The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Viacom -- parent company to CBS and Paramount Studios -- is set to join Disney in offering movie downloads via Apple's iTunes store. This, according to "people familiar with the situation." For the moment, the deal will only cover Paramount's back catalog of titles such as "Forrest Gump," "Mission Impossible," and "The Truman Show." The deal could be announced as early as today. No mention of any LionsGate deal which we've been expecting since August. So come on in, join us for our live coverage of Macworld and find out for yourself.[Via ArsTechnica]Read (subscription required)

Well, tomorrow's the day. The day we find out whether all the rumors are true and the Applephone and / or solid-state ultraslim MacBook and / or iTV and / or true wireless-video-touchscreen iPod will be announced (we're not holding our breath on any of the above), or whether we'll spend another few months sorting through rumor, speculation, and bad Apple product mockups. Tune our browser in tomorrow as we report live from the Moscone Center in San Francisco to see just what Apple's got up their sleeves kicking off their 30th calendar year of business. As always, set your browsers on autofire-refresh (we promise we'll try our best not to crash this time!) and watch out for late-breaking developments. Some time zones are listed below for when the show gets underway. Don't forget, you'll want to tune in early for our pre-game coverage.07:00AM - Hawaii09:00AM - Pacific10:00AM - Mountain11:00AM - Central12:00PM - Eastern05:00PM - GMT / London06:00PM - Paris02:00AM - Tokyo (January 10th)P.S. -Feel free to leave your time zone's local time in comments, we can't publish them all!

"People familiar with the situation" have apparently informed the WSJ that Apple is launching the Applephone (or whatever it's called) as early as tomorrow. (See, even the kings of MSM aren't omitted from the Apple rumor mill.) They don't really give any more than that, but it's the WSJ, and conventional wisdom kind of states that when the business journal of record goes on the record, you should perk your ears up and listen (at least). Maybe we're interested just because we want to be done printing rumors and rumors about rumors from blogs and papers alike.[Thanks, O Jason my Jason]

It's that time of the year again-that wonderful sense of anticipation while we wait for the big day and the new toys. No, not Christmas, Macworld San Francisco! Well O'Reilly and company are trotting out their heavyweights for MWSF, including David Pogue, Derrick Story, and others. Anybody who is thinking of going, check out the schedule to whet your appetites (and on that cold January morning, spare a kind thought for your faithful scribe who will be gazing fondly in a westerly direction while his unpardonably lucky fellow-bloggers are in San Francisco providing TUAW coverage).[Via MacVolPlace]
