  • SpeedRunners recruits YouTubers to help fight cancer

SpeedRunners, a PC game about superheroes racing one another, is now a game about YouTubers racing one another - or at least it is for the duration of a week starting on Monday, October 20, when developer DoubleDutch Games and publisher tinyBuild host the "King of Speed" tournament. "A couple of months ago we had this idea. The idea that cancer sucks. And we should do something about it, with speed and running," an email to Joystiq from tinyBuild states. "SpeedRunners became popular in large part because of YouTubers. Why not put them in the game and create a charity campaign?" To that end, eight YouTube personalities have been adapted to the SpeedRunners world and divided into two teams of four. Each team will sell as a DLC pack for $2.99. Once the King of Speed tournament is underway, player wins will accrue under their respective team's banner. The team with the most wins, well ... wins. The entirety of the winning team's DLC sales will be donated to fighting cancer, while 30 percent of all DLC will go toward the cause as well. If you don't want to play as any of the YouTube personalities but still want to help push a team to victory, playing as either SpeedRunner or The Falcon will also count toward the tournament tallies for their respective team. To see who's on which team, check out the full list after the break:

The gnomes are on the edge of a technological solution, and PvP is worse than ever before. So when the NPCs receive an upgrade courtesy of Ian Beckman and Jesse Cox, we get the chance to enjoy RoboGuard. I'm pretty sure this version is just as valid as any other remake hitting the cinemas. My favorite parts are actually the scenes leading up to RoboGuard's big reveal. The final punchline is pretty good, but wouldn't have RoboGuard been that much more explosive is created by goblins instead? The world may never know. Interested in the wide world of machinima? Welcome to a WoW Moviewatch Staff Picks special! Each of our staff members will get the chance to feature one of their favorite videos, and tell us all why they love it. Mr. Ziebart goes first, and he chose: Welcome to the Deadmines. This is what Alex had to say about the video. Welcome to the Deadmines was released before Cataclysm's remix of the dungeon. The first iteration of the Deadmines was near and dear to people like me, who had been playing the game since launch. Not only is Welcome to the Deadmines an excellent piece of machinima on its own, but it kicked me in the nostalgia, too. Something about this video makes me want to dive right into Van Cleef's stomping grounds. Created by legendary machinima stars like Adrian Drott, Jesse Cox, Irdeen, Matt Greenburg, and more, Welcome to the Deadmines packs one heck of a talented punch. • WoW Moviewatch: The Hills Have Eggs

Work warning: There's some language in this video, some scary and violent scenes, but it's mostly comedy. Just be prepared. Wow. It's been a long time since we've seen a video like The Hills Have Eggs. Created by Olibith, this movie features an amazing cast of voice actors including Jesse Cox, Shockdingo, Nathalie Berggren, and Genna Bain. The music is by Cirkle, and the sound design is by Caruu. Sound like a big list of talent? It surely is, and the results show in the final product. Nominally a movie about some lost gnomes and the tragic results, The Hills Have Eggs shows off some of the most mind-blowing animation we've seen in a long time. The acting is fantastic, and the dialogue is creative and hilarious. Everything about this video reaffirms it as a professional, amazing movie. While I love all genres of machinima, it's a breath of fresh air to see something like this. I'll admit that I was worrying this kind of skillfully produced, cinematic machinima had been lost from the scene. I'm glad that Olibith has proven me wrong in spades. Around the Campfire is Wowcrendor's entry into the BlizzCon 2011 machinima contest. The movie didn't win, but I still think this is one hell of a funny video. Unfortunately, it's hard to talk about the plot without totally giving away the ending. I'll have to stick to some of the basics in this review. The voice acting was provided by Jesse Cox, Rawrbug, and Wowcrendor himself. The vocal performances were spot-on, of course, but that's what you would expect from these three. This is an interesting departure from Wowcrendor's normal type of machinima; while this was impressive, I hope the fancier production values don't keep the master of sarcasm from churning out movies in the future. My hat's off to everyone involved in Around the Campfire. This was a great show. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Outbreak Lordaeron snagged second place in the BlizzCon 2011 machinima contest. You can see why the movie did well within the first few seconds. The voice acting and graphics are amazing; the action is well choreographed and fluid. Jeffrey Cuiper created the machinima, and the music was performed by Walid Feghali. Voice acting was provided by Jesse Cox, Matt Greenburg, Jesse O'Connor, and Rawrbug. Daniel Whitcomb pointed out immediately that Outbreak Lordaeron is a parody of Left4Dead. I admit that I didn't recognize it. Even without understanding that video game reference, it's impossible not to get the obvious reference to traditional zombie horror. Four survivors must fight their way through the undead horde. The survivors' only hope is to use their wits, energy, and simple weapons to struggle toward freedom. Wowcrendor and Jesse Cox teamed up to create this comedy spoof, Molten Front Ganker. It's been a year since Bed Intruder swept the internet up in its Auto-Tune glory, and the duo chose to celebrate that anniversary through a WoW parody. This music video feels like such a great idea that I almost wonder why it took this long to produce. Of course, it's a good thing that the appearance of this parody happened just now, because Wowcrendor and Jesse have put together a tone-perfect video. The "Hyjal kids, Hyjal wife" pun couldn't be better suited to lampooning the source material; I can't think of a better lyrical pun at all. Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: Goodnight Orgrimmar

