  • Logitech and Activision developing premium instruments for Guitar Hero

Activision and Logitech have announced a partnership through which Logitech will create "premium" instrument controllers for Guitar Hero: World Tour. It's not exactly clear from the press release, but we believe this means that Logitech will sell nicer, more expensive versions of the stock Guitar Hero instruments, not that they're producing the ones that come with the game. The new instruments will be fully compatible with World Tour, which basically means that the drums will have the appropriate number of pads and the guitar will have an insane touch pad on the neck. It's not too much of a surprise, after Rock Band got its set of expensive drums, for Guitar Hero to follow suit with "premium" instruments. For extra instruments, this may not turn out to be a bad thing, since Logitech generally makes high quality peripherals. It seems like an uncomfortable position for RedOctane. They started out making music-game peripherals, including those for Guitar Hero, and moved into publishing. Now Activision owns them and publishes Guitar Hero, and Logitech is making instruments.

  • Rumored GH World Tour set list is fake

We hope you weren't excited by the supposed Guitar Hero World Tour set list that was 'leaked' yesterday. Activision and Red Octane have made it known that the list, which included artists like Tool and The Doors, is a fake. A representative informed Game Informer (see what we did there?) that while some of the songs on the list will make it into the game, namely Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher," the majority of the list is "wishful thinking and pure speculation."But hey, we know it will have "Hot for Teacher," right? That counts for something. Now all we have to do is get Activision to confirm the rest of the set list ... one song at a time.[Via Joystiq]

We hope you didn't get your hopes up regarding Guitar Hero World Tour's hypothetical set list, which included songs from such bands as REO Speedwagon, Rob Zombie, and whole lot of Tool. Game Informer reports that both Activision and Red Octane have come forward, denouncing the list as a fraud. While some of the tracks listed will make it into the game, such as Van Halen's Hot for Teacher, the report calls the lion's share of the list "wishful thinking and pure speculation." We're sorry Tool fans, but you'll have to get your progressive rock fix somewhere else.

Coming by way of a post over on Gamespot's Gamefaqs forums is a supposed complete list of all the tracks to to be included in Guitar Hero World Tour's setlist. But with absolutely no explanation where the list came from or how it was discovered, we have no choice but to be very, very skeptical. The rumored to be complete setlist (viewable after the break) includes some 73 main songs, 14 bonus tracks, 7 sample songs and 3 guitar battles against Ted Nugent, Zakk Wylde and Sting. Also, if this list turns out to be true, let us be the first to show our excitement for Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama". We sing that song daily while we chow down on breakfast in the morning and we don't even live in Alabama.

[UPDATE: Click here for the real full list, straight from the folks at Activision. While you're at it, you may want to examine our Instrument Compatibility Matrix and see which of your plastic instruments will work with which game. Yes, this is seriously a major concern for our kind.]The supposed full set list for Guitar Hero World Tour has been making its way around the forums (Something Awful, GameFAQs). The 87-song list is divided by 73 main tracks and 14 bonus tracks. Additionally, there are 3 guitar battles (Ted Nugent, Zakk Wylde ... and renowned bassist Sting) and 7 "sample songs," presumably for the song creation mode. We're still looking into the source of the list; with no official word from Activision or Neversoft, consider this a rumor. Full set list after the break.

Looks like Activision is ready for some blood in the battle against Rock Band; after scoring Van Halen and the Eagles as exclusives, they have now secured the lengendary Jimi Hendrix into their lineup for Guitar Hero: World Tour. Hendrix will be a playable character in the game, and two master tracks have also been confirmed to be in the game, with more tracks coming later as downloadable content: "Purple Haze (Live)" (recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena) "The Wind Cries Mary" In Legends of Rock news, three songs are set to debut this Thursday on Guitar Hero III. We honestly think the tracklist speaks for itself: "Surfing with the Alien" by Joe Satriani "For the Love of God" by Steve Vai "Soothsayer" by Buckethead This "Virtuoso Pack" will be released this Thursday. While no pricing info was provided, we can assume it will be $6.25 like previous 3-track packs.[Via Joystiq and press release]

As if you needed another reason to be pumped for Guitar Hero: World Tour, the legendary guitar virtuoso himself is going to be featured in Activision's title. Not only will he be a playable character in the game, but master tracks for two of his songs will be featured. These tracks are: "Purple Haze (Live)" (recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena) "The Wind Cries Mary" If that isn't enough for you, Activision also said that Hendrix content will be releasing for the game in the future, in the form of DLC, joining the ranks of Metallica. Activision today (officially) scored a major player for Team Guitar Hero (take that Rock Band!), landing Jimi Hendrix, who will make his posthumous "video game debut" in Guitar Hero World Tour. Hendrix will feature as a playable character in the game, and two master tracks from the fire-casting rock star will ship on the game disc: "Purple Haze (Live)" (recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena) "The Wind Cries Mary" Additionally, Activision has announced plans to release more, unnamed Hendrix tracks as downloadable content. Seeing as how Rolling Stone has named Hendrix the "Greatest Guitarist Evar," it's about time we're able to honor his ineffable talent with five multi-colored buttons. So what's a guy like Jimi cost, Activision?

