North Korea blames the US for internet outages following Sony hacks
It may appear we've reached a climax in the Sony Pictures hack saga - what with The Interview finally seeing a theatrical release - but the international finger pointing is alive and well. Today, North Korea's National Defense Commission is accusing the US of causing nation-wide internet outages, while likening the government to a snot-nosed child playing games. According to Reuters, a statement from the Commission carried by the country's official news agency KCNA reads: The United States, with its large physical size and oblivious to the shame of playing hide and seek as children with runny noses would, has begun disrupting the Internet operations of the main media outlets of our republic.
Time-lapse map shows internet outages as Hurricane Sandy makes landfall (video)
It's no secret that Hurricane Sandy has worked a number on communications infrastructure, but now a time-lapse video created by Renesys gives us a clearer picture of when and where internet outages occurred as the storm made landfall. Green squares on the map above indicate that 99.95 percent of networks in the area are reachable, while red squares denote that more than five percent of networks are down. In Manhattan's case, Renesys estimates that there was only a ten percent failure, which it considers impressive since power was cut to much of the island. Ten percent may not sound like a huge outage, but the firm points out that population density makes it equivalent to taking a country the size of Austria off the grid. As for the 90 percent of networks in the borough that stayed online, they survived thanks to generator power. Syrian internet knocked out as protests fill the streets (video)
The Washington Post is reporting a massive internet outage across Syria today, a fact confirmed by government-backed outlet Syria-News.com. Internet traffic monitoring group Renesys began noting the outage at 7:00AM eastern time, with two-thirds of networks in the country affected -- half an hour later, 49 out of 50 networks in Syria were hit. The outage struck the nation as some 50,000 protesters took to the streets as part of a "Children's Friday" protest, drawing attention to the death of dozens of children in prior protests and calling for the resignation of the country's president, Bashar al-Assad. The timing has led many to speculate that the government itself is behind the shutdown, seemingly echoing recent outages in Egypt and Libya -- and Syria's long history of monitoring internet activity on sites like Facebook and YouTube certainly seems to lend credence to that claim.
