The start of World Cup 2010 and launch of ESPN 3D gave us plenty to talk about, and that's before we got to Sony's 3DTV and Blu-ray 3D announcements, the 152-inch plasma shipping this fall from Panasonic, and ITV HD ruining the big game for an entire nation. there's plenty of sadness to go around however, with Boxee delays, DirecTV glitches and TiVo / DISH squabbling. Microsoft's new Xbox 360, along with ESPN3 access and an upgraded Netflix interface gave us plenty to talk about -- we'll see if it's actually whisper quiet. Say hello to the most special of guests this week -- our own Steve Kim! That's right, with a full complement of EHD podcasters we kick things off with plenty of Apple talk, including the other Steve's comments on set-top boxes, and the debut of the iPhone 4. After that we take a look at Redbox's Blu-ray rates and what's going on with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Amazon Gold Box deals on HD stuff this week are reason to be excited -- or afraid, before we close things out with the Sonic/DivX acquisition, this week's Ask Engadget HD and the latest promo from DirecTV and DISH Network. No guests this week, but plenty of HD topics like our favorite HD sources, Apple's latest play in the living room, and Summer HD programming. We of course talk a little 3D including DirecTV's 3D preparations and ESPN 3D's expectations. TiVo seems to be the company we love to hate so we scratch our head trying to think of why Best Buy would want a TiVo interface on a TV and not a DVR. Finally we talk a little HD 101 and overscan and what might happen to our TVs if congress changes the telecom laws.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh (@bjdraw), Richard Lawler (@Rjcc)Producer: Trent WolbeProgram 00:10:15 - The next Apple TV revealed: cloud storage and iPhone OS on tap... and a $99 price tag00:21:27 - Poll: What's your primary source of HD?00:26:48 - Survey says pay TV customer service is at new heights00:33:20 - Summer HDTV suggestions00:48:21 - DirecTV rolls out 3D upgrade for newer set-tops, older ones left in the cold00:53:00 - ESPN sees 3D penetration surpassing DVRs by 201900:55:37 - Poll: Do you think Avatar will ship on Blu-ray 3D this year?00:59:25 - Best Buy to include TiVo's software -- but no DVR -- in Insignia HDTVs01:03:14 - SED's dead, baby: Canon abandons development of new HDTVs, we take a look back01:06:44 - HD 101: Overscan and why all TVs do it01:13:49 - Congress investigating general revamp of telecommunications lawLISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)LISTEN (OGG)

After finally seeing the Google TV we take some time to talk about the future of connected HDTVs, and we've brought in industry veteran Jeremy Toeman and Engadget editor Ross Miller to figure out what the future may hold. Once we get through all the Google talk, there's still plenty of news including the truth about HDTV specs and testing, a new version of SageTV and good & bad news for some Comcast subscribers. Then it's on to the potential of holographic broadcasts in just 12 years and the first 3D blu-ray announced for retail in the U.S. If you prefer your movies digitally, we're trying to figure out the potential of $30 early releases, before moving on to the latest Watch Instantly update and Best Buy's new VOD outlet. HTPC talk brings things home with the bad news of another Ceton delay and a look at Elgato's new HD PVR for Macs, but don't forget to check out part 2 of the podcast in #195 -- it's all about Lost.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh (@bjdraw), Richard Lawler (@Rjcc)Special Guests: Jeremy Toeman (@JToeman) & Ross Miller (@ohnorosco)Producer: Trent WolbeProgram 00:02:08 - Google I/O recap: more web than you can shake a frozen dessert at00:13:34 - Editorial: Engadget on Google TV00:38:00 - Logitech's Google TV companion box includes smartphone apps, we go eyes-on (updated: video!)00:41:58 - Google TV: Who is the competition and what are they saying about it?00:47:05 - HDTV tests pit fantasy land specs against real world performance -- guess what happens00:54:18 - SageTV 7 due to arrive tomorrow with new look00:56:14 - Comcast Cisco/SA markets are finally getting the iGuide00:59:22 - Japan proposes holographic 3D broadcasts for 2022 World Cup01:03:00 - Having problems seeing 3D? If you hate 3D talk then great news as we only have one 3D topic on this week's show and it's about how Roger Ebert hates 3D too. Luckily we don't spend too much time on it, and move on to fun things like Windows 7 Media Center and the fact that it is now available on Embedded devices. On that same note we talk about what Google TV might be about and what changes the FCC might make to the CableCARD rules, and the introduction of AllVid. After that it's all stats, surveys, polls and opinions as we run down the latest on the Avatar vs The Dark Knight sales contest, Nielsen says people with HDTVs can finally watch HD and discuss if 1080p is enough resolution for everything.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune]Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh, Richard LawlerProducer: Trent WolbeProgram00:07:35 - Roger Ebert gives 3D thumbs down, shocking headlines two thumbs up00:15:07 - Windows 7 Media Center coming to embedded devices00:20:00 - Is this the first Windows 7 Media Center embedded set-top box?00:31:10 - Google, Sony, Intel & Logitech's TV project to be unveiled next month as Dragonpoint?00:37:25 - CableCARD or AllVid, software choice is the key to innovation00:44:42 - Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray player review00:50:48 - Poll: Did Avatar work in your Blu-ray player?00:55:50 - The Dark Knight isn't ready to surrender its all-time Blu-ray sales crown yet00:59:38 - Nielsen finds 53% of homes have HDTVs, but only 46% can receive an HD signal01:04:00 - 1 in 8 say they will cut back on cable bills -- but probably won't01:10:00 - Is 1080p enough resolution for everything?LISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)LISTEN (OGG)

