Xbox Live Gold members will receive free access to a downloadable version of Bungie's Halo 3 in October, months after it was initially revealed as part of Microsoft's Games with Gold program. Similar to Sony's PlayStation Plus initiative, the Games with Gold promotion gives subscribers two free Xbox 360 games monthly. Capybara Games' Xbox Live Arcade puzzler Might & Magic Heroes joins Halo 3 as part of October's announced lineup. Previous Games with Gold inductees include Dead Rising 2, Crackdown, and Assassin's Creed 2.

One is a virtual recreation of a card game that has been made obsolete by its recently-released sequel, and the other is a tactical shooter spin-off released in 2006. These dramatically different games, Magic 2013 - Duels of the Planeswalkers and Rainbow Six: Vegas, will be available for free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers this September as part of Microsoft's ongoing Games With Gold promotion. As Major Nelson points out, Magic 2013 is slated to appear on September 1. While the downloadable game normally features a $10 price tag, anyone with a valid Xbox Live Gold account will be able to grab Magic 2013 for free until September 15. Then on September 16, Rainbow Six: Vegas will join the Games With Gold lineup. Unlike Magic 2013, Rainbow Six: Vegas debuted as a retail game, but it too will be available gratis to any Xbox Live Gold subscribers until the end of September.

After plummeting from the colossal height of Agency Tower, why not try a sedate change of pace by dressing up like Elvis and bashing in thousands upon thousands of zombie heads? As of today, Dead Rising 2 takes over from Crackdown as Xbox Live's Games with Gold freebie, meaning Gold subscribers can grab it along with its prologue, DR2: Case Zero, for nada and niente until the end of the month. Both Dead Rising 2 and Case Zero are available for free now - see you at the mall.

Xbox Live Gold members can leap their way across Crackdown or chop their way through Dead Rising 2 for free in August. As part of Microsoft's "Games with Gold" program, starting tomorrow, August 1, Crackdown will be free to agents through August 15. The only cost is how much of your life will be consumed by hunting orbs. Starting August 16, both Dead Rising 2 and its prologue, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, will be gratis through the end of the month. Xbox Live Gold members still have until the end of that day to grab and take a stab at Assassin's Creed 2.

Assassin's Creed 2 is free now to Xbox Live Gold members as part of the Games with Gold program, and stays that way until the end of the month. But don't let the free-runner take all your attention, because there are other Xbox Live Marketplace deals up for grabs this week. First up, the 2011 edition of Mortal Kombat is slashed in half to $10 this week, which is as good as a fatality discount-wise. Some of its DLC is half-price, too, including the Season Pass, and XBLA entry Mortal Kombat Arcade. Meanwhile, Capcom has a publisher sale going on this week. We've spotted the very intense likes of Asura's Wrath, Devil May Cry 4, and Resident Evil 5 at $10, while fighters Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition are at $15, as is the Devil May Cry: HD Collection.

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb confirmed this morning that Assassin's Creed 2 is the next free title in the Xbox "Games With Gold" Program. That means the Italiano assassino romp will be available for all those gratis stabs and requiescat en paces on July 16. Announced during Microsoft's E3 press conference, the "Games with Gold" program highlighted Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo 3 on stage. After a little clarification, it turned out those two titles wouldn't be the first two games due in July. Defense Grid: The Awakening is currently free, with Ezio's exploits up next. There is no announced window for Halo 3 going free at this time.

Microsoft pinned monthly dates to its Games With Gold promotion, with the Xbox Live Gold freebies due on the 1st of 16th of each month. As revealed during Microsoft's E3 press conference, Gold subscribers gain access to two free Xbox 360 games each month until the end of the year. Fable 3 was the first offering, with Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 already announced as coming to the program. "As our way of saying thanks for being part of this community, we're giving all qualifying Gold members two free Xbox 360 games each month for the rest of the year." reads the promotion's site. "Each specially selected, fan-favorite game will be available to download only for a limited time, so grab them before they're gone and keep them no matter what." Update: Xbox's Major Nelson has since clarified Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 aren't the two games due in July. This post has been amended to reflect that.
