HD DVD had quite a run there for the past three weeks, but now it's over as Blu-ray has an impressive list of new releases and catalog titles. The biggest title this week is easily No Country for Old Men, with its impressive 8.5 IMDB score, and sweeping the Academy Awards a few weeks ago taking just about everything including Best Picture. From our perspective this is one of the best weeks for catalog titles Blu-ray has had in some time, with classics like Gattaca, Dogma and Independence Day. But HD DVD fans do get a good catalog title this week as well, as the hilarious Fletch is released from Universal. This is Universal's second to last title, with Atonement coming out next week. HD DVD was supposed to also get the Bee Movie today, but we know how Dreamworks rolls. Warner, who is the exact opposite continues its red-delay, but like we saw in last week's Nielsen numbers, not many are rewarding Warner for its dedication. We'll have to wait until the Friday after next to see how this slate does, but we'd bet it'll break all the records as Blu might get it's first +90 percent share. HD DVD 407 vs Blu-ray 471*Blu-ray Appleseed Ex Machina (Warner) August Rush (Warner) Dan in Real Life (Walt Disney) Dogma (Sony) Gattaca (Sony) Hitman (Fox) I, Robot (Fox) Independence Day (Fox) No Country for Old Men (Walt Disney) Sleuth (2007) (Sony) HD DVD Fletch (Universal) In the Valley of Elah (Warner) Michael Clayton (Warner) * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously officially available.

Despite HD DVD imminent demise, things are going pretty good. For the third week in a row the Red camp has the hottest title of the week; Into The Wild (IMDB 8.3). But considering this is Paramount's last week, and there is only one remaining exclusive new release left (Atonement 3/18/08), we're getting closer to the end of the road. The biggest title for Blu-ray this week is Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, but the biggest news is Disney's non-release of 101 Dalmatians. Disney did promise to take a classic out of the vault for Blu-ray this year, evidently just not this one. With only 31 titles left on the calendar for HD DVD, it appears the count will end at 435, but only 15 of those titles are from studios you've heard of and only two are HD DVD exclusives from Universal. The rest are Warner titles which will be delayed three weeks after the Blu version, and we'd be willing to bet they won't be hot sellers. HD DVD 404 vs Blu-ray 461*Blu-ray Ice Age (Fox) Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (Fox) The Rookie (2002) (Walt Disney) HD DVD Aquarium Impressions (Navarre Corporation) Fireplace Impressions (Navarre Corporation) Into the Wild (Paramount) Mystic Forests (Navarre Corporation) No Reservations (Warner) Things We Lost in the Fire (DreamWorks) * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously officially available.

How very fitting that about the exact same time Toshiba calls it quits, HD DVD has its last two blockbuster exclusives two weeks in a row -- no we don't count the Bee Movie. Also, odd this week is that HD DVD has more titles released as well. Meanwhile, Blu-ray doesn't have much more than yet another vampire movie and a few other interesting titles that we've never heard of. Of course the nine HD DVDs this week aren't much to talk about for the most part either. Looking forward, there are only 37 titles left on the calendar for HD DVD and we'll be interested to see if this number goes up or down. We suspect these will be the last, but we can see where some might get the axe depending on how far along in the production cycle the titles are. Now that February is over, we look forward to March which has a decent selection of new releases and catalog titles. HD DVD 398 vs Blu-ray 458*Blu-ray 30 Days of Night (Sony) Initial D (Tai Seng) Justice League: The New Frontier (Warner) Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same (Warner) Over America In High Definition (Topics) Over California In High Definition (Topics) To Kill a King (Starz) HD DVD The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Warner) Beowulf (2007) (Paramount) The Brave One (Warner) Cecilia & Bryn At Glyndebourne (Opus Arte) Dragon Tiger Gate (Tai Seng) Freedom: 1-3 Giftset (Bandai Visual) Freedom: 4 (Bandai Visual) Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 2 Resurrection (EuroArts) Rain in the Mountains (Vanguard Cinema) * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously officially available.

