    To celebrate the imminent launch of Revolutionary Concepts' upcoming iPhone game Frogman, the studio has taken the price barrier off of its mobile version of Cobra Command. For today only, the game is available in the iTunes App Store for the low, low price of zero dollars. If you recall, we were quite fond of the decidedly über-'80s FMV classic in its iPhone incarnation -- and hey, it's normally five US dollars! That's like five neon plastic rulers at the dollar store! Or like 30-something five-stick packs of gum! Wait, maybe we're doing this whole perspective thing wrong... Cobra Command (FREE):

  • First issue of Mass Effect iPhone comic free on launch day

    Beginning February 3, the first issue of the four-part comic series Mass Effect: Redemption will be available on the iTunes App Store. To celebrate its release, Dark Horse and EA have announced the issue will be free for a limited time. How limited is the "free digital comic" window? One day only. After February 3, the digital release is bumped up to 99 cents. Of course, if you're a Mass Effect 2 fanatic you probably own the collectors' edition, which included a mini-version of the first issue. But, if you love moving pictures, a free digital comic is a hard thing to ignore.

  • Google Voice iPhone app rejected, current GV apps lose connection with iTunes

    Perhaps the big G spoke too soon when it said its new Google Voice service was coming to iPhone. First, GV Mobile developer Sean Kovacs relays a phone call he had with Apple where he was notified of his app being removed from the iTunes store for duplicating built-in iPhone features -- an app that was originally and purportedly approved by Phil Schiller himself. Next out the door was GVdialer, and if you thought that was all bad, now comes word that Google's official Voice app was flat-out rejected by Cupertino. Now it's hard to say with certainty who's to blame for these app rejections, but a good many fingers are pointing to the cellular carriers -- and given AT&T's previous statements about the SlingPlayer app, it's hard to argue with that. For its part, the company hinted at finding a workaround via web apps, much like they did when Apple gave Latitude a cold shoulder -- but doesn't that feel just a little 2007?   • iTunes app store surpasses 6,000 game mark

    1UP points out that, according to iPhone app tracking site Mobclix, more than 6,000 iPhone / iPod Touch games are now available via Apple's iTunes App Store. The digital distribution service, which launched July 11, 2008, is home to over 20,400 apps across multiple categories, of which games comprise 23% (the largest slice). 17% of all iPhone games are in the puzzle genre.Each week, Joystiq's newest feature, iPhone It In, takes a look at one prominent iPhone game. If you're looking for something new to play on your phone this weekend, you absolutely can't go wrong with Edge, Rolando, Zen Bound, Sway or Fieldrunners. They're swell.

  • I *heart* Katamari *heart*s iPhone

    click to open iTunes Namco's net ninjas have silently slipped an iPhone version of Katamari Damacy (fittingly renamed i Love Katamari – lower-case "i") onto the iTunes App Store (clicking opens iTunes). The latest portable version of the eccentric action game is being sold for $7.99 and, as you'd expect, is mainly controlled using the accelerometer inside the iPhone and iPod Touch. We downloaded the game to take it for a spin tilt.Apart from some weird hiccups (we wouldn't call them framerate problems since the game, well, freezes momentarily) and some early wrangling with the controls (tilt is used for turning and forwards/backwards movement, touching the left or right side of the screen "strafes") we found it to be an enjoyable pint-sized packaging of one of our favorite games. The art style is well suited to iPhone / iPod Touch – as is its overall pick-up-and-play-anytime nature. Hopefully Namco will push out an update soon to address the initial bugs, and iPhone can continue being "the future of gameplay" in the meantime.

  • iPhone: iLive dev iPwnd for 'stealing' rival's data

    Proving that there's still more head-shaking to be caused by the iTunes App Store in the wake of the "I Am Rich" app silliness, the developers of the 1337pwn.com Xbox Live friends list app for iPhone have accused the developers of the iLive Xbox Live friend list app of stealing their data and bandwidth. Oh no they d'int!According to the 1337pwn gang, oh yes, they did. On its blog, the app author writes, "We discovered that the other XBOX Live Friends application available in the AppStore is/was using our data feeds without permission. They were stealing a nice chunk of bandwidth and CPU through their improper use of our server interfaces. These folks were using our data without permission, authorization, or credit given. Not cool."What's both cool and funny is how 1337pwn went about getting its revenge. "With a couple of tweaks to our data feed, we are now credited for the data within their application. Given that we have a sense of humor, we have also incorporated new features such as a random online status," it revealed. The image above shows iLive pulling data from 1337pwn's server before its devs realized the jig was up. We've tested iLive since 1337pwn took action and found that most of its status fields now report "Suspended until next release." Well, at least we didn't pay for it.