Goodnight Moon is a classic kid's book. Even if you've not read the book yourself, you've probably still heard of it. Essentially, the narrator wishes everyone in the world goodnight as he lulls your child to sleep. Wowcrendor was inspired by this classic book to create Goodnight Orgrimmar. In this short, beautiful little video, Wowcrendor manages to touch on all the little things that make a capital city feel bustling and alive. Voiced by Worgen Freeman, Goodnight Orgrimmar is a wonderful send-off to the Horde city. I'm clearly a fan of Wowcrendor and his work, but I think Goodnight Orgrimmar might be among the best yet. He manages to capture so many experiences and subtleties about the game while still giving it his trademark affection. My hat's off to Wowcrendor and guest star Jesse Cox for a smart, incredible little homage to the game. Interested in the wide world of machinima? World of Warcraft is Dead by Jesse Cox and Wowcrendor is a response to all those folks who keep saying that the World of Warcraft is going to be over any second now. We all know those folks; we've seen them on the official forums for years, and they even lurk around the dark corners of fan and news sites. Still, even after 6 years of people predicting the doom of WoW ... here we are. Blizzard has created one hell of a game, and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down quite yet. Just remember this when the next person tells you that the game is dead. That's been said before, and it will probably be said again. Interested in the wide world of machinima? Jesse Cox has a lot of fans. Jesse's a great guy and incredibly talented; we've featured his work more than a few times around here. Jesse has a new series out in which he does a Weekly Review of the week's news. It's a pretty fun summary and is totally worth checking out. In a similar vein, the Glitch Hunters over on YouTube have been putting together a great series featuring the landscape -- and bugs -- of Azeroth. Using methods completely available to every player of WoW, they are constantly exploring even the unintended landscapes. Balista tipped us off to these videos, saying, "Like imagine if Oxhorn was a documentary filmmaker."

