  • The next Moto X may pack a smarter, metal-clad design

Way back in December, rumors suggested that Lenovo's next big Motorola phone would go in a very different direction than ages past, including a metal chassis and a curious camera bump. Well, those rumors just got some validation. HellomotoHK has posted images of what appears to be both the next Moto X and its Droid-branded Verizon equivalent. Sure enough, they hint at a flatter, metallic body with a more elaborate camera array -- are those dots on the side a clue to laser autofocusing? There's also a fingerprint reader on the front, which puts the kibosh on the Pure Edition's front-facing stereo sound... sorry, folks.

  • Droid Turbo 2 review: What it lacks in style, it makes up for in power

Verizon's line of Droid phones just celebrated its sixth birthday, and what better way to celebrate than by releasing the best device to ever bear the Droid title? I jokingly called Motorola's Droid Turbo 2 "a Moto X Pure on steroids," but there's no denying it packs even more power than its predecessor into a body that's built to take a beating. Throw in a battery rated for 48 hours and we should be left with a phone that will make Moto X owners rue the day they whipped out their credit cards, right? Turns out, the answer's a little more complicated.

Motorola's new Droid Turbo is here, and its arrival might be a tough pill to swallow for Verizon customers who just shelled out cash for a new Moto X. After a bit of hands-on time, though, it's clear that the Droid Turbo 2 has plenty of compromises of its own.

It's a little hard to believe Verizon's Droid line is six years old, and the family just keeps growing. Today, the carrier and its hardware partner Motorola pulled back the curtain on the Droid Turbo 2, a new flagship that doesn't exactly come as a surprise. If you liked the Moto X Style/Pure, you just might be a little jealous of all the extra stuff its Verizon-only cousin just got.

October 27th can't come soon enough for fans of the Droid series. Although Verizon is expected to reveal its latest flagship smartphone on that day, the carrier seems to be extremely eager to show you what it has planned for the event. In a tweet earlier today, Verizon teased a handset fitting the leaked description of the "shatterproof" Droid Turbo 2, calling it "the perfect phone for imperfect people." Aside from a tough screen, the device is said to be compatible with Motorola's Moto Maker service, which will let you customize it to your liking. We'll learn all the official details soon enough, but in the meantime, here's a quick video of the new Turbo to hold you over.

Those rumors of Verizon launching the Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2 at its October 27th event? They just got much more concrete. Droid-Life has obtained leaked promos spilling the beans on both of the carrier-specific Motorola smartphones. As suspected, the Droid Turbo 2 should be advertised as having a "shatterproof" screen -- we're a bit skeptical of that claim, but Big Red will apparently back that up by accepting trade-ins of phones with cracked screens. Even if the display doesn't live up to that billing, though, the new Turbo will reportedly offer Moto Maker customization. Finally, you won't be stuck picking from a handful of black-and-red models while your Moto X-toting friends show off their more colorful devices.

Chalk up one more big Android phone maker racing to patch its devices against that nasty Stagefright video security flaw. Motorola has explained that it will not only fix the vulnerability in phones from 2013 onward (such as the original Moto X and the Droid line), but make sure that its latest hardware is secure almost from the word go. Both the Moto X Style and Moto X Play will be secure on launch, while the recently-shipped third-generation Moto G is getting its update "soon."

It's been quite a year in products here at the Engadget offices. Not only have we looked at the latest flagship phones and hottest laptops, but our reviews have run the gamut from VR headsets to WiFi Crock-Pots. We've worn lots of smartwatches and fitness wristbands on our arms, tried out an ultra-secure phone and looked at more Chromebooks than we can count. And while we reviewed plenty of average and mediocre devices (and even a few bad ones), there are a handful that emerge at the top of the heap. Some come out as clear winners, while others are good, but don't quite break away from the pack, leaving us with a rather perplexing six-way-tie for seventh place. Thus, we present to you not our top 10, but top 12 highest-scored products of 2014.

Once upon a time, not all that long ago, Motorola released an excellent flagship phone called the Moto X. Sure, it didn't have the best battery ever and the camera was pretty lousy, but it just oozed charm and didn't leave me wanting for much. Then, just months later, Motorola (with a perhaps little coaxing from Verizon) released a phone that addressed just about all of the X's shortcomings. That, in a nutshell, is the story of the Droid Turbo: Just think of it as the Moto X Plus. But is it really that much better than that other phone we fell for? And will Verizon Moto X owners rue the day they extended their contracts?

Verizon's Droid Turbo is a curious little beast: It's a distinct improvement over Motorola's one-time flagship Moto X, but it lacks the sort of geek credentials that have gotten people drooling over the newly announced Nexus 6. That said, we were a little taken with just how seriously Motorola still takes its long-running Droid line, so join us as we take a quick look what's worth knowing about the Turbo.

