Following yesterday's appearance on New Zealand's app store, Final Fantasy 6 has hopped the Pacific and is now available to classic RPG fans in the United States. Priced at $16, this most recent remake of the fan-favorite epic features modern graphics, a redesigned user interface, and the ability to save your game directly to the cloud. This version of Final Fantasy 6 boasts all of the additional content found in the 2006 Game Boy Advance remake, including four new Espers, two new areas, three new spells and a handy bestiary. Missing from this release are the full-motion video segments that bookend the 1999 PlayStation incarnation of Final Fantasy 6. There are two caveats to keep in mind before you hand your cash to publisher Square Enix: First, Final Fantasy 6 is compatible only with more recent iOS devices. If you own a model older than the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 you're out of luck. Further, Square Enix notes that "[c]ertain in-game conditions may cause the app to close unexpectedly on iPhone 4," and warns users to save their games frequently. [Image: Square Enix]

An iOS version of Square Enix's classic RPG Final Fantasy 6 launched in New Zealand's App Store today, a phenomenon that usually indicates an imminent North American release. The coming launch follows up on Final Fantasy 6's Android debut last month. Traditionally, games that hit the New Zealand App Store launch in North America the same day at 11PM ET. Square Enix confirmed that a Japanese iOS version will premiere on February 6. [Image: Square Enix]

  • Final Fantasy 6 crashes at midpoint on Android, fix coming soon

If you purchased Square Enix's revamped Android port of the classic Super NES RPG Final Fantasy 6 after it hit Google Play last week, you may want to put your playthrough on hold while its developers sort out a major bug affecting player progress. Currently, the game crashes at a critical point, making the latter half of its storyline inaccessible. Players report that the glitch occurs during a climactic battle between Kefka and General Leo in Thamasa at the game's halfway point. A crash during a cutscene renders the game unbeatable, as story progress is stalled until required events unfold in Thamasa. Publisher Square Enix acknowledges the bug in the game's Google Play description, and promises that an upcoming fix will soon allow players to travel to the Floating Continent and beyond. A release date for the patch has not been announced.

Final Fantasy 6 is now available on Android. The mobile port was originally announced in October by Square Enix producer Takashi Tokita, who expected the game to arrive on both Android and iOS by the end of 2013. While it just missed the mark on its Android release, the game has not yet appeared on iOS. Final Fantasy 6 has been all over the place, as it first launched in 1994 on SNES, was later ported to PlayStation in 1999, Game Boy Advance in 2006 and hit PSN in 2011. The Android version of the game features recreated graphics and shares the "new magicites and events" that were brought forth on GBA. The classic RPG costs $15.99 on the Google Play store.

  • Report: Enhanced Final Fantasy 6 coming to iOS, Android

An updated version of Final Fantasy VI will make its mobile debut on iOS and Android this year, according to Square Enix producer Takashi Tokita. "The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and VI will be the same," Tokita tells Kotaku. For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle systems have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is." Tokita says the graphics will get a touch-up for the mobile release. Final Fantasy VI, which was originally launched in 1994 as Final Fantasy III in North America, takes place within a steampunk world that changes based on player choice. No pricing was mentioned for Final Fantasy VI on mobile but, if previous Square Enix games are any indication, it'll fetch a tidy sum of Gil.

  • Final Fantasy VI headed to iOS, VII may not be far behind

Several classic Square Enix RPGs have already seen new life thanks to iOS ports, and now the company has confirmed to Kotaku that Final Fantasy VI will indeed get the same treatment. The game will be a modified version of the RPG that originally appeared for the SNES back in 1994. The game will be tweaked for touchscreen devices with a refined battle system and sharper graphics. Square Enix director and producer Takashi Tokita also shed some light on the future of Square titles on mobile platforms. Now that Final Fantasy I through VI are taken care of, the next logical step would be to port the beloved PlayStation classic Final Fantasy VII to smartphones and tablets, but Tokita stopped short of making any promises, stating, "If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII."

As part of a concerted effort to connect Final Fantasy XIV to past entries in the franchise, Square-Enix is introducing magitek armor to A Realm Reborn. The armor hails from Final Fantasy VI and takes the form of large bipedal mechanized mounts in the online game. We've got a brief look at the magitek armor in motion after the break, so suit up and don't forget to bring a can of oil for the journey!

