So Lasdran over on Gorgonnash (known only as "Jim" in real life) got an ultraportable PC (a Sony UX), and he had a pretty good idea about how to use it. He's playing WoW (that's usually a terrific idea, no matter what), only he's playing it as he wanders around the real world. And to document his travels (both in Azeroth and in real life), he's taking snapshots every time he levels.Note that I said snapshots, not screenshots-- he's actually holding up the camera and shooting the UMPC in his current environment every time he dings. He hit level 3 in line at the mall. And when he hit level 5, he happened to be in the waiting room of a hospital. There are still a few kinks in the system (it looks like he could use a better camera, and he's already missed a few shots-- level 7 happened while he was in the bathroom-- but if he keeps it up, it could turn into an interesting photoblog about how his character's life happened to interact with his own.Not to mention that playing WoW anytime, anywhere, is a pretty interesting prospect, too. I'm heading home for the holidays, as I'm sure a lot of you are, which means I'll be away from the game for a little while, and this would definitely be a welcome addition to a long cartrip. In the meantime, keep up the photos, Jim-- if I were you, I'd make a quick blog and start posting photos pronto. Good stuff.

  • How to Hit 60 In Style (Or Not)

Yesterday, my Orc Shaman finally hit "the most fun part of the game," according to one of my guildies-- yep, after long last, he dinged 60.Originally, I had hoped to do something really interesting with it-- hit 60 by discovering Stormwind, or finally downing Hakkar for the first time. But in the end, I happened to be in the middle of a Scholo run, and it rolled right up on me. Not that it wasn't exciting-- later that night I used all my new stats on a raid and picked up a great mace, and I couldn't wait to get into AV afterwards and finally put the beat down for real. And my experience wasn't as bad as Belle's over in the WoW Ladies livejournal group-- she hit 60 while AFK and offline.Fortunately, I have another character three levels from 60, so I'm just a week or so away from another chance to make the ding special (I think for this one I'm going to at least try to get my guild to take me to Onyxia for the occasion). Did you try to hit your 60 somewhere specific, or did you just play through until that yellow sparkle showed up for the last time? Or if you haven't reached the holy grail yet, got any plans?

Some dings mean more than others. Across all my alts, I've heard the noise and seen the yellow flashes over two hundred times -- yet few of them are memorable. I find odd-numbered levels particularly boring, as nothing really happens (some armour and quests become available, but even numbers are where it's at). However, some dings are memorable enough to make up for the monotone of the majority. Hitting 60 (see right) isn't an experience most of us forget; my first "big ding" was at 40, after beating up some STV gorillas for those last few XP. What's your best ding memory?
