After showing off its latest mobile processor and a smart speaker-router hybrid that looks just like the Google Home, Huawei left its IFA audience with one more little nugget to chew upon. CEO Richard Yu announced that its upcoming Mate 20 flagship will be unveiled in London on October 16 and sport the just-unveiled Kirin 980 chipset.

Let's face it: The AI hype train isn't going away, and soon all our devices will be run by artificial intelligence. While Apple's answer to the AI takeover is to just call its new A11 processor "Bionic," Huawei has taken a more concrete approach. The company embedded a neural processing unit (NPU) on its Kirin 970 chip, which it claims can run AI tasks faster and with less power than others. The newly launched Mate 10 Pro is the first phone to use the Kirin 970, and it's meant to demonstrate the wonders of deeply embedded AI. So far though, it's a capable, well-designed phone that has yet to fully explore what a dedicated NPU can do.

The most important phones of the year have already been announced, but one company might still be able to pique our interest. Huawei unveiled its AI-focused Kirin 970 processor at IFA, saying the chip's real world benefits would be shared at the launch of its next flagship. Now, the company is ready to reveal how the Kirin 970 performs in a phone. The Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro were designed around AI -- so much so that Huawei wants to call them "intelligent machines." Huawei told Engadget to expect the prices to be competitive, and in Europe at least, prices start at €699 for the standard model, while the Mate 10 Pro will come in at €799. From my brief time with some preview units at a recent demo in New York, the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro certainly have useful AI features and could be worthy competitors to the latest phones from Apple, Google and Samsung.