So it seems that our favorite battle between Red and Blu is all but over, as long as titles are released for each format we'll be here to sum 'em up for you. And of all the weeks for HD DVD to fall like a house of cards, what an interesting one for it to happen, with one of the two remaining hot exclusives for HD DVD hitting the shelves. The number one movie this week is easily Universal's American Gangster with a stifling IMDB score of 8.2 placing it in the IMDB top 250 at number 166 -- that's the first time a movie was released on either format while making the list. Meanwhile on Blu-ray, Warner brings Michael Clayton which is no slump and will be available on HD DVD in about three weeks also. Finally, Warner catches up a title on Red (officially) with The Invasion, but based on how poorly it sold on Blu, we're not expecting it to make much of a dent in the Nielsen numbers. Looking ahead to next week, HD DVD's remaining hot exclusive on the calendar hits the street as Beowulf and while IMDB didn't think much of it, overall we expect it to be a hot commodity for Red. HD DVD 389 vs Blu-ray 451*Blu-ray Deep Purple: Live at Montreux 2006 (Eagle Rock) In the Valley of Elah (Warner) Michael Clayton (Warner) Night of the Werewolf/Vengeance of the Zombies (BCI) Run Lola Run (Sony) Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (Eagle Rock) Yes: Live at Montreux 2003 (Eagle Rock) HD DVD American Gangster (Universal) Galaxina (BCI) The Invasion (Warner) * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously available.

It's the second week of February as Blu-ray continues to pour out another seven titles that helps the Blu camp on its way to 29 for the month. Meanwhile the red camp has two movies on its way to 17 for the month, of which only seven are from studios you've heard of. Sure we've heard of Girls Gone Wild, but it's hardly what we'd call a hot popular title. So while red waits for American Gangster next week the Blu camp gets the latest Marky Mark crime drama, We Own the Night. The other three mentionable titles for Blu this week are from Disney and Warner and while nothing really exciting here, the latest Ben Affleck move Gone Baby Gone has a IMDB rating of 8.0. Although we have no doubt that Blu-ray movies will outsell HD DVD this week, we do wonder what the split will be. On one hand HD DVD has slowly regained lost ground to Blu the past few weeks, but on the other with only two mentionable exclusives on the calendar this year -- so far -- it would take one heck of a sale to continue to make up the difference. HD DVD 386 vs Blu-ray 444*Blu-ray The Amateurs (First Look) Becoming Jane (Buena Vista) Gone Baby Gone (Buena Vista) No Reservations (Warner) Over America In High Definition (Topics) Over California In High Definition (Topics) We Own the Night (Sony) HD DVD The Amateurs (First Look) Girls Gone Wild: Baby Bash - Live And Uncensored (Mantra) * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously available.

When you look at the lineup this week, don't be too quick to passover these titles. While nothing in the lineup really jumps out at us, we were very surprised to see how highly rated some of 'em were on IMDB, including the biggest title of the week, The Assassination of Jesse James, with a crazy score of 8.0. If none of the new releases are up your alley, then there is sure to be a catalog title for you, seriously, who doesn't like Wall Street? The red fans will have to be content with Elizabeth: The Golden Age this week, but it should hold them over as two big titles are coming down the pipe later this month. After looking at the lineup for both camps this week, we have no doubt that the VideoScan results will be a landslide again, but it will be very interesting to see how red does when American Gangster and Beowulf hit the shelves in a few weeks. HD DVD 384 vs Blu-ray 437*Blu-ray Deadliest Catch: Season 3 (Discovery Channel) Across the Universe (Sony) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Warner) The Brave One (Warner) Breaker Morant (Image) Celine Dion: A New Day... And so it begins this week, as Warner's first title to be affected by the three week delay for HD DVD is released for Blu-ray. Meanwhile HD DVD fans will have to wait until February 19th to check it out. But that isn't the only thing that is in three weeks, as the first decent title for the red camp also comes out that day in the way of American Gangster. But the bad news for red doesn't end there this week because there are only three titles and we can't say we've ever heard of any of them. Of course this isn't that surprising considering HD DVD's ace in the hole Universal and Paramount are on the bench for the third week in a row. At the same time Blu-ray's lineup isn't anything to call home about either, but at least it includes a day and date in Invasion and Daddy Day Camp -- yeah, we're not excited either. Probably the most interesting title this week is the cult comedy classic Mony Python's Life of Brian, which includes both a TrueHD and LPCM sound track, that the reviewers say doesn't really sound any better -- but at least the video quality delivers. Looking ahead to next week, there isn't much to get excited about either, but at least Universal has a title for red. HD DVD 381 vs Blu-ray 427*Blu-ray Daddy Day Camp (Sony) Damages: The Complete First Season (Sony) Dispatch: Zimbabwe - Live at Madison Square Garden (Warner Music Group) The Invasion (Warner) Justin Timberlake: Live at Madison Square Garden (Sony BMG) King of California (First Look) Monty Python's Life of Brian (Sony) HD DVD Dispatch: Zimbabwe - Live at Madison Square Garden (Warner Music Group) King of California (First Look) Strauss: Die Fledermaus (Opus Arte) * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously available.

