  • Wii Warm Up: Budget hits

There was some recent discussion at MCV about a budget label of Wii games, and we can't help but think it's past time someone rolled out a line of reduced-price games. While it's true that many of the system's games are typically available at budget prices, we still think it might be an excellent idea to give some of the system's games a second chance on retail shelves. What would you choose for a budget line?

  • Print ads hint at PS3 greatest hits: Resistance, Motorstorm, Warhawk

Two retail print ads have shown what appears to be three PlayStation 3 titles getting the "Greatest Hits" treatment. The trio shouldn't be surprising: Resistance, Motorstorm and Warhawk. A Kmart print ad shows box art with a red banner reading "Greatest Hits," while a Circuit City ad shows the same three games, sans new packaging, for $30. (You can tell it's the most recent ad since Soul Calibur IV is mentioned as coming out this week.) We expect an official announcement at Sony's press conference this week at E3 2008.[Via PS3 Fanboy]Source - Circuit City adSource - Kmart ad

Click for full ad So earlier we posted an image found in a KMart Entertainment Guide which gave us a hint at a US greatest hits line. Now, an anonymous tipster sends word of another print ad; this time it comes from Circuit City. Our tipster points out that while the games in the image do not have the red plastic covers, the games listed are exactly the same as the ones found in the KMart ad.What's most interesting about this is that the same three games found in the KMart ad are getting a budget price at Circuit City starting July 27. You can tell the ad is for the week of July 27 as the full page reveals that Soulcalibur IV is "in store Tuesday." The games are all priced at $30. If this is related to a greatest hits list, then this seems to fit in line with Japan's "the best" pricing which also averages around that price point as well. It would also mean that these greatest hits boxes have been in print for awhile, if they are indeed to hit stores later this month. Again, nothing is for certain yet, but we're sure we'll hear something about this at E3.

Here's an early taste of something most likely to be at Sony's Tuesday press conference. In this image, taken from a KMart Entertainment Guide by reader Josh, it appears that three PS3 games are going to get the greatest hits treatment -- which also means a US line of greatest hits title are on the way. If true, expect to hear an official announcement on Tuesday. And, if so, it sounds like another one of our predictions came true -- this time, a pretty big one. We can smell bingo already.[Update: new high-res pics have been uploaded to Flickr. Thanks, Josh!]

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters isn't the only PSP game being slashed down to the budget price of $20. The top-down shooter, Killzone Liberation is also joining the bestselling Greatest Hits lineup. This is a terrific deal for a solid action game. Certainly, Sony's trying to raise a bit of awareness before that little PS3 game comes out. You know, that game called Killzone 2. For those that pick up Liberation, don't forget to pick up the free bit of DLC for the game: it includes Infrastructure multiplayer and an additional single player chapter. %Gallery-20189%

It's a scientific fact that $20 is a magical price point for console games. It's the price at which our judgment of what's worth buying and what's not begins to blur and we falter, letting our baser instincts hold sway. "Why do you own Kinetica?" a friend will ask incredulously, before a look silences him and he understands all to well: It was $20.Well here's a $20 purchase you can be proud of: God of War II has just attained "Greatest Hits" status, meaning that if you haven't purchased it yet you have an errand to run on your way home from work. Trust us, you'll be glad you picked it up ... unlike some $20 purchases. (We're looking at you, Fugitive Hunter.)

The Greatest Hits line-up continues to grow. Well, at least according to amazon.com and Best Buy. Greatest Hits games are available at a budget price of $20. If you didn't pick up Size Matters yet, this is a great time to pick up a copy. Our review was quite favorable on Ratchet's first PSP outing -- at $20, it's a stellar deal. This price drop seems appropriately timed to get PSP fans ready for the upcoming Secret Agent Clank, another PSP follow-up to the always-popular Ratchet franchise.[Thanks, MikkoH.!]%Gallery-11888%

  • Sony: Platinum PS3 titles likely coming to Europe

    02.04.2008

After learning of Sony's plans to release a budget lineup in Japan, the most shocking news of the day appears to be that Sony also plans on doing the same throughout other regions, as well. A Sony representative told GamesIndustry.biz that,"we have introduced a Platinum range of best-selling titles for all of our platforms to date, and it is likely that we will do so in the future for PS3. However, no decisions have yet been made on timing or line-up."Of course, we all knew it was just a matter of time before Sony released it's PlayStation 3 the Best, Platinum, Greatest Hits or whatever else it chooses to call them throughout the world. Now, the questions that remain are when they'll arrive, how much they'll be priced at and if the same games will get selected across all major regions.

