Remember that special edition One X for AT&T with the Cushnie et Ochs-approved exterior, and how HTC said it would never go on sale? Well, while HTC is sticking to its word, one of the 150 souls who grabbed one at MADE Fashion Week has decided to give the rest of us a crack at buying it via eBay auction. For folks interested in owning the half ebony, half ivory handset, the bidding currently starts at $360 -- though you can expect the phone to fetch a far greater price when the auction ends six days from now on September 17th. Update: Looks like you've missed your chance, as the eBay auction has now been ended. We're not sure whether the seller got an offer they couldn't refuse, or a strongly worded letter from HTC. Legend of Zelda prototype cartridge goes to auction: $150,000 proves your loyalty to Hyrule (video)
And you thought that Nintendo World Championships gold cartridge would make a nice start to the retirement fund. An eBay auction from tjcurtin1 is offering a prototype NES cartridge for the US release of The Legend of Zelda at a Buy It Now price of $150,000, or roughly ten times more than the typical final bid that Price Charting quotes for a typical NWC cart. While it looks like an unassuming yellow chunk of plastic, it's actually a Nintendo of America copy from February 23, 1987 -- half a year before the definitive action adventure reached the US market. The game still plays and can even save its game on the still functional, industry-first battery backup. Just remember that it's not necessarily going to reveal any design secrets from Shigeru Miyamoto or Takashi Tezuka: the seller warns that he can't see any practical differences between the early copy and the (also included) shipping version. Anyone well-heeled enough to buy the prototype is therefore going solely for the collector's value. But for those determined to be the coolest kid on any block about 25 years late, there's only one way to go.
OG iPad prototype with dual dock connectors hits eBay, teases us with convenience we never had
We're very used to Apple prototypes showing up on eBay. It's not often that we see unreleased iPads get the auction treatment, however, which makes a new listing that much more interesting. A 16GB WiFi version of the original iPad has popped up sporting a second dock connector on its side, a feature that we'd previously only spotted in Apple design patents. The advantage, of course, would be to keep the iPad powered and synced while it's playing a favorite movie in landscape mode. While we don't know how one aaps69 managed to get hands on the tablet, there's some clear signs that the seller didn't just carve an extra hole in the aluminum for kicks: the slate is running the familiar SwitchBoard tool that Apple uses for in-house diagnostics, and there's a raft of old and incomplete part details that suggest this particular iPad was never meant for store shelves. We'll likely never know why Apple left us in a land of solo dock connectors, but we'd take a peek at the source link before it's gone, as more recent Apple prototypes at auction tend to return to the source quickly.
Rare Commodore KIM-1 hits eBay, shows you the PET's barebones roots
Most of us think of Commodore's pre-C64 computing history in terms of the still-legendary PET-2001, but an eBay auction run by Lawrence Bezuska shows just how far back the tradition really goes. He's selling a KIM-1, the stripped-down hobbyist computer from Chuck Peddle that was the foundation for what the PET became. It's so old that it was originally made by MOS Technologies in 1976 -- Commodore bought the company and kept making the KIM-1 until 1981. Inside, you're still looking at a 6502 chip, although you get just 1.12Kb of RAM and lose more than a few things that even DIY enthusiasts take for granted today, such as a power supply. There's no way you'll play Doom on it, then, but the winning bidder does get the luxury of a keypad just inches away from bare circuitry. eBay seller offers Nokia Aeon, is a flat out liar
Seem to good to be true? Yesiree, we're betting it is, too. Nokia's Aeon is a concept, not "Not even released for sale in U.S. yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!." If we weren't clear, he / she is trying to steal your money, so please don't bid. Of course, some may ask about the rather unconvincing renders that are being used to prop up this bridge of deceit, and one needs only check the dodgy shadowing and reflection to see that these just can't be real -- and are the same pics offered by Nokia. So in short, give mercerwholesaleelectroncs8888's -- with 4 feedback -- auction a peek, have a laugh, and hope that one day we'll actually be able to pick one of these up -- for less than $999.
Autographed Halo 3 360 goes for 24 large
The bid for the custom autographed Halo 3 Xbox 360 is now over. The lucky auctioneer, Bidder 27 walks away with the console for a whopping AU $24,300.00 or a cool $20,174.52 USD. That's pretty generous, and hopefully Xbox Australia's Konsoles for Kids puts the money to good use with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We're very happy that the auction was a success. That all being said, we hope the winning bidder gets the Legendary Edition, as it would be kinda silly if he didn't.[Via Digg]
Halo 4: Typo, Halo Wars, or real deal? [Update 1]
Update: The auction has been listed at a new location, and no longer extends past Halo 3. Frankie has confirmed that the whole "Halo 4" thing was a sad excuse for a joke.We told you that there is an auction on eBay for a cameo in Halo 3 as a voice over and it comes in at a pricey $1,000 USD as the opening bid. While that's cool and all, the thing that has been grabbing all the attention is that if the winner doesn't do the recording by May 15th, 2007, "this package will have to [be] redeemed for Halo 4." This caused a stir and made people wonder if it was confirmation of a continuation of the story that was slated to conclude in Halo 3, or if they meant Halo Wars, or if it was a ploy to generate hits for the auction. Our friends over at the 'stiq confirmed that the wording came straight from Bungie, but it didn't clear up their intent. Now, though, if you look at the auction page, there is a rewritten description beneath the original. It states that "if you miss this deadline, this opportunity becomes applicable to a future Bungie project." So, that makes a lot more sense, and hopefully someone (with deep pockets) will start bidding on this item, since it's for charity and all. [Via Joystiq. Thanks dpcough]
