If it wasn't yet clear to you that the age of the DIY mashup is upon us, a new set of toys from a company called BlueBox -- which let even iPod-toting tweens "enhance" their tunes by dropping beats and sound effects -- should remove any lingering doubts. The three members of the new miJam series, which all attach to standard headpone jacks - a guitar, mixing board, and electronic drumsticks -- bear little resemblance to  their non-toy counterparts, as all of the effects are triggered by buttons instead of real drumming or thrashing. Even the mixer sounds like it would be a letdown for budding DJ's, delivering canned scratches that will in no way prepare them for the beat-matching they'll being doing in a few years on their Numarks. Still, kids are pretty easily entertained, so the flashing lights and loud noises should probably hold their interest for a few minutes longer than your average gimmicky accessory. Like so many other pre-release products we bring you, we have no idea when these are coming out nor how much they'll sell for.

Talk about a convergence device-- not only does NTI Comodo's new NP-950 digital audio player perform the obligatory playback and recording functions, it can even act as a VoIP "handset" or broadcast tunes DJ-style over the Internet when docked in its USB cradle. Being marketed as the "Universal MP3 Player" in conjunction with OpenCast, this model is available in 512MB or 1GB flavors and supports MP3, WMA, ASF, and WAV audio tracks, WMV and AMV video files or JPEG/BMP/GIF photos on its 1.5-inch LCD, as well as English, Korean, Japanese, or Chinese eBooks. We're not really sure exactly who's being targeted with this unit -- whose price and release date are unknown -- since you can't store all that much content on it, and the chat/broadcast features seem more gimmicky than useful.

Many DJ's have added iPods to their setups, and some cool equipment has been made available for them. Now, here's a piece of software for you all to use: iScratch.iScratch lets you scratch and reverse audio tracks on your iPod, using the scroll wheel as you would a turn table. Note that iScratch requires you to install Linux on your iPod, so you have been warned. So, with that in mind, get to it. iScratch is free and open source.

Back in April, C.K. reported on a prototype of this device, but the sketchy details available at the time didn't indicate whether or not it would ever see the light of day. The good news is, today is that day.The iDJ allows your iPod to become a legitimate source playback device. It's a 2-channel mixer that features two iPod docking stations (that fit all model iPods!), a 3 band EQ with gain on both channels, a dedicated mic, phono/line inputs, a turntable spindle receptacle for connecting your vinyl and more. It's finished in polished white to compliment your iPod(s), charges docked iPods and allows for transfer of music to an iPod via a USB connection. You can find a list of your local resellers here. While specific pricing/shipping information is not available on the Numark website, I called a music store in my area, and was told that they expect to have them in stock by the end of the month, and priced in the "$250-ish" range. Update: It looks like the iDJ will be available in October, and retail for $400US.
