  • Swarm Dead Rising producer at signing tomorrow

Despite his name, Keiji Inafune clearly isn't the wary type, opting to appear in public tomorrow and openly inviting gamers to inundate him with requests to sign their copies of Dead Rising. The esteemed developer's latest game, yet another entry into the zombie-ridden shopping mall sim genre, has already generated a great deal of buzz, possibly because it allows you to beat undead cretons to a pulp with baseball bats, benches and finely matured wheels of cheese. If you plan on attending the signing event tomorrow, here's what you need to know: Date: Tuesday, August 8, 2006 Time: 4:00PM - 6:00PM Location: EB Games, Redmond Town Center16495 NE 74th StreetRedmond, Washington 98052 (Tel. 425-895-8331) Demeanor: Approachable, but may unexpectedly and infrequently lunge And don't forget, you'll actually have to purchase a copy of the game in order to have it signed. There will be plenty of free Xbox t-shirts, however, no doubt meant to distract the crowd's inherent urge to tear Mr. Inafune limb from limb and devour his brain.

Thekmillion, a very helpful IGN poster, has done all who downloaded that massive Dead Rising demo a service. He has put together a very well-done walkthrough for those looking to maximize the pleasure out of their 15 minutes of zombie slaying. From the post, you'll learn how to find the katana, submachine gun, and put together certain blender drinks to give you advantages. If you put down the demo and haven't explored half this stuff, it's time to go back in and kick some major undead butt!Check after the break for the full FAQ.

It took me three friggin' days to download the Saints Row demo with two unexplained drops that failed to pick up where they left off. Now after 13 miserable hours, Dead Rising is at a mere 34% complete (How did we live with this before the dashboard update?). Are other people out there experiencing similar looooooong waits for their recent downloads?

Hordes of zombies prevented me from posting this earlier today, but here it is: a Dead Rising demo is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Weighing in at 1014 megs, it's the heaviest demo in recent memory, if not ever. Go get it and enjoy. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go help Ken board up the doors and windows inside Fanboy headquarters. [Thanks to the hordes of not-zombies that sent this in.] Update 1: Fixed my grievous gigabyte error. Geez.

  • Dead Rising demo here, Gears demo not coming

You know what time it is, don't you? It's time to clear out your 360 hard drive, swollen from demo after demo, turgid and bloated. We've got yet another (Friday) demo, this time Capcom's new zombie-killing title, and she's a big girl. Weighing in at 1014MB, the demo might appear large, but with a 15-minute time limit, it's really just supposed to whet your appetite for zombie gore (just a taste, you're not supposed to swallow it). That's the good news. The bad news: all that room we cleared out for yesterday's "BIG" announcement is gonna be used for the Dead Rising demo. Emergence Day was it, folks. There won't be any face-melting Gears of War demo coming out prior to the retail launch Emergence Day, so says Epic's resident party pooper, Mark Rein: "I don't see any way we could do a demo before the game comes out. We've said that before. Demos take a long time to create and polish and we can't afford to get derailled like that if we want to have the game in stores by Thanksgiving."What about that super-polished E3 multiplayer demo everyone keeps gabbing about? We'd settle for that, y'know. [Thanks for all the tips!]Read - Dead Rising demo on XBLMRead - No Gears demo pre-release

Over the past couple of days here in New York City, Microsoft has been in town playing host to a few NYC game journos, giving us the opportunity to test drive all the latest titles you'll be seeing soon and even some peripherals, like the Xbox 360 camera. The games I'll talk about are Gears of War, The World Series of Poker: Tournament of Champions, Dead Rising, Call of Duty 3, NBA 2K7, WWE: Smackdown vs. Raw, and Tony Hawk's Project 8. Check out my impressions after the break.

A spokesperson for Capcom Europe has informed CVG that an announcement on when a demo version of the upcoming 360 zombie slasher Dead Rising will be hitting Xbox Live will come in the next 48 hours. While it has been rumored to be coming shortly to Xbox Live on various gaming sites, this is the first time we have seen this sort of confirmation of when an official announcement will be made. And, man, we hope this demo comes quickly. Ever since E3, we've been salivating at the chance to finally play this at home.

