  • DS Daily: Those pesky names

Stupid names. Who needs 'em? We never did. Growing up, we never talked about moblins or lynel in The Legend of Zelda. We talked about the spear dudes and those stupid #*@&$^) centaur guys (except with more colorful metaphors). We were dirty, dirty children who shouldn't have been allowed to mix with the other children. But the point is, manual-reading aside, the official names for creatures in video games just never seemed to stick with us. Oh, maybe some (evil) people could summon the precise names for Lakitus and Metools, but we were not those people. This is why we like Castlevania. You know what a Fish Head is? It's a freakin' fish-headed monster. Even we can remember that. But what about you?

  • Epicenter Studios planning to fight fire with... Wii

Despite Mega Man's interpretation of the subject, a fireman is designed to put out fires, not to start them. Yes, we said "designed." Mega Man actually got that part right -- firemen are, in fact, super efficient robots. According to upstart developer Epicenter Studios, they're also the perfect subject for a video game on Nintendo's Wii. The studio, comprised of former producers for the Call of Duty, Shrek, Spider-Man and Star Trek franchises, recently announced a Wii game by the name of Real Heroes: Firefighter. Gamasutra describes it as a "firefighting action puzzle game," one that has the Wiimote becoming a water hose, a fire axe or a crowbar (for saving people, not bashing aliens!). The game also features "Thinking Fire" technology meant to incur "unexpected changes to the environments that will suddenly alter the player's options and strategies." It sounds an awful lot like real, dumb fire to us, but we'll take anything given today's glaring lack of Burning Rangers 2. If the game finds a publisher and makes its planned 2008 holiday release, we'll see whether or not those flames are intelligent enough to spread to the sales charts.[Via Wii Fanboy]

Striking while Mega Man ZX is still fresh in our minds (and our Sales posts), Capcom has two new commercials advertising the action platformer's sequel, Mega Man ZX Advent, for its Japan release this July 12th. The US version won't arrive until October, but we love to oversaturate our minds with previews and media to the point where we lose interest in a game long before it even hits store shelves. Depressing, isn't it?If you enjoyed the anime cut-scenes that were scattered throughout Mega Man ZX, you'll be happy to see their return with these clips of Grey -- one of the two new heroes in Advent -- dodging about a jillion bullets and lasers. Jump past the post break and defeat one of the Pseudoroid bosses for the video.

Insert Credit reports that Japanese mobile phones are able to download the original Mega Man (Rock Man to the Japanese). The game has apparently had its difficulty readjusted "so that the new age kids won't throw their phones in frustration." They believe a different version is hitting the US currently. Has anybody seen it, how does it play? It's a good thing to see mobile games moving beyond Tetris clones, even though the Tetris and Bejeweled games still make the most money. One of the more eye-roll inducing moments was Square-Enix's (along with many other publishers) focus on mobile games two E3s ago. Thankfully, Nintendo DS and PSP sales redirected focus. As much as getting Mega Man or Final Fantasy on a mobile phone sounds nice, focusing on making "real" versions for the Nintendo DS and PSP sounds like a better thing for gamers -- or, at least, less obnoxious.

Online import shop Play Asia is trying to lighten its stock of mega-robot guys, hosting a week-long sale on RockMan 3 Zero. Capcom's GBA action-platformer has been discounted to $9.90, almost a fifth of its original price! RockMan 2 Zero boasts a similar discount as a limited time offer, but you get an additional dollar off if you bundle the two games together for your order, bringing the total cost to $18.80.And in case you've already forgotten, Renchi has also marked a number of its DS import titles down to $9.99, one of them being RockMan ZX! Geologists, rejoice![Via CAG]

We love region-free consoles! Not only does it allow us to play games that never get released in the US, but it also gives us freedom to choose the cheapest version of worldwide-release games. Renchi.com has marked down a load of DS games, and there's plenty of stuff for US gamers to enjoy. First, the Japanese versions of US games. You can get Yoshi Touch & Go (Catch! Touch! Yoshi!), Mega Man ZX (Rockman ZX), Star Fox Command, the just-released Honeycomb Beat, and a few others for $10. If you want a uniquely Japanese experience, there's a bunch of stuff including Mawasunda!!, a lot of miscellaneous non-games and puzzle games (including an amusing-looking coloring game), and a nice selection of D3's Simple Series stuff. Stock is rapidly diminishing, so go browse right now.[Thanks, joe!]

