  • Lost Pages of Taborea: Call to arms!

It's only been a few months since I started writing the Runes of Magic column, but it seems much longer than that. I love writing these guides, tips, and opinion pieces for fans of this awesome MMO, but I felt something was missing. Even after all the terrific comments and discussions from players, there seems to be many people who haven't tried RoM yet. Seeing comments -- almost weekly -- about people saying they are going to try RoM is really cool. I am a huge fan of the game, and it's my intention to bring the fun and excitement of it to you, through my articles. I'm not hoping that I stop hearing about new players, because those comments are a small sign I've succeeded in my writings, but I do want to take the opportunity to present a "call to arms". RoM is an amazing one-of-a-kind MMO that has captured my imagination and adventure for fun. It can be all too easy to lump this game into an already complicated world of free-to-play MMOs, and dismiss it as "more of the same". It really isn't more of the same. Let's take a look at how this MMO is different, fun, steadily growing, and branching out into the MMO community. This article should catch everyone up on the current status of the game, and how it has faired in the spotlight.

  • AT&T handing out free 3G MicroCells to loyal customers? (update: it's a market trial)

    by

    07.10.2010

While we've no clue how widespread AT&T's generosity is, or how you might get one, it appears that the company's "most valuable customers" are now receiving free range-boosting femtocells. Today, loyal reader Jason got a old-fashioned paper letter in the mail, offering his iPhone-wielding family a 3G MicroCell with no strings attached. Driving down to the local AT&T store, he got the product, but the dumbfounded reps offered no explanation why. Though his calls do frequently drop at home, Jason says he wasn't terribly vocal about the issue and only pays around $180 per month for his family plan -- the only thing that might possibly qualify him, in his opinion, is that his contract was set to expire. We've reached out to AT&T for more information; in the meanwhile, see Jason's letter after the break. [Thanks, Jason] Update: We're being told that AT&T is currently in the process of trialling different ways of offering the MicroCell, which is why a handful of customers have received this letter. We suspect you're always going to get positive reactions when you're offering something for free... but maybe we're crazy.

BuzzVoice is an app that lets you listen to the Internet anywhere, by reading stories to you from over 1400 sources that are selectable right in the app. It's something like Pandora for blogs. We reviewed BuzzVoice some time ago when it was first released and liked it quite a lot. Some time later, it was released for the iPad making it easier to use. Now a new version BuzzVoice 3.0 (US$4.99 as an introductory price which will be raised to $9.99) is about to hit the app store with some significant new features. Instead of being limited to a buzzcast running between 15-20 minutes. The new version will play story after story for as long as you want to listen, providing hours of spoken information. The number of sources has been increased by about 2,000 200, bringing over 16,000 sites available for your listening pleasure. 05.15.2010

Over the past two weeks we've been running some awesome weekly contests for readers to win EVE Online game time courtesy of CCP Games. In celebration of the upcoming launch of EVE's Tyrannis expansion, we gave away 10 PLEX in our planet screenshot contest two weeks ago. Last week, we ran a caption competition with a 15 PLEX prize total and received a flood of entries. So many in fact that we're still debating which captions should win a prize. The winners of that contest will be posted as an update to the second contest post within the next few days and the winners will all be notified via email. This week marks the last week of our Tyrannis contest trilogy and to end on a high-note we're giving away a whopping 25 PLEX. Ten top prizes of two PLEX are available and a further five runner-up entrants will get one PLEX each. To enter, all you have to do is write a short piece of fiction based on the planets and moons of New Eden and submit it to the comments on this post. Entries are limited to 200 words or less as we're sure to get a huge number of entries and we want to give each one the full attention it deserves. Your entry can take the form of a short story, a poem or any other type of written fiction. Prizes will be awarded based on creativity, writing style and presentation. As with the previous two competitions, this contest is open to readers from any country. UPDATE: Entry is now closed. We are now reading through the submissions and picking winners! UPDATE 2: Winners have been selected! The list of winners has been added to the end of this post. Each winner will be contacted via email to arrange delivery of their prizes. Skip past the cut for the contest rules and full submission guidelines.