Oh TiVo, we just want to love you so much but we had a feeling that the Premier wouldn't live up to our expectations and we spend the beginning part of this show talking about how low you can go. We do get over it eventually and move on to bigger and better things like ESPN 3D which is now officially going to launch on DirecTV in June. That should mark the beginning of the 3D era despite the recent 3D hockey on MSG. Finally we round things out with some talk of lip sync resolutions.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune]Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh, Richard LawlerProducer: Trent WolbeProgram03:37 - TiVo Premiere review14:38 - TiVo Premiere now on sale, will you pick one up?16:25 - Warner / Blockbuster deal keeps movies out of kiosks for a month20:04 - AT&T's mobile U-verse getting upgraded: download your recordings on the go22:46 - Verizon shelves plans for future FiOS rollouts, relocations to Massachusetts set to boom25:48 - DirecTV will have ESPN 3D at launch, next to its own N3D channel28:52 - 3D hockey nets positive reviews, biggest surprise of the night was a Rangers win31:16 - New glasses-free 3D tech uses per pixel prisms for zero crosstalk, audience flexibility39:12 - Ask Engadget HD: How to fix lip sync issues?LISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)LISTEN (OGG)

Ever since we first heard of the RVU Alliance we've been excited about the technology and about the supporting members. At the time we didn't give much thought to the companies that we've never heard of that actually implement the technology, but when David Bye from Jethead reached out to us concerning a story, we just had to invite him on the show. David brought the head geek, Ben Payne, with him and for an hour we go on about RVU's abilities, shortcomings and possible implementations.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune]Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben DrawbaughGuests: Ben Payne VP Engineering and David Bye VP Marketing & Business Development of Jethead DevelopmentProducer: Trent WolbeProgram RVU Alliance gets Motorola, Pace, Thomson and others to dream the multiroom dream LISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)LISTEN (OGG)

After our Lost discussion last week, we're right back at it with Avatar Blu-ray & DVD release news to open this week's show. That's just the start for 3D news, with new content and providers popping up almost daily, but how much will it all cost? After that we dig into the latest updated on Netflix streaming for the PC and why we're not worried about ICT. After that there's cable news with compression, CableCARD and TiVo before some healthy unfounded speculation about what Google can do to the set-top box market. Finally we figure out if people really do love NBC's Olympics tape-delay and who is (or is not) watching Life on discovery, and why. Sometimes it feels like all we do is talk about what's coming, but not today, as we get to actually talk about what is here -- for a change. First on the list is 3DTVs from Panasonic and Samsung and how the two compare. Then we move on to some exciting new 3D content like The Final Four and The Masters. Then we talk Media Center and about our initial impressions of the Ceton InfiniTV 4, at which point Jeremy Hammer joins in the fun to fill in the details. He even sticks around to explain what DMIPS are when we talk about the TiVo Premier processor, and his thoughts on exclusive programming deals; and finally Ben's favorite show Lost.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune]Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh, Richard LawlerGuest: Jeremey Hammer of Ceton CorpProducer: Trent WolbeProgram00:01:15 - Comments from Podcast 18200:05:03 - Panasonic 3D home entertainment system goes on sale to a country in mourning00:10:57 - Samsung's 2010 3DTVs priced from $1,700 to ridiculous and everywhere in between00:15:27 - First 3D showdown pits Samsung vs Panasonic00:18:43 - Poll: Will you still buy home theater equipment that isn't 3D-ready?00:23:09 - CBS Sports to present the Final Four in 100 3D theaters00:25:57 - Comcast will beat DirecTV to the punch by broadcasting the Masters Tournament in 3D April 7-1100:28:50 - Netflix prototyped for Windows Phone 7 Series00:30:56 - Sony signs up all six major studios for HD movies on PlayStation Network00:36:08 - Ceton's quad CableCARD tuner for Media Center available for pre-order00:14:42 - The processor in the TiVo Premiere is over twice as fast as the Series301:26:54 - Court rules against Comcast, Cablevision on new FCC program access rulesLISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)LISTEN (OGG)