  • Mega Man Legends 3 may exist, if Inafune finds tons of zenny

Here's a story that hits a personal note. Mega Man has always held a very, very precious spot in the gaming world for us (read: me). Following the franchise from MM 1 - 6, jumping to the SNES 7 the three Mega Man X series of games, even the Mega Man Soccer game, to the PS One release of Mega Man 8, Mega Man X 4 - 8, it's a staple. Oh, let's not forget the ninth installment with Mega Man and Bass. That one was tough. What a lot of people didn't follow, however, were the incredibly entertaining and highly enjoyable Mega Man Legends titles. There were only two, but well worth your time. And no, the game boy games don't count. There are too darn many to care about. Maybe the ZX series.Anyway, in a surprise interview with the creator of Mega Man, 1UP asked if there were any plans to bring next-gen treatment the blue bomber's way. Keiji Inafune said that he'd like to, but worried that it would be impossible to recoup the costs of making such a game on next-gen platforms. So, when told to ignore the whole monetary part of it, he replied thus: "I think it probably would be Mega Man Legends 3. And that's not just me -- a lot of the original team members would also love to make a sequel. They talk about it. I talk about it sometimes. I know they love that series and so do I. If I were to say right now, I have a tiny, tiny, tiny dream that I wish I could realize, but I don't know if it's possible, it would be to do a sequel in the Legends series."Hell. Yes. It's great to actually hear that -- it's Capcom's most promising Mega Man series, really. Promising, not lucrative. Inafune said that the engine to build that game on would probably be the same as that used in Dead Rising or Lost Planet, which makes sense. Especially if you compare the movement mechanics in the latter to the Legends games. We hope this happens -- if you're rich, Inafune is asking you to pelt him with change until he's got the cash. We'll pitch in.

Virtual Console pricing got you down? Not to fret -- there are plenty of GameCube compilation titles available at a budget price. Racketboy recently took an in-depth look at a few of these game sets, offering readers a detailed look at what's included in each ... and some answers to the question of whether or not they're worth your $10. For instance, he reports that the Namco collections play well, but Midway Arcade Treasures seems to feature a few games with below average controls. But even with a few duds, the pricing on most of these sets is just right for gamers on a tight budget who need to get their retro fix.

Hardcore racing game fans can now look forward to being slightly less completely broke when Forza 2 is dropped on the masses May 29th: Microsoft has slashed $20 off of the 360 Wireless Racing Wheel's price, leaving it at $129.99. It's still high enough to make your significant other mad, just probably not so high that they'd cut you in your sleep. The game's release will also be celebrated with events June 1-3 like leaderboard tournaments, play sessions with the developers and prizes. With all this generosity, we wish a new Forza was released every week! You know, like Mega Man games.

Missed out on Mega Man ZX last year? Now is the time to make things right! Amazon has slashed the action-platformer's price down to almost half of its original $29.99 cost, offering the title up for $16.16 ((free shipping on orders over $25).ZX was praised for its punishing difficulty and Metroidvania design, hailed by some critics as the best release to hit the Capcom series since Mega Man 2 for the NES. Does that sound like a title you'd want to skip? We can't guarantee that this sale price will last for long, so buy it now while it's still cheap! • Rumor: New Dead or Alive will be PS3 exclusive

Insert your own jiggling pun here, EGM is reporting the rumor that Team Ninja's crafting a new Dead or Alive title that will be exclusive to the PS3. There's no word on if this is a new branch of the series or the Dead or Alive 5 that alleged joker, smoker and midnight poker Tomonobu Itagaki confirmed last November. Also slipping from Quarterman's silver tongue: Capcom may be working on a new version of the original Mega Man, remade for the PlayStation Network (what's the appropriate gift for the 100th Mega Man? Glass? Sapphire?). Oh, and, lest we forget, Q says a new Disgaea for PS3 and a new Kingdom Hearts (not Kingdom Hearts 3) are on the way. What's that? You want more? Well, only the first hit is free: You'll have to buy this month's EGM for more details.

