NBC's LX aims to provide local news for younger viewers
It's no secret that local TV news tends to attract much older audiences. NBCUniversal hopes to change that with a new digital news brand that aims to connect millennial and Gen Z age groups with stories from their community. Variety reported today that NBCU's local TV group will be launching LX, which will deliver original local news stories targeted at younger audiences. The new network will begin distributing news stories today on YouTube, LX.com and across social media channels.
Sharp combines its latest LCD improvements in LX series HDTVs
Coming straight out of a brand new 10G production facility in Sakai, Sharp's line of LX HDTVs (in 60-, 52-, 46- and 40-inch sizes) are all sporting the latest in LCD technology with UV²A panels and LED backlighting. Unfortunately, like Sony, these new screens abandon the higher quality RGB LED technology of the pricey XS1 series for cheaper white LEDs. Still, with a price of around $5,000 for a 52-inch compared to the $12,000 sticker shock of the XS1, it's easy to see why the switch was made. Other improvements include a light sensor for auto-calibration, a six speaker (5 speakers on the 40-inch) integrated 2.1 channel sound system with "Duo Bass" subwoofer and the usual assortment of VOD and AQUOS network support in store for Japanese buyers this November. While already available on a few U.S. models expect the new tech to spread across Sharp's U.S. lineup shortly, not to mention Sony and anyone other parties interested in a piece of the company's suddenly expanded manufacturing muscle. 3G Sidekick LX 2009 now available on T-Mobile
No doubt, the latest Sidekick looks pretty much like the swivel-screen Hiptop of yore. But as you'll recall from our review, the new 3G Sidekick LX takes the original tweener aesthetic high-end to match its aging user base. That means one of the best displays (854 x 480 pixel) available on a US handset and new 3G and assisted GPS radios to upload geotagged pics on the quick snapped by the LX's 3.2 megapixel camera with flash. New Sidekick LXs trickling into buyers' hands ahead of launch
Sure, T-Mobile said May 13 for the Sidekick LX 2009's official date with destiny, but if they want to start drop-shipping units a few days early, we don't think anyone's going to complain. In-the-wild unboxings certainly seem to back up stories that devices are already being shipped to those who've pre-ordered it ahead of release -- and call us crazy, but we think we prefer these shots to that creepy viral video unboxing from a while back. T-Mobile Sidekick LX 2009 video hands-on
Our first glimpse of T-Mobile's new 2009 edition Sidekick LX was all too brief, so we've jumped back in for some in-depth video hands-on (embedded after the break). One word of warning: this screen is truly incredible, and we can't be held responsible for any instances of sudden onset Sidekick envy. Traipsing through the OS, we found most everything to be responsive, intuitive and actually pretty feature-packed. The Facebook and Twitter apps are some of the best we've seen, and Laura our demo person was actually brave enough to shoot, upload and stream YouTube live on video with us. The browser had a bit of trouble with the visceral multimedia experience of Engadget.com, but overall seemed fairly together. The Download Catalog is a little barebones at the moment, but promising. Overall the hardware will be totally familiar to Sidekick users, but there are enough enhancements and refinements to make this lust worthy to folks on both sides of the Sidekick fence. It's comfortable in hand, with soft touch plastic and a super solid build, despite our best efforts at wrenching that swivel-and-tilt screen from its magical hinge. The phone hits T-Mobile on May 13th for $199 after rebates.
Sidekick LX gets "unboxed," shows off its creepier side
Fake corporate-marketing unboxing videos aren't anything new -- some of them are even pretty amazing -- but this latest one from T-Mobile is definitely the skeeziest we've ever seen. Follow along as a sex-crazed Sidekick LX attempts to limit access to his bubbly new owner's "spring break photos," pushes her into watching her "hot friends" play beach volleyball, and lament that he's ended up in the purse rather than her pocket -- yep, the Sidekick LX is the creepy little brother you wish you never had. Sidekick Gekko, Tony Hawk LX coming to Best Buy on July 27?
Leaked inventory screens from Best Buy (also known as Poor Buy, So-So Buy, Decent Buy, or Alright Buy, depending on how you feel about the place) suggest that the big box expects to take inventory of the Sidekick Gekko (or "Gecco," depending on whose spelling you believe) along with the Tony Hawk LX come the 27th of this month. That's just about on schedule with the expected release dates for both devices, so it seems believable enough -- and with the memory of the iD fading fast, an entry-level Sidekick with changeable faceplates is just what the doctor ordered (as for the Tony Hawk LX, we're really not sure who ordered that, but it certainly wasn't the doctor).
