Remember the mysterious reference to iProd 2,1 that appeared in the iPad's code? We thought it might be a new CDMA or camera-equipped iPad, but it just might have been the new iOS-based Apple TV instead. Diving through the iOS 4.2 beta, a TUAW tipster allegedly uncovered the above key, which hints that we might have been right about the device's app potential all along. Though Apple may rely on a simpler media streaming UI for the home theater to enhance accessibility and ease of use, there's always the chance the community might jailbreak the $99 set-top box to do far greater things. While you wait with bated breath for confirmation of this wondrous possibility, why not check out our Apple TV hands-on?

Honestly, from this distance it's hard to tell what's going on, but 9 to 5 Mac says we're looking at a next-gen camera-equipped iPad fielded specifically to test video calls. As you may recall, iPhone software surfaced with a very similar menu just weeks before the iPhone 4 came out, which either means someone was inspired to create a clever 'shop, or that we just got our first real glimpse at iProd 2,1. Oh, and Mr. Extreme Closeup? He's our friend Blurrycam's old college roommate, didn't you know?

  • New iPhone, iPad model codes set up for iTunes activation bypass -- CDMA versions, maybe?

So BGR's got a tipster lined up with alleged details from within iOS 4 beta firmware that shows a section dedicated to bypassing the usual iTunes activation scheme for three new product codes: iPhone3,2, iPhone 3,3, and iProd 2,1. Actually, these product codes aren't "new," per se; we saw all three of them in the iPad's firmware back in April, but they've yet to make the giant leap to officialdom. What's different here, then? Well, apparently, this activation-bypass scheme has historically had a tendency to show up in Apple's beta firmware right around the time a new iPhone goes into testing -- ostensibly so that field engineers don't need to worry about that rigmarole to do their jobs -- which suggests that these new models are getting ready for action. BGR's source says these will be the CDMA iPhone and the next-gen iPad, though you can't tell that from the product codes alone, and that doesn't explain why we've actually got two new iPhones listed. For what it's worth, the current iPad -- iPad1,1 -- used to go by the moniker iProd1,1 in firmware, so it stands to reason that we really are looking at a new tablet here. Now if you'll excuse us, we've got some Verizon Wireless field tech van recon to do.

  • The next iPad, iPod touch, and two new iPhones hinted at in iPad OS

It hasn't even been out for a day, but there are already hints of the next iPad in the current iPad's OS. BoyGeniusReport did some digging around in the iPad OS file system and found some interesting seeds burried pretty deep. They found references to "iPhone3,2," "iPhone3,3," "iPod4,1," and "iProd2,1." iProd 1,1 was the original reference to the current iPad. The current model of the iPhone is 3,1, while the current iPod Touch is 3,1, and the current iPad is 1,1. What the new references reveal is that not only is Apple working on the next iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (no shock there), but that there will be two versions of the next iPhone. Products with different storage capacities do not get differing referal numbers, so its anyone guess how the next iPhones may differ. One possibility could be that the differing iPhones may be an AT&T-specific iPhone while the other could be a T-Mobile or Verizon-specific iPhone. The only thing these product reference numbers tell us for sure is that in today's day and age, the newest piece of tech you buy is virtually already outdated.

Last summer, the Apple web was abuzz with the discovery of a mysterious "iProd" device in the iPhone's USB identifier list. Leaving aside the obvious jokes, and noting with some astonishment that Erica actually presaged the name back in 2006, we now can say for sure: the iProd was, in fact, the iPad. Full explanation after the link below.
