The ESPN application on Xbox Live offered some interesting functionality to sports fans, though perhaps not enough to make it a viable competitor for their standard cable fare. ESPN 2.0, a massive renovation of the platform scheduled to launch August 25 (just in time for college football), will be a much more worthy contender. Gizmodo recently previewed the updated software, revealing a number of its new, tantalizing features, such as the ability to watch two games on ESPN 3 at once, and a live score feed on the side of the UI. The highlight feature is the new Guide, a carousel of thumbnails showing currently streaming programs, each of which include stats, scores and information about each game. Check out a video demonstration of the software on Gizmodo, and join us in wishing for a future where every sport is simulcast conveniently on our gaming consoles. It's always seemed weird to us that given its advanced fiber technology Verizon's FiOS TV service opted to deliver its channels the same way as traditional cable companies, but starting today users can taste the future since it's added access to ESPN Networks online, following Time Warner and Brighthouse. That means you can stream the live ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN Buzzer Beater (and ESPN Goal Line when football season begins again) channels over any broadband connection after heading over to FiOSTVCentral or ESPNnetworks.com to get started. Support for other authenticated devices, like tablets and phones is still in the works per its deal with Disney but for now viewing is strictly a computer-only thing.

We were just wondering what sports weren't already in high definition and now we have an answer, since ESPN has announced it has added major women's pro bowling events to its HD schedule. The US Bowling Congress Queens and U.S. Women's Open will air in April and July on ESPN2 HD for the first time. We're pretty sure that completes the list, with women's bowling and some little series called F1 on board, there can't be anything else left...can there?

For folks across the pond, catching all 31 UEFA Euro 2008 matches in high-def shouldn't be an issue, and thanks to ESPN / ABC, doing so here in the US won't be either -- well, almost. The network(s) have just released their broadcast schedules for Euro 2008, which is schedule to start on June 7th (ESPN Classic) and conclude on June 29th (ABC HD). Out of the 31 total tilts, 26 of 'em will be readily available on either ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD or ABC HD, and all but the two ABC matchups will also be available via ESPN360. Who says there's no good football in June?[Via EPL Talk]

We're not exactly sure how adding a 45th HD channel to the lineup will affect Cablevision's 44 Days in HD promotion, but we're pretty certain the subscribers who have been waiting ages for ESPN2 to finally go HD on their provider won't care. Yes, the poor, tortured Cablevision customers can finally look forward to catching the Deuce in high-definition, as today marks the first time it'll be broadcast as such to iO TV users. You've waited long enough, so without further ado, head on over to channel 735 (and feel free to be extra celebratory this weekend).
