  • The Daily Grind: What was the best random drop you ever got?

The Skinner Box design to MMOs and the random nature of loot tables means that an absolutely epic piece of gear could conceivably drop with the next kill. Or the kill after that! Or after that! Or... yeah, you know the drill. The unpredictability of corpse looting is like a little slot machine built into our games, mostly giving us trash while once in a while paying off in incredible dividends. It's the latter that I'd like us to discuss today. Every once in a while I do a double-take when I see that I just looted an ultra-rare item. I didn't even know text that color existed in the chat window, to be honest! And getting that incredible drop can make my evening (not to mention give me bragging rights to my guild). So what was the best random drop you ever got in an MMO -- and what did you do when it happened? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Welcome back to The Queue, our daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mathew McCurley will be your host today. Welp. Pack your bags, ladies and gentlemen, I was right. Straight from the woman herself. Victory dance. Cetha asked: Has there been any mention on the size of the download if you get the digital copy of Cata? I'm trying to figure out if it would just be easier to get the discs and install it than to try and download another 16GB of info again, which didn't go so well the last time.

  • Hotfix quashes ludicrous purple loot drops in Age of Conan

Something strange has happened over the last few days in Hyboria. The first we knew of it was when a forum post suggested Funcom take a look at their loot tables, because certain mobs were dropping a heck of a lot more purple loot than they were (presumably) supposed to. The poster backed this up by providing a screenful of blue and purple items garnered in a very short space of time.Word got out, as it inevitably does. It seems the Beguiler Demons in Poitain were bugged: their loot table was so skewed that soon any level 75+ character that wanted to could go and stock up on epic drop after epic drop. They're not the best gear in the game by far, but it was pretty clear that a purple item is supposed to be a lot rarer than this. Personal inventories and traders alike were soon overflowing. Having fun in Conan's homeland? Make sure to check out all of our previous Age of Conan coverage, and stick with Massively for more news from the Hyborian Age!

  • The Daily Grind: What's your favorite loot system?

Loot. As a raider, it is both boon and bane to us. If you're in a guild that has a system you can agree with, then loot can be a wonderful thing. However, if not, loot can often destroy morale and even take entire raiding guilds under. We've all heard stories of the inevitable blow-up that occurs after the piece someone's been after forever goes to someone who just joined the guild. That said, as we know we have lots and lots of people with quite a bit of MMOG experience out there, we thought we'd ask you what loot systems you prefer for raiding? Do you still think the oldest is best, and like to run with DKP (Dragon Kill Points), or are you all about the roll and distribute. Perhaps you prefer one of the other systems like Suicide Kings, which goes down a list that moves based on who attends and doesn't loot (thus heading for the top) versus those who attend and loot (who land at the bottom). We're curious what you think is best for keeping raid looting "fair."
