What are you up to from 10am PST/1pm EST on Tuesday May 5th? Heads up -- that's either today or tomorrow, depending on when you're reading this. Cancel those plans, because you've got a playdate for "at least a couple of hours" with some of the developers of Killzone 2 in their snazzy new Steel And Titanium maps. There will be official Guerrilla Games servers made available starting at these times, the passwords for which can be obtained through the PlayStation Blog twitter account before the event begins. There will also be various Guerrilla Games developers snooping around the various public servers, in case you don't make it into the official servers. Europeans will be happy to hear that a similar event will be held for them "very shortly after." We're taking that to mean a matter of days, rather than a matter of hours.

A laundry list of fixes and features are planned for Killzone 2's 1.24 patch, set to go live on April 22. Included in the patch are fixes for multiple multiplayer exploits and a number of stability issues. The patch arrives just as Japanese gamers are about to welcome Killzone 2 to stores on April 23 and promises to sync files in preparation of the launch.According to detailed patch notes on the official PlayStation forum, Guerrilla Games hopes patch 1.24 will make finding and connecting with friends much easier and have spiced up multiplayer competition by including three additional ranks to the top of the rankings -- known as 'Hardcore ranks.' But our favorite addition has to be new load screens that advertise the upcoming DLC, 'Steel and Titanium,' releasing on April 30.At this rate, the next patch may as well add a giant hand that reaches out from your console to slap anyone who passes on the DLC. Detailed patch notes can be found after the break.[Via CVG]

The first, called "Steel and Titanium" (finally, some gray in Killzone! -- ed.) will feature two maps, one set on the ISA tech cruiser "New Sun" and featuring more vertical gameplay, and one aboard two Helghast freight trains that can be leapt between, if you're willing to brave the environmental hazards. Go here and skip to 7:50 to see for yourself.Guerrilla boss Herman Hulst went on to reveal that the 2nd DLC pack would include the word "Retro" and would likely include some Killzone 1-related content. So, what would you like to see make the jump to modern day?

Maybe it was that snazzy commercial or those poor souls who confused it with Dead Space, but Killzone 2 has set a sales record, becoming the fastest first-party PS3 title to reach 500,000 units sold. Scott Steinberg, VP of Product Marketing at SCEA, added that the game is the highest-selling SCEA PS3 title for the first 30 days out of launch, saying the company was "extremely happy with the results."Now, let the comment debate over why Killzone 2 should have sold more (or less) commence!

Have you seen the Killzone 2 TV commercial? The "Behind the Bullet" ad focuses on the journey of a single bullet in the Helghan battlefield. The entire commercial was rendered in real-time on the PS3, and players will be able to see the proof this week. A free PlayStation Network download will allow people to manipulate the visuals of the commercial in real-time and see all the various elements that go into creating the chaotic landscape of the ad. For a behind-the-scenes look at the, uh, behind-the-scenes making of the ad, check out GTTV.

You know, you live a tough life. You spend all day working for The Man, spend all night taking care of your family, with only a few moments at the end of the day for Killzone 2. In those all too brief minutes, you shouldn't have to put up with a lack of standardization of the Y-Axis controls on the HGH Scout when zoomed with the Sniper Rifle. Beginning tomorrow at 4 a.m. EDT, you won't have to. Guerrilla Games has just announced via its Twitter feed that you can expect a new patch to arrive at that time.Sure, there are other things fixed by the 1.21 update -- in fact, we've got a full list after the break. But we're not going to waste any more of your time. You live a tough life.

  • Guerrilla fixing Killzone 2 bugs, looking into control complaints

Despite being intentionally designed as a "weighty, slower, more tactical first person experience," Killzone 2 is taking some flak for its sluggish controls. Producer Seb Downie had previously stated that "no changes [were] required to the system" with regards to last month's demo, but now that the final game is out, Guerrilla Games is changing its tune. Included in an official list of things to be patched, Downie notes that controller issues are being looked into: "Any possible changes will have to be carefully implemented and tested before being deployed though." This is a stark contrast in tone whereas the previous message implied that Guerilla would not alter anything -- they just might do something now. As for the things that will definitely be patched, Guerilla has revealed it's working on bot solutions, network issues and other problems. Check after the break for the full list of fixes.

SCEE has released (via ThreeSpeech) the first part of a behind-the-scenes Killzone 2 documentary, which focuses on the atmosphere of Helghan and player-immersion. Various members of the development team, Guerrilla Games, are seen describing the game while apparently in Helghan -- some classy special effects guys! There's also plenty of gameplay and cutscene footage without their ugly mugs transposed over top. Find the first video after the break. The second part will be released on Monday.

Where are the commercials? Killzone 2 is just a few days away and advertising for the game has been mysteriously absent. That's about to change as SCEA has just unveiled its 30 second spot, to air tomorrow on "several networks." The spot focuses on a single sniper bullet, traveling through a chaotic battlefield. It reminds us a lot of last year's Angelina Jolie flick Wanted -- what do you think of it?

  • Killzone developer mentions co-op DLC

    by

Yes, Killzone 2 is a great game. But you know what would make it even greater? Co-op. Those that play the single-player adventure soon realize that the computer AI partners aren't up to snuff -- a "human" squad-mate would be a much better ally in the fight against the Helghast ... or is it: the Helghast's fight against you ... Producer Angie Smets talked about post-release DLC on the European PlayStation site. She notes that split-screen co-op had to be axed due to the overwhelming graphical demands of the game. However, the team at Guerrilla Games is looking into what they can do once the game is out to the public. "We're investigating [co-op] now for downloadable content," she says. "We're looking at what would be the nicest possible things for downloadable content. We've already started on maps ... we're not allowed to talk about anything else unfortunately!" Additional maps for the multiplayer mode are a must, given today's necessity for multiplayer DLC. However, we're most hoping for some kind of co-op mode. Guerilla Games offered some game-changing updates to its PSP game, Killzone Liberation -- we're hopinng the team will be able to follow suit for Killzone 2. [Via Co-Optimus]

Killzone 2's presence on the PlayStation Blog continues to ramp up as we approach the game's release. A live chat with Seb Downey of Guerilla Games will take place on the Blog on February 18th at 12:00pm PST. So if you fancy getting some Killzone 2 info straight from the horse's mouth, you'd better turn up.