  • Transmogging Final Fantasy 6: Terra, Locke, and Celes

Last week, Anne Stickney put together an amazing transmogrification for the Masters of the Universe, which was, admittedly, completely lost on me. I sort of missed out on the whole He-Man, Transformers, and Thundercats thing when I was a kid, probably because I was too busy playing video games. You see, many of my fondest childhood memories involve holding a console controller and trying to save the world in games like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and most of all, Final Fantasy VI -- which was technically Final Fantasy III back then, but that's beside the point. A few months back, I had a reader share a Celes Chere transmog in the comments of one my articles, and I've been wanting to do some Final Fantasy VI transmogs ever since. So for today's column, I've reproduced that reader's transmog, as well as two more for Terra Branford and Locke Cole. I would have liked to do my other two favorite characters, Shadow and Relm Arrowny, but WoW doesn't offer much in the way of fluffy harem pants and skin-tight ninja masks. Phooey! (Ten points if you get that reference.)

  • Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 5 and 6 all coming to PSN in coming weeks

If you, like us, have felt jilted as other territories received a glut of Square Enix RPGs while the U.S. got table scraps, it's time to relieve yourself of your worries. PlayStation Blog has just announced the "Winter of RPGs" campaign, which will see the release of three much-desired PSOne Classics on the PSN: Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6. You'll be able to grab the character-rich Chrono Cross next Tuesday, November 8, the career-oriented Final Fantasy 5 on November 22, and the positively operatic Final Fantasy 6 on December 6. It's nice that they'll finally be on there -- though forcing them to compete for our free time with Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations seems, well, kind of mean.

  • Final Fantasy 6 rated by ESRB for PSP and PS3

We admit -- we might have gotten our dander up a little too quickly following Final Fantasy 6's release in Japan on PSN. We've just been hurt so many times before by Square Enix's Japanese PSOne Classics re-releases, which tend to take a while to come stateside, provided they ever come at all. However, we've got hope for the series sixth, Esper-filled installment: The ESRB recently rated Final Fantasy 6 for U.S. release on PSP and PS3. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean the game's going to come out next week, but it practically ensures that we'll be able to grab it from the PlayStation Store at some point in the future. While we wait for an official release date, why not join us in trying to remember exactly what kind of "Partial Nudity" is featured in Final Fantasy 6? Maybe that's a reference to Ultros? We guess he's totally naked throughout the entire game, but at the same time, he's an octopus. That kind of behavior is to be expected.

  • Final Fantasy 6 coming to PSN in Japan April 20

We're at the end of our wit-rope, you guys. We're not sure how much more of these injustices we can suffer -- we thought that, with the North American PSN release of Vagrant Story and Xenogears, we were on track to catch up to the Japanese PSN's RPG offerings. However, Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto revealed on Twitter yesterday that Japan would be receiving the PSOne remake of Final Fantasy VI on the PSN's Game Archives platform on April 20. For those keeping score, that means the only pre-PS2 Final Fantasy title missing from the platform will be Final Fantasy IV -- though, considering it got its own PSOne remake in 1997, it's really only a matter of time before it shows up. And once it does, you'll be able to hear our anguished cries across the globe.

  • Square Enix undecided about FF5 and FF6 DS remakes

Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto was in the question-answering mood yesterday, responding to a handful of queries thrown his way via the Square Enix Partners Twitter account. After explaining to his curious followers that the company is "undecided" about downloadable ports of Seiken Densetsu 3 and mobile RPG Ever Heart Odyssey, Hashimoto addressed the possibility of DS remakes for Final Fantasy V and VI, stating (according to Andriasang's translation), "for FF5 and 6, there are technical issues as well, so at present these are also undecided." We're not quite sure what that means. The only technical issue we can see in this situation is that Square Enix could put the original versions of both games on a single DS cart, and we would still pay $40 for it, making us technically insane.

One didn't think that Kefka, the insane clown-like villain with the distinctive laugh from Final Fantasy VI, could get any creepier. But he just totally did in the latest Dissida art of him, as revealed by Shonen Jump -- look at the way he's ogling at poor Terra/Tina. She ain't no damsel in distress though; her EX mode named "Trance" is looking pretty powerful. Take a look at the full scan over at PSPHyper.