Savior of stingy spenders and bane of box art, the budget lineup, is set to incorporate several PlayStation 3 titles in Japan next month. IGN reports that the official "PlayStation 3 the Best" branding will highlight familiar titles at friendlier prices, with Resistance: Fall of Man, FolksSoul (aka Folklore), Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Gundam: Target in Sight, and Ridge Racer 7 pinching the first pennies -- or, uh, yanking the first yen. The "Best" games will sell for ¥3,800 ($36), which represents a saving of roughly ¥2,200 ($21) for Sony-published games and ¥3,200 ($30) for third-party titles. On the other side of the ocean, Sony told GamesIndustry.biz that a similar "Platinum" range of budget games would likely arrive in Europe. "We have introduced a Platinum range of best-selling titles for all of our platforms to date, and it is likely that we will do so in the future for PS3," said a spokesman, noting that the timing and lineup had yet to be finalized. We'll let you know what Sony America has to say about a budget lineup as soon as they accept our collect call. Read -- "PlayStation 3 the Best" for Japan Read -- "Platinum" for Europe

  • Budget-priced PS3 titles on their way to Japan

It appears that Sony is set to launch a PlayStation budget line in Japan titled "PlayStation 3 the Best." A Japanese retailer posted the first lineup, which includes Resistance: Fall of Man, FolksSoul, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Gundam: Target in Sight and Ridge Racer 7 priced at 3,800 yen with a March 19 ship date.Like the Xbox 360's Platinum Hits, PlayStation 3 the Best line will be more expensive than the last generation, and while there's been no official announcement, it's probably fair to reason that once the budget titles come stateside, they'll be priced at $30.It's about time the Greatest Hits comes our way, and we think it's a great way for Sony to continue the positive momentum it gained over the holidays.

The $30 price drop isn't exclusive to GameStop/EB Games--it's universal. But, that's not where the savings end. Sony has also added two more games to PSP's Greatest Hits lineup: Daxter and Syphon Filter.According to the press release, "We have always been passionate about making great entertainment accessible to everyone, and the new price for PSP, as well as the continued growth of the 'Greatest Hits' library, reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting and expanding the PSP community," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We are pleased that we are able to engineer savings for the consumer at this stage of PSP's lifecycle, allowing more individuals to experience PSP for the first time. In particular, we have recently seen a steady rise in the number of teens adopting PSP as their primary handheld entertainment system, and we expect the new price will accelerate that trend."Sony also reminds players that the future of PSP is quite bright, especially with the upcoming God of War: "Ready At Dawn couldn't be more pleased with our success bringing Daxter to the PSP platform last year, and now we have another opportunity to blow away expectations of what a developer can accomplish on a portable when Kratos hits the 'small screen' in God of War," said Didier Malenfant, co-founder and president, Ready At Dawn Studios. "PSP is an ideal platform for us to work on because we have a high level of freedom to be creative, and we can deliver gameplay experiences that rival ones you'd get from a computer entertainment system."[Update: According to Engadget, the PSP Entertainment Pack will also receive a $30 cut, from $250 to $220.]

Sony loves promoting the friendly blobs of LocoRoco. Although the game a lot of critical acclaim, it still hasn't garnered the sales warranted by such quality. Well, Sony's not giving up yet. Sony has announced that the game has entered "The Best" status in Japan, which is similar to America's Greatest Hits program. The game will be reissued as a budget title on February 22nd for the low price of 2800 yen. LocoRoco joins other recent additions to "The Best" series, such as: Initial D: Street Stage, We Love Katamari, Metal Gear Acid 2, and Bleach: Heat the Soul 2. Hopefully, we'll see our American version reach budget status soon.

It appears that the first GTA PSP game is now a budget Greatest Hits title. Best Buy lists the game with a $20 price tag and the trademark red banner on top. At this price, the PSP version now competes with the PlayStation 2 version of the game, and still retains PSP-exclusive features like multiplayer. Liberty City Stories may feature slightly worse graphics than the Vice City follow-up, but with a better storyline and funnier missions, this might be the game to pick up for GTA newbies, especially at such a bargain price.[Via CAG]

According to the press release the game "includes updated fighting and stamina systems, impressive graphics, integrated motion capture technology and authentic SuperStar voiceovers, bringing game play to life with unprecedented levels of realism and strategy during matches." They forgot to mention that the game also features some of the worst load times... ever. Those of you with great patience may want to give this a shot, though.