Fujitsu unveils three new DeskPower machines
Fujitsu pumped out three new DeskPower LX-series machines today, and they're slightly less ugly than the visually criminal EK30T. Apart from having been designed by someone with eyes, the new machines feature built-in 19- or 22-inch displays, 2.2GHz E4500 Core 2 Duos, digital and analog TV tuners, and dual layer burners. All of these are on sale now in Japan, for anywhere from ¥21,000 to ¥26,000 ($1854 - $2,296), depending on specs.[Via Akihabara News]
T-Mobile's Sidekick LX gets pictured, loved
Most of us have to wait until late October to get our hands on Danger's latest Hiptop sensation, but Boy Genius Report? Yeah, not so much on the waiting. Mr. Genius has scored a retail example of the LX, playing with the device and shooting a handful of glamor shots in the process. Despite its size -- it's quite a bit larger than its Slide stablemate -- it's said to be thin, comfortable, and "right" in the hand, the operating system is predictably Danger perfect, and the display is supposed to be a total stunner. T-Mobile's Sidekick LX gets an early date with eBay
Even though it looks like T-Mobile will be launching the Sidekick LX on October 24, some lucky individual has the chance to own one before launch thanks to an eBay auction. With bids starting at $600 and just over nine days to go, the highest bidder can be the envy of all the tweeners on the block. Sidekick LX "Shuriken" in the wild?
Is it just us, or does this thing look... well, not that great? This here is allegedly a shot of the upcoming Shuriken / Sidekick LX / Sidekick 4 -- Sharp's next-gen Hiptop alongside Motorola's Sidekick Slide -- doing its thing in the wild. Sadly, the case looks like cheap black plastic, the keyboard looks bizzare, and the chrome speaker looks out of place, though we suppose those bits could all be little pieces of preproduction indiscretion. Fortunately, the rumored 3-inch widescreen display should go a long way toward making up for any lingering ugliness when it launches in the not-too-distant future, but the Slide's looking a little better now, ain't it?
Future Sidekicks: LX and LE?
There's growing evidence in the ever-vigilant Sidekick community to support the suggestion that Danger will be rocking out with not one, not two, but a whole bounty of new models in the coming year. Unfortunately, we still don't really know with certainty what's what -- there's a device being referred to as the "Slide" (which may also be the "Zante"), there's likely a Sidekick 4 in there somewhere (which may or may not be the same thing as the Slide), and now we have the "LX" and "LE" to worry about. A series of posts over on Hiptop3.com has managed to gather evidence suggesting that a Sidekick LX and Sidekick LE are both on the way; if the leaked T-Mobile document wasn't enough proof, it turns out that the carrier has secured the rights to the domains sidekicklx.com and sidekickle.com. There's seems to be a lot of hardware in play here from Sharp and Motorola so we're going to keep the speculation to a minimum, but it seems Danger's doing alright for itself, eh?[Thanks, Ed]
Life/Style IPTV content jumps to WNBC New York
New York's WNBC is well-known for its pioneering attitude towards high definition, and just like it broke new ground by delivering the local news to viewers in crisp HD, the channel is making waves again by offering up made-for-IPTV content on one of its digital channels. Not too long after seeing made-for-mobile content heading to the tube, Life/Style Television, an IPTV channel that caters to "affluent consumers," will soon be making the leap to broadcast television as well. The channel's original series, "LX.TV 1ST/LOOK: NYC," will be beamed out OTA on WNBC 4.4; additionally, cable customers will be able to catch the daily half hour show by tuning in on Time Warner, Comcast, or Cablevision. The program, which will introduce completely new episodes on a weekly basis, will take viewers around various NYC hotspots, and include first-hand experience with "nightlife, restaurants, shopping, kids activities, and fitness and wellness destinations." So if you're anxious to take on the city, but don't exactly feel like fighting the bustling crowds, you can tune in at 8:00AM, 11:00PM, or 2:00AM to catch the fresh programming.
Pentax unveils shiny LX Gold SLR to celebrate 60 years
What better to snap oodles of pictures at your Thanksgiving feast than with a gravy-proof (and gold-plated) SLR? Taking a note from the bevy of other Midas-touched gizmos out there, the Asahi Pentax LX Gold sports a thoroughly blinding paint job with faux-alligator accents to add an extra layer of tacky to an already gaudy device. Apparently aiming to bring back a taste of 1981 (when the 10 millionth Pentax SLR rolled off the production line; pictured after the jump), the company is seemingly reintroducing the vivid shooter to celebrate 60 years of staying afloat. Of course, we aren't sure how many of these splendiferous units will be offered up (or wanted at all), but we're sure it'll rock quite a premium for those somehow interested.