3DTVs get their big launch at Best Buy this week, but we kick off with talk of TiVo's latest legal victory. We do talk 3D for some time though and can't wait to see if the in store demos live up to what we saw at CES -- we also take some time to try to clear up some confusion in regards to HDMI, 3D and all the requirements and standards. Finally we talk about why an IR emitter for a iPhone is a bad idea, why we don't really care much about Real's loss to the MPAA and why you should wait for the BBC's version of Life on Blu-ray rather than watching it on Discovery.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune]Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh, Richard LawlerProducer: Trent WolbeProgram03:10 - Comments from Podcast 18109:00 - TiVo's $200m damages award in EchoStar case affirmed, EchoStar to appeal (again)15:58 - Panasonic's VT25 3DTVs will be nearly 50% off Japanese prices, launch this week at Best Buy21:50 - Panasonic G20 HDTV review shows plasma's still got it23:37 - Samsung debuts 3DTV LED LCD ads during the Oscars28:03 - HDMI 1.4a spec released in full, lays down mandatory 3D format support details39:27 - New Potato's FLPR IR dongle gives your iPhone home automation capabilities40:00 - RedEye mini converts iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into IR-beaming universal remote47:73 - RealNetworks to stop selling RealDVD, your copyrights are safe -- for now54:44 - Discovery's next epic series Life airs March 21 on seven networks, June 1 on Blu-rayLISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)LISTEN (OGG)

A new TiVo isn't something that happens everyday -- in fact the last time was almost three years ago -- and because so many love and hate their TiVo at the exact same time, these same people get very passionate about the changes they expect. This is a task we weren't willing to take on our own, so we invited Engadget Classic Editors Nilay and Paul (one is a die hard TiVo user and the other actually went to the event) and just for a little outside perspective, we also had TiVo expert Dave Zatz. Who's been following the company as long as anyone we know. We went a little long and deviated off topic into the land of Media Center a few times, but overall there is some podcast gold in here -- if we can say so ourselves.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune]Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh, Richard LawlerGuests: Nilay Patel, Paul Miller and Dave ZatzProducer: Trent WolbeProgram00:02:05 - TiVo Premiere and Premiere XL usher in a brand new interface, optional QWERTY remote00:23:15 - TiVo Premiere hands-on (update: video!) 00:47:00 - Oops: TiVo Premiere won't have Comcast On Demand01:33:10 - Poll: So what's your reaction to the TiVo Premiere? Although we had fun getting a new perspective from a third voice last week, its good to be back to our regular show as we try to predict what TiVo is going to announce tonight. Next up is the latest preview of the FCC's plan to bring broadband to everyone -- with a little help from the TV spectrum. Meanwhile some can't wait to get HDMI on the Mac Mini, while others couldn't care less. And we still love some 3D, but don't like the $150 price point on the glasses. Finally we talk the Olympics, Avner from Boxee on the Engadget Show and Cablevision's new PC to TV Media Relay.Get the podcast[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (MP3).[RSS - AAC] Enhanced feed, subscribe to this with iTunes.[RSS - MP3] Add the Engadget HD Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator[Zune]Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace[MP3] Download the show (MP3).Hosts: Ben Drawbaugh, Richard LawlerProducer: Trent WolbeProgram01:26 - TiVo Premiere, XL DVRs show up in Best Buy systems for $299, $499; due March 2707:40 - FCC's Genachowski previews broadband plan, demands half gigahertz of spectrum for the task13:44 - Broadcasters may have to pay extra for the right to deliver Mobile DTV20:10 - Apple rumored to be readying Mac mini with HDMI30:24 - Samsung's new 3DTVs get an early eyes-on, through $150 shutter glasses36:27 - Samsung's first Full HD 3D TV now available in the US, all 55 inches of it37:55 - Sony Style stores proclaimed 3D ready, are you?40:34 - NBC turns off the tape delay, will air Men's Hockey final live in all time zones Sunday52:34 - The Engadget Show - 00657:50 - Cablevision's new 'PC to TV Media Relay' slings PC media to your cable box, fuzzy on the details LISTEN (MP3)LISTEN (AAC)LISTEN (OGG)