Today, Activision and Red Octane are probably strutting around their swank offices with chests held high, because we just got word that they have secured Hendrix for inclusion in Guitar Hero: World Tour.According to cbc.ca, Activision has secured the licensing rights to include two of Jimi Hendrix's songs for World Tour including "The Wind Cries Mary" and a live version of "Purple Haze" that was recorded back in 1969. Though, if those two tracks don't float your boat, Acti promises more Hendrix DLC post release. But, not only will two Hendrix tracks make the World Tour cut, but we also learn that the game will feature an in-game Hendrix avatar featuring his likeness. And so the Guitar Hero versus Rock Band battle continues ...[Via Eurogamer, Thanks Boff]

  • Rock Band controllers to work with Guitar Hero: World Tour

At Activision's non-E3 conference Tuesday, Guitar Hero director Brian Bright surprised attendees confirming that any guitar and drum controllers players own for other games on the Xbox 360 will be compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour. This news comes as quite a shock considering the current state of controller compatibility between the two music franchises -- a recent update apparently made all guitar controllers compatible with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith but we've heard of some issues. You may be asking yourself how the drums will work, considering Guitar Hero: World Tour drums use five-inputs while Rock Band uses four (see center of image above). According to Wired, Activision promises that using the Rock Band drums will cause the game to adjust the title to four inputs only. Now we wonder, will plugging in the Rock Revolution controller bring the input count to seven?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Good news, plastic rockers -- Activision announced at E3 today that its upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour game will work with Rock Band's controllers, including the drumkit, and that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith on Xbox 360 has received an update that "should" make the game compatible with Harmonix's axes. Nothing too wild on the Aerosmith tip, as the guitars should just work now (finally!), but Activision's had to do some work to make World Tour play nice: the game is designed for a five-pad drumkit, but it'll compress down to four to work with Rock Band's set. See? Friends all around. Is that so hard, guys?Read - Guitar Hero: Aerosmith updatedRead - Guitar Hero: World Tour

  • E308: Metallica DLC in Wii Guitar Hero World Tour, MIDI drums compatible

Hot Guitar Hero: World Tour news out of Activision's press conference: Metallica songs will be featured as DLC in all three versions of the game. The Wii version is one of those versions! We like hearing anything that lends credence to the idea that GH World Tour will have DLC on the Wii. Could this replace the rumored Guitar Hero: Metallica? We admit to not really understanding the next bit, but apparently the drum kit will have some kind of MIDI port for the use of any MIDI drum machine in song creation mode. That sounds pretty serious! Although anyone with a drum machine probably has methods of music creation outside of Guitar Hero.Check their liveblog transcript for lots of exciting chat about Guitar Hero!

Plastic instrument rivalry news now, with Stephen Totilo of MTV Multiplayer confirming that the upcoming Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero: World Tour will happily work with non-Guitar Hero peripherals – including those from Harmonix's first Rock Band game. The fate of Rock Band 2's instruments has yet to be decided – they haven't become available for testing just yet. We're happy to see Activision tear down this wailing wall, even though we'll have to tweak our peripheral compatibility matrix for the umpteenth time. We're not quite sure how many an "ump" is, but we're thinking it's somewhere in the region of 119.

It's not Guitar Hero: Metallica but metal fans should still be excited about today's announcement (at Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference) that their next album, Death Magnetic, will be released as a Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero World Tour the same day it launches in stores this fall. "Who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out," the boys from the band said on their official web site. The band is no stranger to rhythm games, already having tracks featured in both Rock Band and Guitar Hero III already. The band was previously reported to be in talks to premiere a single as Rock Band DLC.

Not to be outdone by the onslaught of Rock Band 2 information leaking out, Activision has officially announced a collaboration with Line 6 to integrate the Line 6 POD into the new Music Studio in Guitar Hero World Tour. The Music Studio is a feature that will allow you "record, edit and share their own rock 'n' roll anthems." No vocals though, sorry! The POD, on the other hand, basically allows the player to change guitar tones using amps, cabs and effects. You can go anywhere from acoustic to heavy metal with this baby. The official site also launched with a video explaining how all of this works -- Liam Lynch, director of Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny and Tim Mahoney of 311 tells you their experiences with the game. Lynch is particularly enthusiastic, claiming the POD "might be the most incredible object in the universe of music." You can check out all the screenshots, the video and other content here.[Via press release]

  • No music creation for Rock Band 2, says Harmonix CEO

    07.03.2008

Looks like Activision has won the latest battle in the war of the music games, as Rock Band 2 will not feature the music creation stuff that is going to be in Guitar Hero: World Tour. This was confirmed by Harmonix co-founder and CEO Alex Rigopulos in an interview with the Associated Press. "We really felt like we wanted to do it right," said Rigopulos. "We're taking a radically different approach to that problem. It's something we wanted to take more time to do it right. It's actually something we're not focused on in 'Rock Band 2.' We're really focused on other areas related to the music and bringing the community together." This is likely going to be a bummer for most of you who thought Rock Band 2 would excel over the ambitious World Tour. There's always the chance the music creation stuff in World Tour won't be fun or engaging, but we're not betting on that.

With Rock Band 2 being officially announced yesterday, we're wondering which will be the superior package for Wii fans, it or Guitar Hero: World Tour. We know World Tour is going to be an honest-to-goodness real port of the game, without any features being lost in the port to Wii. As for Rock Band 2, well, we don't know too much about features.Which one looks superior to you right now? Plan on picking up either? Not really a big fan of the genre? What say you all?