The slow new releases continue for both camps, but both camps have the same number of titles this week, two. But while Blu-ray has movies from Disney and Lionsgate respectively, the red camp gets one from Vanguard Cinema and one from Music Distribution. The one ting in common for both camps is that there isn't anything to get excited about. That being said, with this lineup from Blu-ray we'd expect about the same sales share for HD DVD as it had last week. Looking ahead, this trend looks like it'll continue and if HD DVD's lineup doesn't improve -- unless of course Universal and Paramount step up soon -- we don't see this being much of a war. But of course we said the same thing about this time last year and we couldn't have been more wrong. HD DVD 378 vs Blu-ray 420*Blu-ray The Game Plan (Walt Disney) Saw IV (Lionsgate) HD DVD Channels (Vanguard Cinema) Method Man: Live from the Sunset Strip (Music Distribution) * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously available.

Here we are the first week after CES and there isn't much on the release schedule for either camp. Blu-ray does have six titles this week, but nothing really to get excited about. Comedies do pretty good, -- even though some think HD doesn't make them any more pleasurable -- so Blu-ray fans can look forward to Dane's latest comedy Good Luck Chuck. Looking forward, this is a slow time of year for movie releases, but horror fans can look for SAW IV. And to those who think Universal and Paramount are going to be HD DVD's savior, you might want to look at the upcoming release schedule where there are a combined five titles between both studios for 2008 currently on the schedule. To be fair we saw the same thing last year, before Universal released the torrents of their catalog. HD DVD 376 vs Blu-ray 418*Blu-ray Breaker Morant (Image) Girls Gone Wild: Baby Bash - Live And Uncensored (Mantra) Good Luck Chuck (Lionsgate) Mr. Woodcock (New Line) Suburban Girl (Image) Went To Coney Island On A Mission From God... Although we are running non-stop 24 hours a day with CES coverage, the new titles roll on. While some think the format war is over, the fat lady hasn't sung just yet and this week we have a slew of titles for both camps. Blu-ray has the day and date 3:10 to Yuma as well as some catalog titles like Con Air and Man on Fire. Universal is pulling the weight in the red camp -- we have a feeling this will be the trend from now on -- with four catalog titles and Paramount brings us Zodiac: Director's Cut. Overall January is a slow month for release and with so few titles released at CES this year, we are left wondering what titles are coming down the pipe to help each camp reach their 2008 goals.. HD DVD 375 vs Blu-ray 412*Blu-ray 3:10 to Yuma (2007) (Lionsgate) Con Air (Buena Vista) Dragon Wars (Sony) Killing Machine/Shogun's Ninja (BCI) Man on Fire (Fox) Night of the Werewolf/Vengeance of the Zombies (BCI) The Rock (Buena Vista) Sister Street Fighter/Sister Street Fighter 2 (BCI) Sunshine (Fox) HD DVD Mobsters (Universal) The Pianist (Universal) White Noise (Universal) White Noise 2: The Light (Universal) Zodiac: Director's Cut (Paramount) * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously available.

Blu-ray rings in the new year with a couple of Profile 1.1 titles, it's just too bad that only PS3 and Panasonic BD30 owners can actually enjoy it. Although a few firmware updates are imminent that will allow others to enjoy them. In the meantime, everyone can enjoy the five new titles for Blu-ray this week, while HD DVD fans are left looking in the window to next week. Blu-ray wasn't able to hit 400 titles by our count before the end of 2007, but they did get in before CES -- which starts in less than one week. Resident Evil: Extinction is the biggest title, with Shoot 'Em Up coming in a close second, which at the same time is another example of why region coding can be a good thing for Blu-ray. Looking forward to next week, nothing really sticks out at us, but since we'll all be at CES covering all the press events for you in real time, it's not like we'll have time to watch anything anyways. HD DVD 370 vs Blu-ray 403*Blu-ray Shoot 'Em Up (New Line) War (Lionsgate) Resident Evil (Sony) Resident Evil Trilogy (Sony) Resident Evil: Extinction (Sony) HD DVD Nada * Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously available.

