After a busy month of shortlist voting, the 2010 People's Gaming Awards -- otherwise known as the Golden Joystick Awards -- has finalized the ballot and opened the polls to the gaming public. These awards are trumpeted as "by the players, for the players," with hundreds of titles whittled down into a shortlist of finalists. While many single-player console and PC titles are represented across the 16 categories, several MMOs have waded into the fray looking for your vote (ironically, few of them can be played with a joystick). Star Wars: The Old Republic is nominated for the "One to Watch" award, Jagex and Codemasters have a shot at "UK Developer of the Year," and 2029 Online, Aion, Allods, Champions Online, Dragonica, Fallen Earth, Global Agenda, Star Trek Online and Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood are some of the MMOs vying for "Online Game of the Year." As for the "Ultimate Game of the Year" award, only one MMO made the cut: Aion. You can cast your votes in the 28th Golden Joystick Awards from now through October 25, and watch the results on October 29. With over 1.2 million votes cast last year and current voting in the six digits, this year's Golden Joystick Awards look to be one of the most popular award ceremonies for 2010.

Believe it or not, 2010 marks the Golden Joystick Awards' 28th ceremony -- the oldest in the business. These prestigious awards are handed out every year to the best of the best in the gaming industry, and have the distinction of being voted on by Mr. and Ms. Public Gamer (i.e., You). If you're planning on casting a ballot for this year's ceremony, you'd better hurry, as the award voting ends tomorrow, May 27th. Several MMORPG companies and titles are up for possible statues, including: One to Watch Award: All Points Bulletin, DC Universe Online, Final Fantasy XIV, Guild Wars 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic Online Game of the Year Award: Too many to list Roleplaying Game of the Year Award: Global Agenda Ultimate Game of the Year Award: Champions Online, Fallen Earth, Global Agenda, Star Trek Online It's not too late (yet) to put one of these MMOs on the winner's platform, so get over there and vote today!

We don't want you to be confused, so let's take this one step at a time. A "Golden Joystick" is an award handed out by the British public. This year's winners were revealed last Friday and Call of Duty 4 took top honors, winning "Ultimate Game of the Year", "Online Game of the Year" and "PC Game of the Year." A full list of winners can be found here.A "Golden Joystiq" is what happens when Joystiq continues to punch stone columns and collect Spirit Balls even after it has gotten its beast form. We hope that clears things up.

When we saw Gears of Wars hoisted up at the 25th annual Golden Joystick Awards, we scratched our heads and checked the calendar. Yep, it is 2007. So why is Gears still winning 'Game of the Year' awards? As it turns out, the people's choice ceremony was honoring games form last year, and a few, like God of War II, which sorta seem like games from last year. The rather untimely celebration featured nominees like Guitar Hero II and Call of Duty 3 just as their respective sequels prepare to enter the market. Halo 3 Beta was considered among the 'Innovations' of the year, but the actual game, well, that will have to wait until ... next year. Full list of award winners follows.

The Xbox 360 was well represented at 24th Annual Golden Joystick Awards held in London on Friday, taking home trophies in several categories:dT3 Innovation Award Xbox Live Marketplace (Microsoft)Xbox Game of the Year The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2K Games)1Xtra Soundtrack of the Year Need for Speed Most Wanted (Electronic Arts)Editors' Choice Award Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (Ubisoft)PLAY.com Ultimate Game of the Year The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2K Games)The Golden Joystick Awards are voted on by the gaming public, with the exception of the Editor's Choice, which, as you may have guessed, is decided by a panel of editors. Normally, we cynical bloggers don't put much stock in self-congratulatory awards shows, but this one feels less commercial than the wack fests sponsored by G4 and MTV.

  • The DS brings home a few Golden Joysticks

When gamers choose, the DS wins! A few awards, at least. And oh, shall we ever covet them. At the Golden Joystick awards, wherein most winners are chosen by the gaming public, Nintendogs took home Family Game of the Year and Girl's Choice, and New Super Mario Bros. snagged Nintendo Game of the Year. Poor Mario Kart DS was the bridesmaid of the day -- nominated for several awards and winning naught but a big goose egg. Oh well. It still reigns in our hearts.

  • Voting opens for GJAs, proceed with caution

Computer & Video Games has announced the ballot boxes are now open for the 24th annual Golden Joystick (not "Joystiq") Awards, one of the longest running events in the industry. While CVG promotes the Golden Joysticks as the "people's awards", you have to wonder if they use the same selection committee as Spike TV when determining the nominees for each category. One disgruntled Joystiq reader is appalled that 50 Cent: Bulletproof somehow managed to collect five nominations (we feel your pain, Sizer), despite the game's metascores being true to its namesake. This smacks of commercialism, but then again it gives the GJAs that gritty, urban flava that you know just personifies all gamers.Another questionable nomination is Shadow the Hedgehog for The Sun's Family Game of the Year. Isn't that the one with the gun-toting, foul-mouthed, "edgy" Sonic wannabe (and a combined metascore of 49)? On behalf of the kiddies, I'll pass. How about the decision to limit the Nuts All-Nighter award to console and handheld games? Does this mean MMOs and other PC games are only addictive outside the UK? That's just nutty! Wait, where's the award for best gaming blog? Oh, never mind.
