We've been telling everyone that Evasive Space is kind of like a shmup, without all of the sh-ing. Turns out, that's wrong. Evasive Space is like combining Operation and Asteroids. If you've had enough of text today, then feel free to watch our video review. It's injected with 100% videological goodness, courtesy of Joystiq (patent pending).%Gallery-37316%

Today, we've got two new games. On the WiiWare side, there's Evasive Space, which is a shmup without all of the shooting. Then, on the Virtual Console, we've got ... a shmup. Man, they sure love flooding the Wii with shmups. If you want to try Evasive Space for free, remember we're giving it away for a few more hours. WiiWareEvasive Space (Yukes Company of America, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Players take on the role of Konki the Stellar Guardian, who is charged with recovering stolen Constellation Stones that make up the heavens. Dr. Dark Matter and his space thieves have nabbed them, and players must navigate 20 dangerous time- and collection-based missions to get them back. Check out some screens in our gallery below.Virtual ConsoleLife Force (NES, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): An arcade shmup ported to the NES in 1988, players must navigate the inside of a giant alien that is infected by a strain of bacteria, shooting down enemies and grabbing power-ups when they can. There's also a weird sort of riddle that Nintendo included in the press release this week. Find it after the break. Gallery: Evasive Space

Click image for more colorful screens It didn't make it to us in January as hoped, but a press release just hit our inbox, asking us to pass along the information that Evasive Space, the game that Yuke's and High Voltage have been collaborating on, is going to be available to download on February 16 for 1,000 Wii Points. A bit pricey? Sure, but for such an interesting and unique game (it's a shmup without all of the, uh, shmupping), we're willing to shell out and give it a try. What say you all?%Gallery-37316%

Look! More screens of Evasive Space, this time covering Acts 3 (blue, icy) and 4 (full of murky greens and browns)! There's a new trailer as well, which is a little more varied than the last one. Pew pew! Or ... not, as the case may be.Incidentally, we noticed some of you weren't overly keen on the idea of a shmup in which you don't fire a single bullet, but we're totally ready for a whole game based on the same premise as Geometry Wars' superb "Pacifism" achievement. We'll find out if this works soon enough: Yuke's and High Voltage just confirmed a January release on WiiWare.%Gallery-37316%[Via press release]

Hey, look, it's a pointer-controlled shooter on WiiWare! That's ... great. Actually, Yuke's/High Voltage's Evasive Space appears to have a somewhat novel control scheme, in which the pointer actually controls the direction of your flight and not just the direction of your shots. Oh, and also there aren't any shots. So really it's not much of a shooter. Instead, it's a collection of various timed (or time trial) challenges ranging from rescuing floating spacemen to navigating mazes to searching for items. All with nary a pew, pew or pew to be found! If this sounds intriguing to you, have a look at IGN's pile of videos (accessible in the sidebar of the embedded video or here) and check out their written impressions as well. It's apparently due out sometime in December or January for 1,000 Wii Points.%Gallery-37316%

  • Evasive Space screens fail at evading our attention

The first shots of Evasive Space invaded our inbox earlier today, and apparently things get quite ... trippy in the Yuke's/High Voltage collaboration. Not Jeff Minter levels of trippy, but still pretty out there in parts. The game itself, which will cost 1000 Wii Points, seems to be a mix of open play shmupping (as seen in Geometry Wars) and more linear, contained areas. The screens in our gallery are drawn from the first two of the game's four acts, each of which will contain five scenarios to play through. In turn, these come in two types: either you'll be doing timed runs, or you'll be collecting stuff (spacemen, energy cells) while avoiding other stuff (asteroids, gas clouds). It's brave of Yuke's and High Voltage to release a shmup on a system overflowing with the things, but we like what we see so far! Hit up the gallery and tell us what you think.%Gallery-37316%[Via press release]

  • High Voltage, Yuke's collaborating on Evasive Space

High Voltage and Yuke's are combining their considerable powers to bring us Evasive Space, a brand new WiiWare title, in January. Appropriately, screens or footage of the game have evaded us so far, aside from a slightly natty logo. Yes, we know you like posts to have pretty pictures, because we like those too, but that's the cruel, harsh reality of life for you.We have some details, though, even if they are merely word-based. Evasive Space will be a "top-down shooter," one with twenty missions and a pilot called Konki, whose ship players will control with the infrared pointer capabilities of the Wiimote. There'll also be local multiplayer for you and three friends, and online leaderboards. High Voltage is growing rather fond of WiiWare, while Yuke's is becoming fond of making not-wrestling games, two developments we welcome.[Via press release]
