  • Put your photos online with PictureSync

PictureSync is a utility that lets you annotate an upload your photos to a number of online services, including Flickr, Smugmug, Fotki, Zoto, Shutterfly, Photobucket and more. Simply tell it which service you're using, select the pictures you want to upload and you're all set. You can select photos from your iPhoto library, from an iView Media Pro catalog or from a folder in the Finder. That's what they say, at least.I had bad luck using this application. First off, I wanted to use it with my Flickr account. It crashed twice while trying to launch a browser so that Flickr could authenticate it. On the third time it finally worked. Next, I opted to have it select pictures from my iPhoto library, but changed my mind when I saw it wanted to first import all 3,000 photos (the progress bar was creeeeping along). When I instead elected to pull photos from a folder, I received this message:"Finder got an error: Can't get name of every file of folder "". (-1728)"Oops. Eventually I got something uploaded, but not without a lot of undue effort. Your mileage may vary (I'm using a 1.25GHz iMac w/1GB RAM and OS 10.4.5), but I've had to uninstall PictureSync. It requires 10.3.9 or greater and a single license will run you $14US.

  • Flock updates to 0.60, adds features

We've covered Flock before, but just in case you didn't catch our previous posts, here's a quick rundown: Flock is an OS X/Linux/Windows  open source "social web browser" built on the Firefox core, offering various well-integrated tools for contributing back to the web you're browsing. Amongst other things, it has a built-in blogging tool, bookmarks are saved to online sharing services (del.icio.us, and now Shadows), Flickr surfing/uploading and a whole lot more.I bring this all back up because I just noticed that Flock has updated their developer preview to version 0.60, with a lot of additions and improvements: drag and drop Flickr uploading, searching Flickr by tags and text, a new blog editing engine with support for categories in WordPress and other MovableType-based blogs, the shelf can act as a topbar, a new online bookmark service (Shadows.com) with support for private online favorites (del.icio.us doesn't do that), a Technorati topbar, a better RSS reader and more. While Flock is still a developer preview - which really means pre-beta - I recommend you still give it a look. I heard a podcast interview with one of their higher-ups who didn't recommend anyone pick it up as their main browser, but they still do a good number of things that either haven't been done in other browsers, or simply aren't done nearly as well through plugins and extensions. You can download the developer preview here, as well as a full list of release notes and changes here.[UPDATE: I'm not sure what's up with the Flock download page, but version 0.60 is apparently not available for download (the links point to the previous 0.4.10 version). TUAW reader Joel noted in the comments that the most recent version, 0.5.10, is available from the hourly builds page.]

Here it is folks: our inaugural HDTV Showcase. We've had our Flickr pool up for a few weeks now and there are just so many good systems on there we need to give them the props they deserve. We're going to start the showcase off with a TV icon: the Samsung DLP. Flickr user errettp has a big ol' 67-incher sporting the Xbox 360. Just look at the size of that thing. It's huge but at least it's on a nice stand that seems to match the size, while giving it a nice look. Nice setup man. Want to see your HDTV setup on HD Beat? Upload a pic of it to our Flickr pool and we will select a few each week to highlight![More Samsung DLPs after the jump]

  • Poking around with Photocasting

I've been playing around with the new photocasting feature of iPhoto '06 recently. Sadly, no one in my family has a copy of iLife '06, so I'm unable to take part of the fun. Not wanting to be left out, I've grabbed the RSS feeds of some of my Flickr contacts to add to iPhoto. It worked...kind of.For some reason, the Flickr feeds only display a user's ten most recent photos. Dave Chartier and I were messing around with this the other night, deep in the hermetically sealed TUAW offices, and we confirmed this suspicion when he updated his own Flickr pool (to which I had subscribed. Scary thought). You can try it out by subscribing to our "Rigs of the Day" Flickr feed [link].Subscribing to our TUAW news feed [link] pulls the twenty most recent photos from our posts, which is kind of weird because it leaves you with a bunch of out-of-context images. When publishing a photocast, your outgoing images end up in web/sites/iPhoto/ on your iDisk, and the images from subscribed photocasts land in home/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Data on your Mac (I'm glad to see that iPhoto's method of arranging its library is no longer a labyrinth of nested folders). It's definitely a cool thing, and if I were using it for its intended purpose (the grandparents in Florida) I'd probably love it. Are you publishing/subscribing to any 'casts?