I wrote about Fruit Ninja last week, and since then it's been very popular on the App Store. Creators Halfbrick Studios tell us it's sold quite well so far. The game's simple, but well-polished and a lot of pick-up-and-play fun. It's only $1, so there's no reason not to go over and get it yourself. Just in case you haven't, though, Halfbrick has sent us a few promo codes for the game to give away to five lucky TUAW commenters. Want to win a copy of Fruit Ninja? Here are the rules: Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older. To enter, leave a comment on this post telling us what kind of fruit you like slashing most. The comment must be left before midnight EST on Thursday, May 6th, 2010. • Hyundai Equus now comes with an iPad

    by
    Dave Caolo

    04.06.2010

If you're willing to spent 5 grand on an iPad, why not cough up an additional 50 and get one sweet accessory: A Hyundai Equus. For a limited time, Hyundai is cashing in on the iPad frenzy by offering one to every customer who buys a 2011 Equus. Rather than just tossing it on the back seat, the iPad will contain the car's user manual, which Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik calls, "interactive." There aren't a lot of details on the app (we assume it's an app), but customers will be able to use it to schedule maintenance appointments. We don't know which model is being offered, so you'll have to call your friendly neighborhood Hyundai dealer to find out. Of course it's free, so you can't really complain. If you get one, please let us know.

Ahhh, the joys of being in the Apple press! We're constantly getting a stream of items, both hardware and software, to review. Here at TUAW, it is our policy to never keep anything so that we can't be accused of being "bought" for a review. So when a boxful of mobile-oriented goodies from Apple-friendly retailer Dr. Bott showed up in the mail the other day, our immediate thought was to give them away to some lucky TUAW reader! This giveaway is oriented towards those of you who have both a MacBook of some sort and an iPhone 3G or 3GS. Here's what's in the mix: Moshi ClearGuard MB -- this clear urethane keyboard protector is one-fifth the thickness of silicone protectors, and is completely washable and reusable. It works with any of the existing MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air laptops from Apple. It's valued at US$24.99. Speck CandyShell -- If you have an iPhone 3G or 3GS, you're going to love this case with the hard shell and soft center. This is the "green/green" version, which is very... green. It's worth $12.99. Matias Mini Rizer -- this is perfect for those situations where you want to watch a TV show or movie on your iPhone or iPod touch, but you don't feel like holding it for a couple of hours. This clear plastic, credit card-sized stand is adjustable to two angles, and has a suggested retail price of $14.95. Skullcandy Rasta Sweatband and Skull Necklace -- Skullcandy makes some great headphones as well as iPhone and iPod accessories. You'll be bangin' with your Rasta sweatband and skull necklace, valued at $5.95 and $9.95 respectively. Road Tools Podium CoolPad -- This sweet little pivoting laptop stand will work with just about any laptop Apple has ever made, except for that old Mac Portable... This one is black, will probably work with your iPad, and retails for $29.95. ThemaPAK HeatShift Pad -- We saw these selling like hotcakes at Macworld Expo 2010. These pads use special heat-absorbing crystals and can lower the temperature of your MacBook by 6 degrees Celsius. This one is made for 13" MacBook models, and comes in black. The suggested retail price is $28.00 So there you have it -- a happy mix of goodies for your MacBook and iPhone (or iPod touch) enjoyment. • The Daily Grind: Do you follow your favorite game on Twitter?

    by
    Rubi Bayer
    Rubi Bayer
    12.24.2009

Since MMO developers are in the business with the intention of making a profit, it's no surprise that nearly all of them offer items for sale. The number of cash shops accompaning games these days has seen a sharp rise as well, as developers seek to keep the profits coming in an increasingly free-to-play climate. If you hate to part with a buck, the good news is that you can get quite a few of these items free if you're quick. Twitter is a seemingly neverending source of freebies and news on giveaways for game fans these days, you just have to know who to follow. Want some Turbine Points, but are a little short on cash this week? Keep an eye on Turbine's Twitter feed. Ditto if you love the new Dwayna and Grenth costumes, but don't feel like shelling out for them. These are just a couple of examples, so we want to know: do you follow your favorite game or company on Twitter, and have you been a winner? Who is your favorite for giving away cash shop items?