Baron Soosdon asked me to hold off on showing the last of his Worldwide Invitational machinima contest entries, Final Warcraft VI, until he "remastered" it. Apparently he fine tuned some things that he previously rushed on to meet the deadline. Of course, he had a little help from his friends -- Pinkhair, Caruu, and Mister "Don't forget me!" Drewbie. For all the Final Fantasy VI fans, this machinima closely follows the cinematic ending for the Playstation version.WARNING: Certain browsers are having crashing issues with this movie, so we moved it after the jump.[Via Warcraftmovies.com]If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.Previously on Moviewatch ...

  • The Digital Continuum: Square Enix's next MMO

This recent interview with the Final Fantasy XI team by James "Milkman' Mielky of 1up.com internet fame got me thinking about the next MMO to come from the Square Enix camp. There isn't much meat on them bones as far as the next project goes, but the interview does get the team to talk just a little bit about it. It seems as though one thing is clear: Their newest MMO won't be too similar to Final Fantasy XI. While the developer says that they've learned through mistakes and player response with their original game, it seems that they really want to try something different.I'd be decidedly surprised if Square Enix didn't make a new MMO somehow based in the Final Fantasy universe considering the popularity of the franchise. It's very possible that when FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka said, "-we're not going to make something that'll be exactly like FFXI" He merely meant that mechanically speaking the new game would be very different. Which quite honestly should be a given considering the somewhat esoteric and now archaic control/menu system featured in their first game. Also, it would be nice to play a Final Fantasy MMO that wasn't so harsh on players who died -- losing experience is a deal-breaker for many players these days.

Every Saturday, PSP Fanboy will answer your burning questions. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."Q: What ever happened to the ambitious Final Fantasy VI homebrew remake?A: One man had a vision: to remake the sublime Final Fantasy VI in full 3D on PSP. Sounds crazy? Well, it is--but it's clear that he's still working on it. The problem? We may never see it, according to his forum post: "THIS GAME IS CURRENTLY NOT INTENDED TO BE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC. I DO NOT KNOW IF IT -EVER- WILL BE. MY LAWYER AND I ARE LOOKING INTO IT, AND WHEN WE HAVE A FINAL DECISION ON THIS, YOU WILL BE THE FIRST PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT IT, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE. CURRENTLY, THE SITUATION IS GIVING ME REASON TO LEAN TOWARDS _NOT_ RELEASING IT." Of course, if anything changes, we'll be sure to give you a heads-up! Square's probably going to release this on PSP eventually. Even more questions, after the break! Find out: how does Andrew make PSP Fanboy Theatre look so good? Also, what is AVLS?

The Final Fantasy, much to our enjoyment, never ends. What started as a final attempt became an RPG icon. Final Fantasy has dominated for nearly 20 years now as new installments are released. Square Enix, in their attempts to reach every gamer possible, has made plans to re-release older titles on the GameBoy Advance. They have already released Final Fantasy I/II Dawn of Souls and Final Fantasy IV. Carrying on with the tradition, Final Fantasy V and VI are making their way into our homes. We have already shown you pictures, the web site and now we are offering you a promo video featuring lots and lots of words we can't read. This makes us a sad panda bear. Enjoy! As usual, see the video after the break. [Via Go Nintendo]

  • Ambitious homebrew project attempts 3D FFVI remake

    09.22.2006

This one seems a bit too good to be true. nyxojaele of the Caves of Narshe forums has revealed that he's attempting to make a Final Fantasy VI 3D remake for the PSP. It originally started as an original project for the PC, but once he got his hands on the LTE game engine for PSP homebrew, there was no turning back. He's been very detailed about the process so far, showing screenshots, 3D models and more. A YouTube video he created supposedly shows him launching the game intro using the recently discovered TIFF exploit. Here's what he had to say:"My game is now being ported over to the PSP... The engine I'm now using is called LTE game engine. It's a PSP conversion of the wellknown "Irrlicht" engine for the PC. Since this is a (semi)fullblown GAME engine, instead of just a rendering engine, it'll also save me LOADS of time programming things, such as a sound driver, etc... So, in the last 2-ish weeks, I've been porting my game into the LTE engine, and at the same time, porting it over to the PSP. All is going well, it's just taking time. I have a lot of the internal framework done now, and have started on something you can actually SEE. This is where the fun comes: I've recorded a video of me booting up my PSP, and playing a teaser trailer of my game."Is this all real? Or is it one, incredibly elaborate hoax? I want to believe, and I'm throwing all my support for nyxojaele. Good luck.
