Let the mud throwing commence! You've heard it from the horse's mouth: Jack Tretton of Sony doesn't "think the battle would be any different with or without Grand Theft Auto ... I don't think [losing GTA exclusivity] hurts us. ... I really don't."Okay, so Sony ain't scared. But let's get real: it isn't like GTA4 won't be coming to their own console after all. Sure, having exclusivity means a lot. Many of you spoke up with concerns just over the possibility of Assassin's Creed being non-exclusive. But this is Grand Theft Auto and it's been all over the place. Would this being cross-platform really hurt anyone?I guess we'll have to wait and see. The mud slinging continues, however, with a priceless quote from Tretton on the PS3 cost: "Well, I guess if price is the only consideration, then we've won the war, because we've got a $129 PlayStation 2 that outsells the Xbox 360 today."

According to 360Era.com this just might be a screen from Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV (click for an embiggened pic). Hmm, looks about on par with Table Tennis to me. So, is it real? Fake? Frankly, anything with a girl wielding a morning star has my approval. Update 1: It's fake. From Eurogamer: "Rockstar says that an image circulating around web-forums this afternoon, supposedly showing a TV screen running a debug version of Grand Theft Auto IV, is a hoax ... The image ... first showed up in the inboxes of various media organisations this morning under the subject line 'From a disgruntled ex-employee of Rockstar...' ... But that's not the case, Rockstar told us this afternoon. It really is a hoax." Man, fake news travels fast. This screen was circulated and debunked in a matter of hours. Simply amazing. Thanks, Josh. Update 2: It looks like QJ discovered the perpetrator behind this heinous crime. You won't believe who it is. Read the full story here.

So you've probably seen the new 'mace-toting-chick' screenshot of GTA4 that everyone's talking about. No one ever really tipped us off as to which system it was running on, and the graphics don't really convey much either. Well Eurogamer got the skinny and here it is: the image is a fake. Hopefully you don't need a defibrillator after hearing this. They say, "Rockstar told us this afternoon. It really is a hoax."It's pretty unlikely that they're just trying cover it up too. The "disgruntled Rockstar Games employee" submission should have tipped off everyone to begin with. Here's until the next fake screenshot surfaces.

A GTA fanboy has posted on the Games Radar forums what could be one of the first images of what Grand Theft Auto 4 will look like. Going by the name of "fishfingers," the poster claims: "With my work as a GTA fansite owner ...  I get a lot of fan art submitted to me. However, this one was different. It came from 'A disgruntled Rockstar Games employee.'" But haven't we been down this fake image road before? So, really, there's not much to go by except pure speculation. But, the image appears to have many similarities to the GTA franchise -- notice the wanted stars, 3rd person view, and generic street scene. Other than that, it's almost impossible to say. The player character appears to be a female which may suggest a more open world game that some have hinted at. The only potential downsides of this image actually being GTA4 is that it doesn't look as pretty as the engine used for Rockstar's Table Tennis game. Of course, because it's a vague screenshot and the game is still in early development, the actual quality might not be indicative of a final product. Either way, if this thing's real, that ball and chain weapon would be a nice touch ... the dog pissing on the wall is also pretty funny. Mmmmmm, I can smell the litigation now.[Thanks, DC; via News4Gamers][Update 1: Eurogamer says, "Rockstar told us this afternoon. It really is a hoax." We've contacted Rockstar for an official comment. Thanks, Josh.]

  • GTA IV dumps renderware, picks up RAGE

Rumor has it that Grand Theft Auto IV (or GTA4 as the kids call it) will be using Rockstar's RAGE engine (that's Rockstar Advanced Game Engine). Many of you are already familiar with the RAGE engine if you own a copy of Table Tennis. The previous engine, Renderware, is seriously showing its age, and I doubt many will lament its loss. And it doesn't hurt that Table Tennis already looks mighty fine. Is there any chance we might see Tommy Vercetti both pinging and ponging?
