Dead Island: Epidemic is a twisted take on the MOBA genre, allowing players to use WASD and a clicky trigger finger to move and shoot. As the narrator puts it: "Unlike other titles in the genre, you'll have direct control over your character – no last-hitting, click-to-move nonsense here." [Image: Deep Silver]

Deep Silver's in-progress MOBA Dead Island: Epidemic is now available via Steam Early Access, giving players an early look at a closed beta version ahead of its public launch. Dead Island: Epidemic is an online cooperative action game in which teams of players employ crafted weapons and character skills to fend off zombie hordes. Early Access players will get exclusive weapons and upgrades not available in the final release, due later this year. While the final version of Epidemic will be free-to-play, access to the closed beta requires purchasing either the Patient Zero Pack ($16.99) or the Deadicated Pack ($39.99). Players can also opt for the Contagion Pack ($44.99), which includes all content from the Patient Zero and Dedicated packs, along with three additional copies of the game to share with friends. Publisher Deep Silver has begun beta testing the free-to-play Dead Island: Epidemic, and it needs your help putting the zombies through their shambling paces. As its name would suggest, Dead Island: Epidemic is a spin-off of Deep Silver's Dead Island franchise. Instead of a first-person action game, Epidemic drops players into a multiplayer online battle arena (think: League of Legends) populated by the same walking corpses that make up the supporting cast of the core Dead Island series. Cooperative teamwork is key to surviving the undying hordes, but when your teammates fail you, you can also rely on over-the-top DIY weaponry, another hallmark of the Dead Island games. Gaining access to the closed beta is as simple as visiting the game's website and filling out a quick registration form. Those who participate in the beta test will be able to earn "exclusive in-game items and rewards" that will carry over into the eventual retail incarnation of Dead Island: Epidemic. Deep Silver's free-to-play Dead Island spin-off, Dead Island: Epidemic, is now accepting applications for its upcoming closed beta. The free-to-play PC game is a multiplayer online battle arena game (MOBA) set in the Dead Island universe. Three teams of players fight against each other amidst mobs of CPU-controlled undead who equally hate all players. That's just how zombies roll, you know? Curious zombie slayers may head on over to the official site and sign up for the Dead Island: Epidemic closed beta today. If you're newly registered, you'll automatically get access to Dead Island: Epidemic's ongoing Alpha test – of which 30,000 players have joined – ahead of the closed beta. All participants will earn in-game goods that carry over into Dead Island: Epidemic proper whenever it launches. [Image: Deep Silver]

What's a ZOMBA? It's not that thing that roams around your floor sucking up dirt but instead an entirely new thing that makes a happy marriage of Dead Island's zombies and MOBAs: a Zombie Online Multiplayer Battle Arena. Trust us, that term will be on everyone's lips come next week. Dead Island: Epidemic is an upcoming free-to-play MOBA set in the same gory world as the PC game. Details about the game are scarce, other than the fact that it'll be for the PC, feature three players, and probably contain a thousand bad "brainssss" references. Developer Deep Silver said that more information about the title will be released at Gamescom in a couple of weeks. [Source: Deep Silver press release]