  • US gets equipped with Mega Man Star Force cartoon

Mega Man series fans have something else to look forward to in the near future, besides the never-ending stream of spinoffs and sequels. Viz Media has licensed the anime adaptation of the latest spinoff, Mega Man Star Force (Ryuusei no Rockman in Japan) for US audiences. The story is some baffling thing about a human kid merging with an alien entity called Omega-Xis to become Mega Man, which we're sure will make more sense after we play the game. It makes us a little nostalgic for the sparse robot vs. robot storyline of the original Mega Man series, but not the original Mega Man cartoon. Do you think the cartoon will be good enough to promote a game with three versions? We make fun of Capcom for all the Mega Man overload, but we're huge fans and will no doubt fill our TiVos with episodes of this series.

  • Two new DS titles for Mega Man's 20th Anniversary

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Two_New_Mega_Man_games_celebrate_the_character_s_20th_Anniversary'; When it comes to Mega Man's anniversaries, Capcom is a lot like Disney. They're always celebrating up to five years ahead or behind the times. It is indeed the 20th anniversary for the blue bomber and another year means another set of games with the Nintendo DS getting all the love. Not to shock you or anything, but last year's Mega Man ZX is getting a sequel by the name of Mega Man ZX Advent. Once again you'll be assuming the roles of two androgynous kiddies as they tear it up Zero style. The title looks and feels to be more of the same, but the addition of multi-cart co-op and head-to-head play should make it more interesting for those coming back around.Out to prove that it is in fact possible to squeeze blood out of a stone, Capcom announced not one, not two, but three different versions of their new Network title, Mega Man Star Force. Pegesus, Leo and Dragon are the names of the game and you'll find the same Mega Man Network mechanics here, only with a slight twist. The 2-D overworld remains the same, but the battles now take place in 3-D, albeit on the same familiar grid. It's a lot like Super Paper Mario's 3-D in how it simply feels like a perspective switch. The game also sports Wi-Fi Connect functionality for players to trade items.Mega Man Star Force is due out this August, followed by Mega Man ZX Advent this October.%Gallery-2561%

  • New Rockman ZX Advent screens and character art

    02.28.2007

Capcom released a ton of screens today for the new Megaman ZX sequel, Rockman ZX Advent, and they show exactly what we want to see in our Megaman games: running from left to right and shooting at robots, all delivered in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D. We could look at stuff like this all day. Coincidentally, that's kind of our job.In the first ZX, kids use "Biometals" ("Livemetals" in the Japanese version) to transform into robots similar to X and Zero from the Megaman X series, as well as a fused ZX form. The kids from last time, Vent and Aile, have been replaced by a pair of functionally-identical crimefighting children, called Grey and Ashe. They operate a new Biometal, called Model A, which enables transformation into a dual-wielding robot seemingly based on Axl from Mega Man X7, a game that we're glad is on the PS2 (so we don't have to like it). We've included character designs and a selection of screens for you. Bask in their 2D-ness after the break, won't you? We shrunk them down a bit from Dengeki's original display, to make the basking more successful. Over-enlarged DS screens are not cool.

The Mega Man series is known for its excellent music, but one theme from the series stands above its contemporaries. This masterful work of digital audio art sits alone and exalted as the finest of the fine, as the Hope Diamond might sit among a pile of lesser gems. The true beauty and nuance of this piece is remembered but once a year, today, on Snake Man theme music day, a new holiday that continues in the tradition of game music days past. Come celebrate with us, won't you?

The fine chaps at Siliconera have uploaded a video documenting the use of the Wave Scanner in Mega Man: Star Force (or Ryuusei No Rockman in Japanese). The Wave Scanner allows one to scan in specific cards for use with the game, allowing one to modify their game in various ways, including customizing stats such as HP and gain new items. Overall, it looks fairly cool from the demonstration and adds a lot of depth to the game.As always, video has been embedded past the post break.[Via Siliconera]

  • Epic to churn out Gears of War until the Sun explodes

Unreal Tournament 3 producer Jeff Morris joked about the fate of his colleagues at Epic in an interview, saying that "the shoe has turned" when it comes to their current development cycle. The house that Unreal built has been hammering away at their foundation, cranking out Unreal titles since the series' conception in 1998, up until the release of Gears of War this past year. Could Marcus and company squeeze blood from stone the same way Mega Man has all these years?"It's funny because I think Gears started after a lot of people were a little fatigued working on UT, and now they're all probably making Gears for the rest of their lives," said Morris, reflecting on the massive success of Gears. He goes on to state that once again, no sequel has officially been announced, though we'd bet our precious thumbs that we'll be hearing of one down the road. We'll also be sure to put our acting chops to the test and look surprised when Gears turns into a trilogy.
