GammaTech rugged T7Q launches at $2k and up, promptly steals your iPad's lunch money
For people out there doing actual work (like tech blogging, for instance), there's the need for a tablet like the GammaTech T7Q Windows slate, starting at $2,000. Standing out like an M9 tank among the daily driver tabs, the sealed magnesium unit meets military specs for environmental nasties -- while packing a 7-inch resistive-touch TFT WSVGA LCD, Intel Atom N2600 or N2800 processor, 5MP camera with geotagging, compass, gyroscope and an mSATA SSD. It can also be accessorized to the nines with items like RFID, magnetic stripe readers and GPS through an assortment of connectors and expansion slots. To top it off, there's three different lock-down methods for your your data: TPM1.2 security, built-in BIOS safeguards and a Kensington lock connector -- plus Computracing ability piled on, for good measure. Sure, this guy is intended for oil rigs and desert archaeological digs, but hauling one out at Starbucks might give you a whole new level of shabby-chic cred -- if you've got the cash.
Lenovo's IdeaPad S200 / S206 netbook gives a choice of Intel and AMD innards, arrives in June for $349 and up
While we don't expect to see that many netbooks announced in two thousand twelve, we're not surprised to see some of the usual suspects releasing a few token models. Lenovo just introduced the IdeaPad S200 and S206 -- the same 11.6-inch mini, essentially, except the S200 comes with an Intel Atom N2800 Cedar Trail CPU, while the S206 packs an AMD C60 dual-core chip. Either way, this 2.9-pound laptop has 2GB of RAM, USB 2.0 and 3.0, HDMI, an SD / MMC reader and a two-cell battery promising a relatively modest four-plus hours of juice. Both can be configured with a 500GB hard drive as fast as 7,200RPM, though for whatever reason the Intel model in particular is also offered with a 32GB SSD. Whichever chip maker ends up winning your dollar, you'll have to wait until June, when the two are expected to go on sale for $349 and up. Sean Cooper contributed to this post
Not so ultimate Ultrabook: MacBook Air KIRF features mini-HDMI port, 3.5 hour battery life
Hey, who wiped the MacBook Air logo off? Nah, we're kidding -- it's a KIRF. Sure, Apple's svelte 13-incher may have a duo of USB ports and an SD card slot, but this rig adds in a 3-in-1 card reader and an odd, combo RJ45 / VGA jack (which we assume needs an adapter). For good measure, you'll also find a mini-HDMI output, although, with 3.5 hours of battery life it may prove problematic for getting through a 1080p movie marathon without nearby power. The alloy-encased lappy has a 1.86GHz Intel Atom N2800 CPU with a GMA3600 integrated GPU, 2GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and a 13.3-inch LED display sporting a ho-hum resolution (for a 13-incher) of 1366 x 768, just like the 11-inch MacBook Air. Amazingly, this knock-off weighs merely .01 kilograms more than its real counterpart at 1.36 kgs (about three pounds), while being only 0.1 cm thicker. Giz-China expects this Ultrabook-wannabe by Shenzhen Technology Ltd to land on Chinese shelves sometime in November for about $471. Cue Apple's lawyers in 3... 2...
