Starting tonight, and running every Wednesday through December 19th, you need to make sure your TiVo is pointed to the Discovery Channel at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. For gamers of any stripe, they're covering a gaming retrospective that will be as sweet as popping a Power-up right before stomping King Koopa, and as comforting as the first level of Pong. For those of us with an interest in MMOs, however, we have one episode -- Level Five, premiering on December 19th -- dedicated to our obsession. The final episode of Rise of the Video Game covers the first MUDs from the late 1960s through the latest MMOs today. They'll be discussing everything from Ultima Online through World of Warcraft, and they'll include interviews with both Richard Bartle of MUD fame and Cory Ondrejka from Linden Lab. So make sure you have your popcorn ready and your recorders running: we've got us some game history to uncover.[Via GamePolitics]

Just yesterday we noticed that Verizon had quietly slipped Discovery Channel HD onto its FiOS TV lineup in at least three major markets, and today the firm has fessed up and proven that we're not just losing our minds. "Starting" today, VZW has added Discovery HD to FiOS TV "in all markets" on channel 846, and just in case that wasn't riveting enough, it also reaffirmed its plan to deliver HD simulcasts of Discovery Communications' other popular networks -- TLC, Animal Planet and The Science Channel -- sometime in 2008. The more the merrier, we say.

Are you getting tired of the Halo 3 marketing machine yet? Well, if you are, then too bad because tonight on the Discover Channel's Future Weapons series they're airing a very special Halo 3 episode. Although, we aren't sure what role Halo 3 will be playing in the episode seeing that the commercial (embedded above) doesn't tell us much. But we do know that the Future Weapons series picks apart, compares and analyzes military machines and weapons. So, using that knowledge, we totally hope that they take a look at Halo 3's weapons, analyze 'em as if they were real, and show some geeky specs instead of some corny sponsorship thing. Anyhoo, the Halo 3 Future Weapons episode airs tonight at 8:00PM eastern, so plan accordingly.Oh, and we also received a tip about another Halo 3 television appearance on the SciFi channel where on the 25th they'll be airing a 30 minute special entitled "Halo 3: Sci vs Fi". We aren't sure what it's about either, but we may have to set our DVR, because we don't think we'll be able to pull ourselves away from our Halo 3 on that day. Enjoy![Thanks, Token White Guy]

  • Free Shark Week & Unlock Xbox downloads

We advise US Xbox Live members to swim on over to the XBLM to download a few newly free themes and gamer pictures. Discovery Channel is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Shark Week by giving away a (somewhat bland) shark theme and a set of shark gamer pictures. And what more can we say, they're sharky? But if you hate sharks or just like Doritos, then you'll be pleased to know that there is also a free Unlock Xbox inspired theme and gamer picture set available too.And allow us to vent a little here and point out that the Unlock Xbox theme bothers the heck out of us. Why? Because the background colors don't match the freakin' blade colors! It looks like the designers tried to match the colors, but got sort of confused by the time they painted the media blade. Hey theme makers, is it that hard to match a few colors? End rant.Read - Free Shark Week downloadsRead - Free Unlock Xbox downloads

Two million points is quite a haul, and would just about allow you to pay for the horse armor in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. We keed, we keed! Seriously though, that's a lotta points just waiting to find their way home underneath your gamertag. In conjunction with the new content they are sponsoring for Gears of War, the Discovery Channel is giving away the points through www.readyaimfire.com www.readyaimfuture.com/, and the site will only be up on January 13th and 14th, so you'd better be quick on your browser and sign in to find out how to qualify for the points. You can head here and read all about the contest. While the Discovery Channel isn't the first company to give away points on Xbox Live, they are the first network/cable channel to do so. It's probably no coincidence that they're airing their Gamer Generation series while this contest is going on. Gamers, you all are a demographic that everyone wants a slice of, so brace yourselves.[Thanks to Concaf for the proper url]

Today, the Discovery Channel has added a slew of shows to the iTunes Music Store, including the great Mythbusters [iTunes link], plus shows from Discovery Health [iTunes link], Discovery Kids [iTunes link] and The Travel Channel [iTunes link]. I'm glad about it, as most of the shows I watch are on cable.
