World of Warcraft at Gen Con 2009
I spent Saturday at Gen Con 2009, and while I didn't play any World of Warcraft, the game was still out in droves. Biggest of all of the events and displays about WoW was Upper Deck's massive TCG/minis area -- the place was crowded with players throwing down in both the card and figurine games. Back on the exhibition floor, Upper Deck was also demoing both games, as well as running their usual Darkmoon Faire promotion. And they weren't the only company showing off World of Warcraft-licensed products -- Fantasy Flight games was showing off both World of Warcraft: The Board Game, and World of Warcraft: The Adventure Game at their booth and back in their gaming room. Gen Con is a gigantic convention, so as big as World of Warcraft is, it was only a drop in the flood of gaming going on this weekend (and Blizzard wasn't there officially at all, likely getting ready for BlizzCon next week instead). But wherever there are dice rolls and card games, you'll probably find some sign of Azeroth. %Gallery-70177%
Fantasy Flight releases World of Warcraft: The Adventure Game
As WoW's main page notes, World of Warcraft: The Adventure Game has been released by Fantasy Flight games. They're also the makers of the Warcraft board game, but apparently they decided there was more of the experience to translate into boardgame form. This boardgame has you controlling just one character, not a full army, and navigating through the Eastern Continent, hacking and slashing (against both enemies and other players -- PvP was given a focus in this one) and leveling up all the way. There are currently four classes that come with the game: Warrior, Hunter, Mage and Warlock (no healers?), and we'd expect that more will be on the way in future expansions.Early reviews at BoardGameGeek (am I showing my nerdiness by saying that I frequent BoardGameGeek to read about some of my favorite boardgames?) have it at about 7/10, which isn't bad. But just like all of these licensed boardgames, just because you're a fan of WoW doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to jump right in and have just as much fun with rolling dice and playing cards.The new game will set you back a retail price of $39.95 (cheaper if you hunt around), and is available now.

Fantasy Flight Games, makers of the WoW series of board games, have commissionas a new line of bronze miniature figures, for all you collectors & tabletop gaming lovers. Apparently they make the perfect size pieces for playing the WoW board games, but if you're like me, you'll have your little green army men fighting off the orcs .while defending the kitchen from the Horde. Too bad you can't paint these up all cool like...
