjoyed that Bjorn will be giving our 360 an incurable case of "Extreme Fever." Update: NCAA Basketball MME is out too! (No demo available.) [Thanks, Liam G.]

  • ESRB rates Crystal Defenders R1 & R2 for Wii

The ESRB has left the vault door wide open, revealing a rating for the long rumored North American WiiWare release of Crystal Defenders R1 and Crystal Defenders R2. Taking place within the Final Fantasy Tactics universe, Crystal Defenders is a Tower Defense style game from publisher Square Enix that takes place after the events in Final Fantasy Tactics A2.Originally a mobile phone title -- and soon to be released on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Store -- Crystal Defenders will see an episodic release for the Nintendo Wii. Being history buffs we can see that the Japanese release of each episode clocked in at 1000 Wii Points ($10 USD) apiece, and since history often repeats itself, it's a good chance those prices will remain the same in North America. Let's hope history is ignored this time.

Arc System Works finally brings the classic Double Dragon to Japan's Virtual Console today. In the US, we've been lucky to have the opportunity to be killed by those two Abobos who come out of the cave since April! However, our "victory" in the Double Dragon availability department is eclipsed by the availability of Wallaby!!, a kangaroo-race betting game that will most certainly remain in Japan. Double Dragon (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) Wallaby!! Usagi no Kuni no Kangaroo Race (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) Once again, WiiWare is the real attraction in Japan, with downloadable Mr. Driller and the second installment of Square Enix's Crystal Defenders series. Mr. Driller World (1 player, 800 Wii Points) Crystal Defenders R2 (1 player, 1,000 Wii Points)

The WiiWare release of Square Enix's Crystal Defenders tower defense game is episodic, based (loosely) on the three releases of Crystal Guardians for cell phones. Square Enix released Crystal Defenders R1 in Japan last month, and it is following up with R2 next Tuesday. The new episode swaps out some character classes, adding new classes like the Hunter, Flintlock, and Berserker, while leaving others like the White Monk out. R2 adds a "Power Crystal" system that uses crystals of different colors to boost character stats. The new game comes with more difficult maps, as well.Square Enix has yet to announce a release for the WiiWare Crystal Defenders games outside of Japan. But since it released the iPhone version here, we doubt it will pass up the opportunity to earn our Wii Points.[Via Siliconera]

  • Crystal Defenders R1 site opens with screens and trailer

Just one day after the WiiWare version of Crystal Defenders (now Crystal Defenders R1) was revealed by (early) Famitsu scans, Square Enix has opened the official Japanese website for the iPhone/mobile remake. Not since Lock's Quest have we been ... even slightly excited about a tower defense game!We saw blurry, small screens of the game in those scans, but the website features pixel-perfect screens, highlighting the colorful, somewhat retro 2D style and cute sprites. Even better, larger screens can be found at Famitsu. The official site also features a trailer and a rather large selection of wallpaper images -- all of which seems delightfully lavish for a WiiWare game! But, then, this is only the second (non-Taito, internally-developed) WiiWare game for SE. They can afford to put a nice website together for each one.[Via Famitsu]

  • Square Enix's Crystal Defenders to defend Live Arcade

We once speculated that Frogger 2 began life as a mobile phone game, but now it looks like XBLA is getting one for real. Famitsu (via IGN) reports that the Square Enix mobile game Crystal Defenders is headed to Xbox Live Arcade, the PSN and WiiWare. For those not familiar with the game, its a tower defense title that first saw release on mobile phones and the iPod (check out a trailer here). Though the article is apparently unclear, it seems that the XBLA and PSN versions are different from the WiiWare version as the magazine refers to them as "evolved ports" of the original.Details on the release date and price have not yet been announced. As XBLA currently lacks any sort of real time strategy -- though there is a decent turn based game -- we'll be keepying our eye on Crystal Defenders.

Crystal Defenders, Square Enix's mobile and iPod* tower defense game, is ready to make the move to consoles. Japanese mag Famitsu reveals (via IGN) that the WiiWare version will be known as Crystal Defenders R1. Aside from the fact that it'll offer "Wi-Fi connection support," little else is known about the title. Crystal Defenders R1 will be ready to protect the Wii in Japan on January 27 for 1,000 Wii Points. The XBLA and PSN versions, which will allegedly be updated forms of the original game, currently have no price nor release date. Check out a trailer of the mobile game here.*Regular version costs $8, Lite version is free.