A new Dead Rising trailer on Marketplace reveals the tantalizing information that a demo is "coming soon." Wait a minute, coming soon? The game is coming out in a week! Capcom best get to it if they want people to sample this in a timely manner. Of course, given Capcom's other demo on Marketplace, their track record for timeliness is a pretty good one. Dead Rising will have zombies. Lots of zombies. Way too many zombies for Germany to handle. We all know that, but something we haven't heard much about is the other characters. Just to give you your Dead Rising fix, Xboxygen has posted three character renders for your viewing pleasure. We have sexy lady one, nerd-sexy lady two, and what zombie game would be complete without (sexy) Ving Rhames? Looks nice, no? [Thanks, gaetge]

  • Dead Rising not banned, facing unique 'unrated' status in Germany

    by

Over on his blog, Xbox Live Germany's Boris Schneider-Johne breaks down the peculiar circumstances surrounding Dead Rising's status in Germany. Earlier this week, reports suggested that Germany's software rating organization, USK, had outright banned the title. Schneider-Johne explains that it's more complicated than that.In Germany, a game can't be banned until it's released. And it's not USK that bans the game, it's Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien (a.k.a. Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons) -- or 'BPjM' for short. But BPjM can't ban a game that's rated, so, in order for a game to be banned, USK must decide not to rate it. In other words, only 'unrated' games can be banned. But again, banning can't be applied until a game is released, and BPjM will only consider banning a title after a youth organization has applied for the ban. However, even if a game is banned, retailers can still sell it legally to adults, they just can't advertise the game. The catch is, Microsoft will not permit 'unrated' games to be published because it undermines the Xbox 360's built-in parental control system. So ... Schneider-Johne concludes, "Dead Rising could be legally sold in Germany, but won't be published." Confused yet?

  • Dead still not rising in Deutschland

The dead may be crawling out of their graves, but they can't escape the vagaries of the German software ratings bureaucracy. GameIndustry.biz clarified their earlier report on the status of Dead Rising to explain that, while the game isn't technically banned in land of lederhosen, the lack of a rating effectively prevents it from coming to market. Follow the link if you want the gory details. Leave it to a bunch of brain dead Euro-crats to kill a bunch of already rotting corpses. [Thanks Steve]

Another news bit from the 'stiq, Gaming Bits reports that the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) -- Germany's software ratings board -- will not approve Capcom's undead sandbox title, Dead Rising. If true, this would be the first 360 title to be banned anywhere. So, let's see. Lederhosen? No problem. Industrial death metal? Fine. Zombies? That's crossing the line! [Via Joystiq. Thanks, steve]

Gaming Bits reports that Germany's software rating organization, the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK), would not approve Capcom's upcoming zombie hack-n-slasher Dead Rising. If upheld, this would mark the first instance in which an Xbox 360 game has been banned in any territory/region.As of this post's publishing time, Dead Rising is still listed on the German version of Xbox.com, although the release date (or 'Veröffentlichungsdatum') has been changed to "TBD."

Xboxyde delivers again with another video from the Japan Expo in Paris. This one shows us the first seven minutes of Capcom's Dead Rising. In case your world view is hindered by the rock you live under, Dead Rising is basically Dawn of the Dead the videogame -- and currently a big favorite at Gamefly. You play a photojournalist who winds up inside a shopping mall full of zombies. Lucky for you, the mall is full of all kinds of stuff to kill zombies with: guns, lawn mowers, chainsaws, bowling balls, and even the kitchen sink for all we know. You won't see any of that in this video, though. It's mostly introduction. And like the Sonic videos yesterday, there is no sound and some dude's face keeps popping in and out of the frame. I will say one thing: it's damned pretty (the game, not the face). Enjoy!

  • 360 games top the rental charts

    07.07.2006

Gamasutra has posted the 10 most requested games from Gamefly this week, and the list leans heavily toward our favorite curvy, white box. A full five of the top spots are occupied by 360 exclusives (six if you count the 360 version of BFMEII). Xboxic has gone to the trouble of making a numbered list, which I will politely steal utilize: Chromehounds (360 exclusive) Prey (360/PC) Over G Fighters (360 exclusive) LotR: Battle for Middle Earth 2 (360 version) Dead Rising (360 exclusive) NCAA Football 2007 (multi) Hitman: Blood Money (multi) Naruto: Ultimate Ninja (PS2) Gears of War (360 exclusive) Call of Duty 3 (PC/next-gen) Look at that list for a second. Notice anything? That's right, four 360 exclusives that haven't even been released -- Chromehounds, Prey, Dead Rising, and Gears of War -- are in the top 10. That means these games are more requested than games people could actually be playing right now. Crazy, no?

More hands-on time for Gamespot at last week's Capcom Gamer's Day, this time they try out the recently "delayed" Dead Rising. Considering Joystiq's less than enthusiastic response to the title at CES, that delay seemed well justified. Gamespot reports, "As far as the visuals go, Dead Rising has made some impressive leaps over what we last saw. The graphics have been polished up considerably," continuing, "The unique structure seems like it could be a cool way to progress through a game--or it could be so vague that we end up going insane trying to keep busy." I think most gamers can agree that the idea of zombies in a sandbox game world ranks up there with the greatest ideas mankind is capable of producing, but we remain skeptical. We'll need to hear a lot more praise and less equivocation; however, following Resident Evil 4, we're more than happy to give Capcom the benefit of the doubt.