The holidays always get us out of whack, not only are movies released on two different days, but the post is in the middle of the week. Either way, there aren't that many titles, but all those with a new HD DVD player for Christmas yesterday will be happy to enjoy the biggest title this week; The Kingdom. Meanwhile, new Blu-ray fans can laugh in HD at the latest installment of Rush Hour -- while red has to wait to see it, presumably due to the lack of region coding on HD DVD. This competes the list for HD DVD going into CES, but blu has a few more next week, as they push the first profile 1.1 title to just before the big show. As we finish up the run to Christmas, Blu-ray once again has the biggest title this week in the way of The Simpons Movie, which HighDefDigest gave a PQ rating of five out of five stating, "I was continually surprised at how three-dimensional it all looks" but says that Ratatouille remains the "greatest animated movie yet to hit high-def." This week brings them one step closer to 400, but they won't get there before the end of the year. Warner brings Blade Runner to both camps and their latest blu catchup title, Terminator 3. HD DVD has a few exclusives including Balls of Fury and Stardust, while Disney has Underdog for blu. Fox continues to waiver on it's support for Blu-ray by not bringing the hit musical, Once to Blu-ray day and date with DVD this week. With the run to Christmas over, we'll turn our attention to CES, which is only a few weeks away, and we're sure will turn out to be very interesting. This is the week that we've been waiting for. No, it's not because we just love Harry, it's because we can't wait to see how the red version of Harry sells against the blu. Why? Because, the HD DVD edition isn't free (like 300) and with all the stand-alone HD DVD players to hit the street recently, we think it's got the best chance yet of out selling blu. But Harry isn't the only big title this week, as Blu-ray has High School Musical 2 and Lost: The complete Third Season. Meanwhile, HD DVD has a huge title in the way of The Bourne Ultimatum. December doesn't have many more blockbuster titles, but there are a few in the coming weeks including the Simpsons Movie, as well as Rush Hour 3. Blu-ray picks up where it left off a few weeks ago on its way to 400 titles by the end of the year with a mix of releases. The first comedy for the blu camp in some time, is Superbad, and the biggest title of the week is long awaited day and date release of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Fox, on the other hand continues to waiver, not only did they drop Independence Day from the release list this week, but for whatever reason they decided not to bring the sixth season of 24 to Blu-ray despite releasing it on DVD. HD DVD has two exclusives this week, first up is the documentary, Arctic Tale and the first season of the very popular Battlestar Galactica. While we can't wait to see how well these titles sell, next week is the big week when the Harry Potter series hits both formats at the same time as the latest installment of Borne and High School Musical. We had a hard time coming up with the number one title this week, in fact it's been a long time since we had a line up this pathetic. The other thing that's new this week is that for the first time in over two months HD DVD has more titles than Blu-ray, and for the first time in a month, Blu-ray has less than ten titles. Regardless, unless you're into Japanimation or old Charlton Heston movies, the only mentionable titles are for HD DVD in the way of comedies. Sure, not everyone agrees that comedies deserve the HD treatment, but we do, and we can't wait to check out one of our all time favorites from Paramount this week; Old School. HD DVD also has a few day and date comedies as well with Mr Bean's Holiday and Hot Rod. We are going to appreciate next week even more after this, while we wait for some solid catalog titles from Fox as well as the latest installment of Pirates from Disney. And at the same time the red camp can look forward to the first season of Battlestar. While at the same time, New Line has their first temporary Blu-ray exclusive in the way of Hairspary, thanks to the lack of region coding on HD DVD. The HD DVD camp has the long awaited Star Trek: The Original Series -- The Complete First Season, which is sure to be on quite a few people's Christmas list. These pretty much wrap up November, as we look forward to more than a couple blockbusters scheduled for December, including the latest installment of Pirates and the entire kid wizard collection. Continuing the trend, Blu-ray extends its newly gained lead on HD DVD thanks to the help of some titles that we'd rather not count. Regardless, there are a few nice exclusives this week for both camps, as Sony brings Steven Spielberg's classic Close encounters of the Third Kind and Fox releases the first season of the hit TV show, Prison Break. HD DVD has a couple of exclusives this week too in the way of Universal's Pride and Prejudice, and the red camp's biggest exclusive this week, Shrek the Third. Disney finally steps up and really gets in the HD movie game this week with not only two of their biggest recent movies, but also a few nice box sets. Warner keeps supporting both sides -- for now -- with one of our favorites, The Aviator. Universal has another popular comedy this week, that's of course a HD DVD exclusive with I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. As you'd expect, November looks to be a great month for both formats and while Blu-ray fans look forward to the Die Hard franchise, HD DVD fans get Star Trek and Shrek The Third, and Warner is scheduled to bring the Ocean's movies to both formats. This title counting business is a mess, between titles showing up without dates, studios switching sides and ceasing the production of titles, and now titles that feature nothing more than a fireplace or an aquarium, we're not sure what to count. But a title is a title, and Blu-ray has thirteen this week -- who knew that DVD International would have such an impact on the format war. What's bigger news than Blu-ray retaking the lead is, the release of Spider-Man 3 -- with or without the trilogy box set -- while we doubt it'll be as big as Transformers, the Blu-ray camp has high expectations. Warner finally brings The Polar Express to Blu-ray and has License to Wed for both sides.