What's black and Kevlar and screams "turbo"? Okay, yes, a modded BMW M3. But also Verizon's latest smartphone, the Droid Turbo by Motorola. Regular Engadget readers assuredly know a lot about this phone already: it's got a 5.2-inch Quad HD AMOLED display covered in Corning's Gorilla Glass 3, a Kevlar back, and an incredibly long battery life. Verizon's touting "up to" 48 hours of power and a quick charge feature that nets "up to 8 hours of use" from a 15-minute charge (using a specific charging cable included with the phone, naturally). The Droid Turbo's not all charge and no oomph: a Snapdragon 805 processor is the heart of the Turbo (a 2.7GHz quad-core CPU) and an Adreno 420 CPU (running at 600MHz) handles graphics on that fancy Quad HD screen. 3GB of RAM handles memory, making all that processor power worth a damn. Should processor speeds not excite you, perhaps megapixel counts will? The camera out back on the Droid Turbo is a whopping 21-megapixels. And yes, relax, your selfies are safe: there's a front-facing camera with 2MP resolution and 1080p video capability.

So far, the pictures we've seen of Motorola's soon-to-launch Droid Turbo have been... incomplete. You won't have to wonder exactly what this Verizon-only smartphone looks like any longer, though. Evan Blass (@evleaks) has posted a press image (available through Verizon's web code) which provides a good look at the phone, including its frequently elusive front. In short, this is a hybrid between last year's Kevlar-laden Droid Maxx and the styling cues of 2014 Motorola flagships like the new Moto X and Nexus 6. The biggest upgrades over the Maxx are likely to be in the guts, such as the 21-megapixel camera, the rumored Quad HD screen and a speedy Snapdragon 805 chip. Whether or not the Turbo is as tough as it looks, you'll know the full story when the phone launches in nine days.

  • Verizon's announcing its new Droid on October 28th

It's been leaked to hell and back lately, but no matter - Verizon's finally ready to pull back the curtain on its latest Droid smartphone at an event in New York on October 28. That device is the Droid Turbo, a seemingly super-charged version of this year's Moto X that reportedly wraps an even speedier Snapdragon 805 chipset into a more traditional (some would say more heinous looking) Droid body. No need to lament its looks too much, though: while it keeps the same 5.2-inch screen as the X, Motorola stuck a 21-megapixel rear camera into the Turbo's slimmish chassis, and rumor has it that there's a staggeringly capacious 3,900mAh battery lurking in there to boot. If you've thumbed through our Moto X review, you'll know that those two issues were the only things keeping Moto's newest flagship from smartphone greatness, so forgive us for getting just a little excited to see the Turbo in person. After all, latest year's Droid lineup were just slight variations on the original Moto X theme -- this time Motorola seems to have dramatically upgraded the X formula.

We caught a brief glimpse of the Droid Turbo late last month, but really: that handful of leaked images didn't do much to whet our whistles. This time though, something a little more substantive has started making the rounds -- the folks over at MotoFirmware obtained the phone's full Verizon user guide (PDF warning) and have posted it for all to enjoy. The 73-page document confirms among other things that the Droid Turbo packs a 5.2-inch display (though we can't tell if it's a Quad HD beast like some rumors have suggested), a 21-megapixel rear camera that shoots 4K video, and the same sort of context-sensitive tricks that the Moto X can pull off. Oh, and that little tease we saw on the official Droid Landing Twitter account? Its not-so-cryptic hints about faster charging have been confirmed too, as the Turbo will come with (what else?) Motorola's forthcoming Turbo Charger in the box. Not a bad deal, consider everyone else will have to shell out $35 for one.

Don't fret, Verizon fans: Motorola's long-running line of Droid devices hasn't petered out just yet. It's hard to miss the swirling rumors of an impending Big Red Moto X launch, but a new image obtained by HelloMotoHK lends a little credence to rumors of another Moto handset barreling down the ol' product pipeline. It's (supposedly) the Droid Turbo, yet another Verizon exclusive... and one that might have an awfully beefy slew of components lodged inside the curvaceous, textured shell you see above. Yes, fine, a spy shot of a phone's back might not get you riled up, but some reports suggest it'll pair a Quad HD display with a 2.65GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset and a 20-megapixel camera. HelloMoto's report doesn't do much to bear out all that speculation, though it does mention that the screen'll be 5.2-inches diagonal and that the Turbo will have a front-facing speaker. For what it's worth, Verizon has been getting in on the teasing lately, too: The official DroidLanding Twitter account cryptically noted that faster battery charging is a "bigger deal" a few weeks back, so we just may be on the cusp of another big announcement.
