There's a wave of new MMOs on the horizon, and with each one comes a surge of enthusiastic fans ready for launch day. Some are so excited that they want to hit the ground running by joining a guild before the game goes live. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of pre-launch guilds for each upcoming game, and joining one early can help get the most out of a game from day one. But it's hard to find the right guild when you can't really see it in action. How do you know whether the guild you join will end up being the best fit for you? Let's look at how to link up with the best pre-launch guild in this week's Guild Counsel.

Each week, no matter what the topic of this column, there are always comments from players who have had a bad experience with a guild or who have sworn off guilds entirely. Unfortunately, there are quite a few guilds that are poorly managed, and they come with their share of drama, stress, and frustration. But for those that aren't currently in a guild, I'd like to use this week's column to (hopefully) convince you to rethink things and perhaps give it another try. In this week's Guild Counsel, Let's take a look at why unguilded players are in a great position to find a good match, and what things to look for in order to find that perfect guild.
Guide to choosing the right style of guild
Are you searching for a guild of "friendly, mature people" who "have fun" in either a "social" or "raiding" context? You're in luck! You'll find those terms in most guild recruitment ads for WoW's 10 million players worldwide. On second thought, that may be more than good luck; it's more like an avalanche of virtually identical guild profiles. Will those terms help you discern any meaningful distinctions between these groups of players? That's a lot of "friendly" people to sort through. Many guilds are fairly easily described by their schedules and raid progressions (or their lack of either). More likely, though, the essence of your group -- the part that gives it its flavor and makes it stand apart from other guilds -- is somewhat trickier to describe. "Social," "casual," "raiding" ...These terms describe most guilds. And even terms that seem fairly self-explanatory at first glance can be problematic for players trying to evaluate a potential fit. "We're a dedicated roleplaying guild." OK, so what's the spin? One RP guild might maintain a military structure and campaign, while another plays out some very adult-themed interpersonal dramas -- definitely not interchangeable concepts! Our experience is that player and guild drama becomes inevitable when members end up unhappily guilded in a group that doesn't truly fit. The Drama Mamas frequently get mail from players who find their guildmates nice enough but still have that itchy feeling that something just isn't clicking. The fit you want is probably out there, but the terminology and labeling for these guilds hasn't quite caught up yet. What are you looking for in a guild? New characters will attempt new quests, and everything old will be new again. With that in mind, you might find yourself wanting traveling companions with whom to explore this strange, new world. Where can you find those players? A guild. Guilds are the fundamental social building block of the World of Warcraft. There are many different types of guilds. Casual guilds are usually mostly about leveling, hanging out and going whichever way the wind blows them. While many casual guilds raid successfully, groups who define themselves this way aren't motivated by progression. Raiding guilds, by comparison, take their successful raiding very seriously and consider their PvE success an important part of their fun. PvP guilds tend to focus on battlegrounds and arena. But for all that these definitions are common, they aren't absolutes. I've seen few raiding guilds that completely ignore PvP, and some of the most skillful players I know claim they are "casual." Labels just aren't useful in this regard. But with Cataclysm, guild perks will go a long way toward encouraging us to join up with guilds. The Tattered Notebook: Finding the right guild
So I've been back in the world of Norrath for several weeks now, immersing myself in not only the game but the various forums that make up the far-flung community. Class discussions, mechanics, quest guides, the incredible EverQuest II wiki, all of them have flashed across my browser window with regularity over the last little while. I've found anything and everything I ever wanted with regard to information about how to play and enjoy the game, as well as more than a few interesting resources that I can't quite find a use for but enjoy reading nonetheless. The one thing I can't seem to find, and the one thing that seems to be the first and foremost requirement for getting the most out of EverQuest II, is a good guild. Turn the page for more.
