Dragon Quest Monsters confirmed for 3DS release
A remake of 1998's Game Boy Color title Dragon Quest Monsters is officially heading to the 3DS, Square Enix has confirmed. The 3DS version will include all of the beasts from Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, as well as some new monsters and stories. Dragon Quest Monsters is expected to hit the 3DS in Japan in 2012.
The Daily Grind: Once you play MMORPGs, can you ever go back to single-player RPGs?
Before MMOs came around, I used to be a pretty active single-player RPG gamer. My platform of choice was the console but I eventually got into a few PC titles as well. One of the first games I got into on the Nintendo Entertainment System was Dragon Warrior in 1989 (for reference, I was 9 years old). That eventually led to Final Fantasy, Crystalis, and a few others throughout the early 90s. I eventually upgraded to a Sony Playstation and gorged on a smattering of RPGs, chief among them Final Fantasy VII. Life was great (if somewhat geeky) and I didn't see any signs of my tastes changing any time soon.Then my friend introduced me to a PK MUD in 1996 and my tastes did change. Obviously, I was a huge fan of RPGs at this stage in my life but this was my very first taste of a multi-player RPG. I was hooked. RPG lovers are big fans of stats, strategy, and story. Online RPGs give you all that and an additional sense of community, collaboration, and competition.Whenever I try going through solo RPGs or even solo action games like God of War or Resident Evil (series) these days, I just feel like there's something missing and can barely stomach playing. For some reason, I feel like I'm wasting time, which is strange because I realize gaming is just as viable a hobby as anything else. Perhaps MMOs give me the sense that many people are wasting time so perhaps it isn't so bad? It's hard to put a finger on it.So, I'm curious; once you've played (and enjoyed) MMORPGs, can you ever go back to (and enjoy) single-player RPGs? I know I can't anymore due in large part to the three missing C's.
Promotional Consideration: Dragon Quest IV commercials were weird
With the Dragon Quest IV DS remake announced for the US and Europe this week, we thought it'd be good a time to dig up Enix's commercials for the original Famicom game's release in Japan. They're completely different from the retro ads used last November when the DS remake shipped.As with Squaresoft's chocobo commercials for Final Fantasy IV on the Super Famicom (launching a little over a year after Dragon Quest IV), these ads were just plain odd! They show hardly any in-game video, relying on logos and recognizable theme music instead. Gather your party and meet us in the fifth chapter, past the post break, for the commercials.
1UP's Retronauts go to Japan for NES classics and profit
We used to import games from Japan through shady specialty shops and mailing lists; creepy retail ads from the backs of magazines pleading for your American dollars. With the rise of the internet, it became a more legitimate form of shopping. And now that we're all old and bitter we just skip all that rubbish and go directly to Japan for our ancient video games.Or at least that's what 1UP's Jeremy Parrish and Game|Life's Chris Kohler do. For a rare glimpse of a weeaboo in its natural environment, 1UP's on-going video series of Retronauts takes us to Tokyo's Akihabara district for some vintage video game shopping. The duo try to land some choice picks to feed to the eBay masses while musing over just why a copy of the original Super Mario Bros costs so much over there. Special guest appearances by Hot Slots and the Dragon Warrior III original soundtrack ... on vinyl.
