  • See a new trailer for Halo 3's Legendary map pack

Wow, this new trailer for the Halo 3 Legendary map pack sure has us feeling nostalgic, and it's not just because two of the three maps are remakes! The trailer reminds us of the mid-autumn media frenzy that was the Halo 3 launch, with all its glitz and splendor. Those were high times for the video game blogger.Back then it was just "OMG, this is new media for Halo 3! Consume!" You didn't have to worry about what you wrote because you knew no one was reading it. Check some of those old jams out, we bet half of them are just "All work and no play makes Joystiq a dull boy" over and over again. In fact, we're feeling so nostalgic for those halcyon days that we're about to go old school and leave this post with a completely underwhelming ending. Gallery: Halo 3 DLC: Legendary Map Pack

We've all made our share of mistakes while playing Halo 3. Hitting X to drop a trip mine killing your entire squad in a Warthog instead of reloading, running into a battle without grenades or forgetting to reload before you jump into a battle situation are just a few stupid mistakes we've all made from time-to-time. Today's video just might take the cake as the worst mistake we've seen. In fact, the suicide in the video above is so ridiculous the Elite even starts to laugh as he gasps for his last breath. Set up or not, this is one of the funnier Halo 3 based suicides we've ever seen ... or heard![Via Digg]

  • Call of Duty 4 multiplayer boasts 'monstrously huge' numbers

When Infinity Ward producer, Mark Rubin, told Eurogamer that the number of online users for the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4 was "monstrously huge," we can only assume he was referring to a beast of significant size and infinite terror -- which pretty much rules out those Pokemon things. Indeed, the multiplayer monster appears to be of the house-trampling, child-eating variety, with Rubin having declared, "No other game has come close, either online current, or total unique users in a day."The battle between Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 for Xbox Live supremacy was also mentioned, with the former shooter's "between 1.2 and 1.3 million users every day" trumping Bungie's slightly more spartan servers. As for the percentage of total game owners (over seven million at last count) that have taken their tactics online, Rubin describes the number as "startling." Who knew statistics could be so scary?

  • Xbox thief thwarted by community & Live idiocy

This story is proof that karma and technology go together like chocolate syrup and vanilla ice-cream. Jesse McPherson, a 26 year-old engineer from Philadelphia, was shocked to find his Halo 3 edition Xbox 360, big-screen television and Apple G4 Powerbook stolen from his home upon returning from the recent SXSW event. After dealing with local authorities, who seemed more interested in taste-testing donuts than helping, Jesse took the matter into his own hands to solve the crime. After booting up a new Xbox 360 Jesse was shocked to find threatening messages from Xbox Live user I iRandom I claiming to be one of the perpetrators of the crime and demanded cash for the safe return of the Xbox console (coupled with ignorant NSFW language, of course!). After submitting his story to digg, which included an image of the second suspect in the theft that was taken from a local pawn shop's security monitor, Jesse was shocked to find over 7000 users had launched the event to the top of digg's main page. After a barrage of threatening messages to the admitted thief's account from random Xbox Live users and dialog with the brave thief's own mother (His mommy got involved? Ultimate bad-ass!), Jesse's Xbox 360 console was returned in working condition (the Powerbook was also returned on a separate occasion). What, you may ask, were the officers of Jesse's local precinct doing in the time he solved the crime? Who knows, but hopefully it was updating their resumes to include sloth as a major skill. • Sorry, Halo 3 Lockout remake is a hoax [Update]

    03.25.2008

Update: While the cover art was confirmed as a fake, Bungie has confirmed that the last map is Blackout - the successor to Lockout! More information can be found on the official post from Luke Smith. We feel like the guys at MythBusters today. Three myths have been busted by the trusted experts here at Fanboy Towers. This one, we're sad to say, involves the Halo 3 Lockout map remake magazine cover we reported over the weekend. The rumor was that the upcoming Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack would include a remade version of the Halo 2 map Lockout along with Avalanche (a remade Sidewinder) and Ghost Town. Regarding the Dutch magazine's cover, Bungie's Frank O'Connor and Louis Wu have confirmed the magazine is a fake and Halo.Bungie.Org user RVideo was kind enough to deconstruct the cover and compare it to actual Power Unlimited cover art. Looks like this one is busted folks, but here's something to think about - the cover has been confirmed busted but no one said anything about the last map not being Lockout! By the way, don't hold your breath folks! [Thanks, StLouisRibs7734]

Happy free Heroic Map Pack day everyone! For those with a little patience, you'll be rewarded today with Halo 3's former $10 set of maps for the cost of air (but not PerriAir; that the Spaceballs still charge for). The pack includes Standoff, Rat's Nest and Foundry. While we'd love to tell you all about these levels, we're getting our first taste of them today. With all that said, there's currently a hiccup in the system and the content – which was supposed to be free at 2AM pacific last night – is still listed for $10 on Xbox Live Marketplace. Bungie's forum has a nice thread (about to break 100 pages) on the issue and we're trying to get an answer from Major Nelson for the Microsoft angle. We'll update when the map pack actually becomes, you know ... free.Update: It's free now, go get 'em.%Gallery-10581%.