Remembering Characters We Lost in 2010 is a brief memorial video created in honor of those lore figures who helped make WoW a rich, engaging story. These are the faces (and corpses) that helped define our experience in the game before Deathwing burninated the countryside. Jesse Cox is the creator of this movie and he cautions us that it might be somewhat sappy. I think it's just sappy enough. The song is New Lang Syne by Jim's Big Ego. It does a marvelous job of capturing the essence of WotLK's departure into Cataclysm. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! A catastrophe is coming Kezan, and it will force hundreds of goblins to find shelter and solace in foreign lands. And while this could be misery, the wise and profit-minded goblin will take advantage of Azeroth's wonderful grub and rife opportunity -- or at least, that's the premise of Gree D2 by Olibith, with voice actor Jesse Cox. Olibith issues some special thanks to his friend Sharon Davidson. Gree D2 is one hell of an impressive machinima. For all that it's short, Olibith packed some amazing graphics in a very brief time. The script was hilarious and fantastically executed by Cox. My hat's off to the gentlemen. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Mushanga won the BlizzCon 2010 machinima contest with this video titled The Rocket of Love. It's the story of a gnome man who wakes up, falls in love, professes that love, has it rebuked, and finds himself inadvertently taking decisive action. This all happens within the span of about two or three minutes, so you'll find the story pace moves along pretty quickly. Mushanga's imagery for this video is spot-on and amazing in execution. The voice actors for this movie were equally perfect, with appearances by Rawrbug, Jesse Cox and FrozenDeathKnight. Mushanga's video is pretty awesome and it's easy to see how he won. World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music and fan fiction. Show us how you express yourself by emailing lisa (at) wow (dot) com with your not-for-profit, WoW-inspired creations. You're bound to have seen the ebullient Welcome to the Deadmines here already, in WoW Moviewatch, spicing up a WoW Rookie article or linked in an enthusiastic reader comment. What you haven't had yet is the chance to meet its talented 17-year-old creator, Swedish machinimist X-Cross, a.k.a. Adrian Drott, or Tìnkle of EU Argent Dawn-A. We spoke with the young winner of Blizzard's World of Warcraft Movie Contest: Rise to Power to learn more about his creative process, his collaborators and where we might see him pop up in the future. World of WarCrafts: Winner of Blizzard's Rise to Power contest -- and you've only just turned 17! How long have you been making machinima, Adrian? X-Cross: I started with machinima in the early summer of 2008, and back then I was 15 years old. The first machinima I did was made together with my cousin and a friend of mine. It was a horrible WoW parody of Pokémon that for some reason a lot of people found quite entertaining and funny. After that, we decided to continue making the episodes but stopped after the third, since I wanted to go over to a bit more "serious" machinima making after all the great feedback.

Irdeen Productions created Boomdyada for the Blizzard Rise to Power contest. While the contest version of the movie is a little different, this final machinima is the one that Irdeen released to the world. The song and video is obviously inspired by the Discovery.com The World is Just Awesome series. This video is just awesome. I don't have the words for how happy it makes me. In the same way that Discovery.com's original advertisements somehow instills a sense of awe and wonder in the audience, Irdeen has done exactly the same thing for Azeroth. Featuring dozens of cameos and landscapes, Irdeen has managed to convey excitement and appreciation for everything World of Warcraft. (For those with a sharp eye and ear, that is in fact an Oxhorn cameo also.) The voice actors include such well known machinima stars as Jesse Cox and Matt Geenburg. Irdeen Productions should absolutely be proud of this video. It's got to become a favorite of many WoW fans, and I hope we see more like it when Cataclysm comes around. • WoW Moviewatch: Jesse Cox Voice Actor Video Demo

Tipster Kerri clued me in to the Jesse Cox Voice Actor Video Demo on YouTube. This is definitely not the sort of movie we'd regularly feature on Moviewatch, of course, but it points out an interesting facet of machinima that we don't usually talk about. Namely, this video shows off the skills of the voice actors. Many times, a video can be visually impressive, but less-than-stellar voice acting can detract from the overall experience. Jesse Cox has worked with Myndflame in several videos, as well as starring in Divided Soul. By watching this demo reel, you can very clearly see how much character and technique he brings to his roles. I think it can't be understated how important it is to a machinima to have actors who can speak their lines fluidly, believably, and without awkward moments.Like I said, the video demo itself is pretty straight-forward. I hope it brings the results to Jesse that he wants. But, I wanted to feature it to help highlight the often unsung hero of machinima: the voice actor. Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: Wish upon a Gnome, Episode 1

Creating a great machinima involves a delicate balancing act. You must use equal parts voice acting or visual expression of emotion, plot devices such as humor or fight scenes, engaging story lines, and proper editing and sound design, wrapped together in a neat little package. Too much of one single element can destroy an entire production. Today's featured movie makes a valiant effort at being complete.Wish upon a Gnome, Episode 1, is the first of three episodes centering around a wee gnome that stumbles upon a Genie that grants him three wishes. His first wish finds him craving the power he feels is long overdue. However, as he soon discovers, not everything goes as planned. Given how disastrous his newfound fame and glory turns out, I can't wait to see what he asks for in the next two episodes! Mushanga may just be the dark horse of the WeGame machinima contest. With only two unremarkable contest submissions prior to this entry, this is the first time he's involved voice actors, including Caruu and Jesse Cox, in his work. I found myself drawn into the story and rooting for the little guy, despite his flaws. If you get the chance, check out the higher quality versions of WuaG and give him some constructive feedback! If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.Previously on Moviewatch ...
