If you've seen Looney Tunes or The Simpsons, you've probably heard Raymond Scott's music -- which was adapted for those and other cartoons. But there's a good chance you haven't heard of Scott himself. A musician and inventor, Scott was ahead of his time. As early as the 1950s, he began working on the Electronium, a kind of music synthesizer that he hoped would perform and compose music simultaneously. While Scott invested $1 million and more than a decade in Electronium, he died before it was complete. Now, Fast Company reports, Pentagram partner and sound artist Yuri Suzuki has picked up where Scott left off.

  • Rock Band 3 songs leaked by video

A video coming out of Germany's Gamescom convention yesterday may have accidentally revealed a whole mess of unannounced tracks for upcoming rhythm/music title Rock Band 3. During an interview shot by YouTube user GottGamesShow (since taken down), an RB3 rep could be seen scrolling through the entire setlist for the game, apparently revealing tracks from John Lennon's "Imagine" to Devo's "Whip It." RockBandAide grabbed the whole list before the video went down, which we've dropped for you after the break. And though we've reached out to Harmonix and MTV Games for confirmation, we'd like to point out that, for now, the songs could potentially be future Rock Band Network tracks or simply placeholder. That said, we're hoping they're not -- we're pretty psyched about the two songs we already mentioned, and frankly, it's all about James Brown. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Any White Stripes fan -- nay, any music fan at all -- can only look at this trailer for Disney's Ultimate Band and weep, perhaps while pounding a sharp-edged rock into the side of their skull. It's not the idea of yet another music game that will probably do the same things as all the other music games (including using Rock Band's instruments). It's the absolutely abhorrent quality of the included covers that has us writhing on the floor in pain and shame. That's got us wondering if all the music will be covers, since we know of several other songs and artists on tap for the title (and more who are rumored).Ultimate Band was initially announced as being the peripheral-free answer to Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but now that rumored versions for the Xbox 360 and PS3 have been announced, word is that there will also be a version with instruments that will retail for $170.Drag yourself past the break to see the list known artists and songs.

  • Rock Band to get whippy good Devo DLC

In an interview with G4's X-Play, Mark Mothersbaugh, member of the 80's red hat wearing group Devo, confirmed that Devo will in fact be releasing three tracks to the Rock Band DLC library. Though, Mothersbaugh kept his cards close and didn't reveal which Devo tracks they'll be releasing, when they'll hit the XBLM or for how much. But one thing that's nearly certain is that one of their Rock Band releases will be the uber hit "Whip It". Because if they put out a three pack of DLC and don't include "Whip It", then we and thousands of fanboys will have to perform a Devo Rock Band DLC boycott. And yes, Devo, that is a threat.[Via Joystiq]

  • Devo songs coming to Rock Band (no, we're not sure about 'Whip It')

Keyboard peripheral be damned! Seminal synth pop superstars Devo are coming to Rock Band, frontman Mark Mothersbaugh tells X-Play, and they've even re-recorded one synth-heavy song to do it. "They wanted 'Through Being Cool' for some reason," he says, "Which is kind of odd because it's all synth solos, so we re-recorded ... all my synth solos, synth leads, as guitar leads."Mothersbaugh says there are two other songs coming in addition to "Through Being Cool" leading us to believe we'll see them all collected as a three-song track pack. In accordance with the "Devo Obligatory Whip It Mentioning Law of 1980" we'll note here that one of those songs is statistically likely to, in fact, be "Whip It." Check out the video clip after the break and see if you can't catch Mothersbaugh subconsciously mouthing out the names of other two songs ... or perhaps, unknowingly making furtive whip-cracking gestures.

  • Forum Post of the Day: What type of music do Azerothians make?

Acerba of Cenarion Circle started a pretty fun discussion the other day on her server boards: What type of music would typify various races and cultures of Azeroth? Sure, we all have our soundtracks for when we get tired of the in-game music, and the in-game music itself often has various themes that show again and again music to represent various concepts, but thinking about what music your character would listen to or what sounds you might here around a bonfire at Razor Hill (Well, besides L70ETC) or in a fine mansion in Silvermoon City is a really fun exercise. I'm one who often creates soundtracks for my PnP and MMORPG characters alike in order to understand this, so I find it a useful exercise for us roleplayers, as well.

If you ever wondered whatever became of 80s rock fringers Devo, wonder no more; they were here in San Francisco last night, entertaining the faithful at the Macworld Blast party. Mark Mothersbaugh and crew were dressed in identical black t-shirts, shorts and kneepads as they delivered a sonic assault to a crowd partially adorned with classic Devo red plastic hats. The party, sponsored by Microsoft, also featured packs of Office-branded M&M candies. Chocolate and very loud music, always a delightful combo.