  • Halo 3's Heroic Map Pack to be free this Tuesday

    03.22.2008

While Bungie is probably hoping that everyone will get excited about their quickly approaching Legendary Map Pack, we'd wager that a larger percentage of the Halo 3-playing populous are instead anticipating the price reduction on Bungie's last expansion, the Heroic Map Pack. In their latest weekly update, Bungie announced the discount would come sooner than expected -- as of 2 a.m. this coming Tuesday, the pack will be free to download on Xbox Live Marketplace. For those living under rocks (or PS3s), that means you've got no reason not to purchase the formerly $10 set including Standoff, Rat's Nest, and the highly customizable Foundry. Unless you hate free things, or, even less likely, you never purchased Bungie's third ringworld romp.[Thanks, Sam.]

Everyone is trying to take out the Prez as he/she navigates the harsh back alley built inside of Foundry. • Next Halo 3 map pack coming April 15, includes Sidewinder remake

    03.19.2008

For the next Halo 3 batch of content (the "Legendary Map Pack") Bungie is going a bit more old-school. The pack will include "Avalanche," a spiritual remake of Halo 1's "Sidewinder." It won't be exactly the same, Bungie cautions, but its U-shape is definitely going to remind you of the old stomping grounds. If you have more questions about the addition -- and we're sure you do -- some Bungie staffers took time to answer some of them. What we also learned today was that "Avalanche," "Ghost Town" and one other mystery map will drop April 15 for 800 points. Speaking as people who like to hold on to their $10 bills, we look forward to playing them a few months after that.%Gallery-16632%

  • Bungie to release Halo 3 "Legendary Map Pack" details Tuesday

    by

    03.15.2008

Fans of Bungie's fight-finishing FPS were undoubtedly pleased to learn last month that Halo 3, though falling behind in the Xbox Live activity rankings, is in no danger of going to the cybernetically-enhanced dogs, as it were. The map-crafting wizards at Bungie are already hard at work on a new trio of downloadable arenas -- the eight-man, objective-oriented "Ghost Town" was revealed during GDC, the other two remain shrouded in mystery. However, much like fresh Milano cookies at an Oprah's Book Club meeting, mysteries on the internet don't last very long. Bungie announced in a recent weekly update that they will reveal the second leg of their DLC tripod this coming Tuesday, dropping hints in the form of four images of the vehicles that will be playable on the map. Either these rigs have suffered a vicious antiquing, or the new map will be set in a crystalline winter wonderland -- we do so hope it's accompanied by a "Spartan Snow Angel" playlist.

    03.13.2008

Major League Gaming (MLG) announced that Halo 3's Team Hardcore playlist is being rebranded as the MLG Playlist. The change will become effective in the April update and more details are to follow on what this exactly means.According to MLG, they've helped develop game types that ensure fair competition and emphasize skill. Bungie will incorporate these settings in the new playlists. MLG also states that it will produce a series called "Get Better Fast" to familiarize players with strategies and tactics used by MLG pros. At least this puts the competitive whiners men of stature in one place. Now, Bungie, can we please get a post-puberty non-racist/homophobic/dumb-trash-talk playlist?[Via X3F]

  • Gamer's erased Xbox 360 story comes to a happy close

Like they say, all's well that ends well -- and that's certainly true in the case of a gamer named Nathaniel. If you'll recall, the Xbox 360 owner had sent his very personalized console into Microsoft for repairs, making very clear that the signed and drawn-on system had great sentimental value to him... which the technicians in Redmond promptly ignored. After the console returned to him wiped clean of the aforementioned "value," it seemed like all hope was lost. Luckily, the kind souls at Bungie have taken it upon themselves to try and right the wrongs perpetrated in this case, and have mailed Nathaniel a super-ultra-mega awesome package, featuring a Legendary Edition helmet signed by most of the Bungie studio staff, the soundtrack disc signed by Martin O'Donnel, a jacket, t-shirt, limited edition wireless controllers, and much, much, much more. Hit the read link to get the full story, and check out Nathaniel's thanks to the gaming community and Bungie.[Thanks, Saad]

  • Get double XP from some Halo 3 playlists

If you've been looking for an excuse to jump back into Halo 3 after your dalliances with Call of Duty 4, this may just be it: This weekend, you'll be getting double XP points if you win a game of Grifball, a game variation created by Burnie Burns of RvB fame. The game will be a social playlist from now until March 10 at noon. Also, Grifball is being treated like a tournament hopper with prizes available. At noon on March 20 the next double XP playlist will be activated: Team SWAT, which takes away radar and shields and adds health. So, is this enough to get you back to playing Halo 3? Or did you never slack off to begin with?

  • Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 get celebrity love on Conan O' Brien

    03.01.2008

If the annual shame parade known as the Spike TV Video Game Awards have taught us anything, it's this -- famous people love video games. Take, for example, "Arrested Development" star Will Arnett and "SNL" funnyman Jason Sudeikis, both of whom outed themselves as FPSophiles last week on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien".While we were amused by Arnett's endorsement of Call of Duty 4 and his tales of domestic disrespect, we think Sudeikis pulled away with a higher chuckle per joke ratio. You can watch his entire interview after the break -- jump to 4:17 for his gaming testimonial, or to 5:48 to watch a grown man demonstrate Halo 3 teabagging in front of a live studio audience.[Thanks, Colin.]