Rising up the ranks of my "those with too much time" list, a creative Flickr user by the name of "tsevis" has created an iconic mosaic of Steve Jobs using all sorts of different icons, ranging from product boxes to your favorite pics from the IconFactory. He does a pretty good job of capturing his Steveness in my opinion, and the rest of his Flickr set is equally creative.Kudos, tsevis. Now where's some mosaic love for Ive?[via digg]

  • iPhoto 6 can handle non-.Mac photocasts

While Apple might have coined the term "photocast" (at least I never heard it until Macworld this year), an RSS feed containing images is certainly nothing new. Fortunately, iPhoto 6 knows this, and you can easily subscribe to non-.Mac photocasts simply by using File > Subscribe to Photocast and entering the URL of your favorite photocast. Try our TUAW Flickr feed on for size. The MacOSXHints post where I found this mentioned they had errors the first time they tried a couple feeds, but they wound up behaving on a second try. For the record though, our Flickr feed behaved just fine for me in iPhoto 6 on my PowerBook.

Now here's a person after my own heart. Flickr user bushwood's snapshot features a G5 Power Mac, an original Macintosh, an iPod and a print of the old "Picasso" illustration. I especially like that the original Mac is still running. It's nice to respect your elders."macs" posted by bushwood. If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Today's TUAW Rig of the Day entry (the inaugural entry, at that) is Flickr user visualseed's killer multi-display set up. We're talking about three 30" Cinema Displays, one smaller display, a Powerbook and a DV camera with three lenses, each the size of my leg. A G5 sits in the corner, as well as an iSight, a tablet and...what's that...a Dell?!? We'll just let that slide. I guess a pro photographer needs to diversify."Mac set up and more" uploaded by VisualSeed. If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. You've spent a tremendous amount of time setting up your Mac rig, arranging everything just so, selecting the perfect desk, chair, speaker system, mouse and so on. Why not show it off? To that end, we've created the TUAW Mac Rigs Flickr Pool. Upload your best shot of your rig at home, you set up at school, your mobile solution or your tower of power. Every day, we'll select one shot to feature here on TUAW as the Rig of the Day.We may also select your photos to illustrate our posts, providing full credit, of course - so be sure to include any links you'd like us to use in your Flickr profile. So let's see those sweet rigs!

Wow, when we made a call out for our new HD Beat Flickr group, we had no idea what kind of gear you had! There are some killer setups that putting our own high-def set-ups to shame; just look at illmatic's up above! Let's keep adding to the photo pool: just snap a pic and add it the HD Beat group on Flickr. We love how folks are adding notes to each individual component too; one of the most often asked questions we get from pics are "What model number is that?" If you haven't seen the photos yet, you have to check out some of these true home-theaters. We especially love mnjames's dedicated theater room with ceiling-mounted InFocus projector, blended-in speakers, a mega-big screen and individual comfy chairs! mn, if we promise to bring our Xbox 360 and Windows Media Center PC, can we swing by? We'll even supply the WiFi for streaming!

Here's your chance to share that high-def goodness you found under your tree! Grab your digital camera, snap a pic of your HDTV setup and upload that photo to the all new HD Beat Flickr group! I didn't have anything on my "HD Wish List", so I started the group off with a pic of my current setup. You'll see in the comments that I pointed out what all of the components are. Feel free to put exact model numbers if you don't mind sharing the "privates" of your gear, and tag your photos with "HDBeat".Start uploading those photos to the new HD Beat group and show us what you've got! Who knows, we might use these photos as entries in a random giveaway sometime. Don't wait, show your high-def gear now!

  • Flickr updates Uploadr for OS X

Stop the presses! First we get an actual Mac OS X application utility from Google, and now Flickr's Uploadr for OS X has been updated for Tiger. Isn't this some sort of sign?Anyway, I've been using Uploadr for a little while this evening and it's pretty nice.  Drag and drop images from either iPhoto or the Finder onto the Uploadr application to get started. Transfer a single photo or move several photos in batches. I've put a copy in my Dock as well as my Finder window's toolbar for easy access. It's not going to replace the Flickr iPhoto plugin for me, but I will use it for stray photos that haven't made their way into iPhoto. Flickr Uploadr requires Mac OS 10.3 or better and is free. View some screenshots after the jump.
