Google Search will highlight data journalism to fight fake news
Data journalism, which brings stories to life by showing facts in a visual way, is a key in the fight against fake news. Working with news sites and publishers, Google is bringing that information front and center to consumers in its Search results. Now, when you Google specific subjects like a non-profit's expenses for a given year, it'll show specific tabular data right at the top of the page ahead all other results.
Google reveals its most-searched ‘How To’ tips
It's easy to forget how difficult DIY repairs were just a couple of decades ago, considering how easy the internet makes it to fix very specific product problems. (My biggest personal victory was fixing a 50-inch LG plasma display that borked a week after the warranty expired, following some extensive Googling.) Now, Google has created a site that shows exactly what you want to fix, do and learn the most, based on where you live.
Google's News Lab helps journalists with their online reporting
Google's efforts to improve internet journalism are going far, far beyond a special YouTube feed. The search firm has officially launched the Google News Lab, an initiative that helps reporters collect and publish news online. The Lab shows journalists how to use Google tools like data visualizers, Maps and Trends. It's also partnering with news outlets on data experiments, fostering media startups and supporting citizen journalism. Google hopes that all these tutorials and team-ups will adapt journalists to the direct, data-driven nature of internet reporting -- and, no doubt, show that the company isn't always at odds with publishers.
