Metal Gear Solid 4 will include a small taste of the Metal Gear Online experience through an included "Starter Pack" mode, Hideo Kojima revealed at the Konami press conference today in Tokyo. A new trailer highlighted the game's sharp graphics, which nearly match the visual fidelity of its single-player counterpart. In addition, fun gameplay bits, such as the ability to roll down enemies in a barrel were shown. The trailer ended with a soldier launching himself helplessly into the air by using a massive cannon device (a Halo nod, perhaps?).Both Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Online will be playable at TGS. Stay tuned for more.

Whilst reading this script, imagine giant robots fighting each other and monkeys dancing around (seriously). Oh, and add a fart joke at the end. Nope, still no Everyday Shooter. Instead, this week's PSN update is bloated with video content, including a preview of Metal Gear Solid 4's beastly bosses (RAGE!!) and another installment of the Heavenly Sword anime ad (building hype for a game that one early review seems to suggest is just that, hype). And, if you didn't lift it from the Japanese Store months ago, an expanded localized version of the Folklore demo (still without voice-overs 'cept in FMVs) is also available: Folklore "Sneak Preview" demo Heavenly Sword "Making of" No. 3 Heavenly Sword Anime No. 3 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots "Beast Corp" trailer Haze trailer TimeShift trailer Movie trailers: Things we Lost in the Fire, Vantage Point, National Treasure: Book of Secrets [Via press release]%Gallery-3178%

  • Oops, HMV admits error in MGS4 Xbox listing

HMV admits that a pre-order listing for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on Xbox 360 found on the site over the weekend was an administration error. The listing caused quite a stir over the weekend as the MGS4 rumor that the game will make its way to Xbox 360 just won't die, recently spurred on further by Konami executive statements. What lent the listing a strange twinge of respectability was that the date set for the Xbox 360 version was five months after the expected spring release of the PS3 version, giving Sony that extra time to still use that word "exclusive" which keeps being attached to the game.HMV says that the error occurred because someone got overexcited and that the company originally wanted to simply "ask customers if they wished to receive an alert in the event of this title one day coming out on this platform." They say they didn't intend to start taking pre-orders. HMV says, "We're sorry to have caused such a stir." So watch out for those HMV listings, when they get excited, games magically appear.

Speaking to GameTrailers at the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary shindig a few weeks back, assistant producer at Kojima Productions, Ryan Payton, answers some of of the pressing questions in this post-demonstration world that we live in. Questions like, "How does octocam work on Snake's head?"Even if you've analyzed the E3 trailer frame-by-frame, this interview does warrant a look, if not to see Ryan answer the age old question of, "Is this truly the end of the Metal Gear series?" Well, of course it isn't but that hasn't stopped Kojima from saying so ... again. Ryan offers up a much more likely outcome, saying, "It's far from over but as far as Solid Snake's story? Yeah, we're going to wrap it up with Metal Gear Solid 4."

What more did you want us to say? It's an absolutely awesome new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It's got an incredible fight between Ninja Raiden and Vamp. It's got more gravely voices than a hot tar gargling competition. Sadly, it doesn't seem to contain any actual gameplay, but it's still probably going to be the best minutes of your day. Seriously, just watch it.

As he presented his piping hot trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, (here's a link) Hideo Kojima related the sad news that the game, due in early 2008, would be his last entry in the series and the end of the story. "So, all the story plot, the characters, the mysteries, will be revealed," he said through his translator, as the Incredible Hulk sadly walking away music began playing in our imaginations. He promises that he's putting everything he's got into the series finale though, a fact that seemed to be evidenced by the trailer, which was capped by an absolute stunner of a battle between Vamp and Ninja Raiden. Though not playable at the conference, Kojima said he'd be demoing gameplay in Tokyo next week. Count us enthused.

  • April Fool's Alert #3: MGS4 on Xbox 360 and Blue Hobbits in LOTRO

This one is a cute April Fool's Day joke, despite Turbine announcing it on Friday, they did give it a dateline of April 1. What Turbine says is that in their upcoming Lord of the Rings Online, you'll meet the Sméorufolc, a version of hobbit who wear caps of white wool. They also have a passion for mushrooms and eating them altered their skin color to blue. Yes, they are Middle-earth Smurfs. The "press release" looks to be full of subtle anagrams and generally playful nonsense. Only a few more hours till Blizzard, a company known for their April Fool's Day jokes, steps up to the plate. What will it be?On the other end of the cute spectrum, a confirmation of Metal Gear Solid 4 on the Xbox 360. We still can't tell if this was intended as a joke, but VG Resource Center says they have confirmation of MGS4 on the Xbox 360. VGRC claims they have an email from Konami stating, "Yes, in fact, we are working on putting Metal Gear Solid 4 on the Xbox 360 and PC, which should both come out roughly 6 months after the PS3 release. However, we've been working with Microsoft so the 360 and PC versions will both take advantage of Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live, with such features as achievements and the ability for 360 and PC owners to play against each other in multiplayer. I'd love to give you some more details, but this is already pushing it. We are making the big announcement July 11th at this year's E3, so you'll just have to wait until then. Sorry!"So, the source at Konami acknowledged the game, announced another platform, said it would have Live capabilities, says the big announcement won't be till July 11, puts it all in a perfect quote and then apologizes that they can't give away any more information? Damn, you already gave away the whole cow, what are you apologizing for? We don't need anything else!

  • Konami: "MGS4 is exclusive to PlayStation 3." Us: "!"

Well, what did you think they were going to say? Just days after the Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming to Xbox 360 rumorang swooshed back for yet another appearance in the console exclusivity spotlight, series publisher Konami reached its giant metaphorical arm out a similarly metaphorical window and snatched it from the air. Then they stomped it dead. Again.Konami told CVG that "MGS4 is exclusive to PlayStation 3." Of course, this is similar (but not identical) to their statement to Joystiq last time we danced to this number, that "Metal Gear 4 is a PS3 title." Of course, we've seen other highly anticipated third-party titles go through a similar exclusivity Bermuda triangle, their exact whereabouts unknown for some time. We can't imagine what sort of high-powered, backroom negotiations would result in a third-party game as popular as MGS4 being relegated to a single new-gen platform, not to mention one that may be in short supply until as late as 2008 (according to some).!

  • Rumor: Metal Gear Solid 4 not a PS3 exclusive? [update 1]

The new confirmed EGM cover with Halo 3 info is nice, but it's a little blurb in the top right that's caught the attention of gamers: Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360? Drama ensues.Sister site Xbox 360 Fanboy and Xboxic have been following the story. Turns out that Che Chou, who is identified as an ex-1UP staffer says, "It's simply a rumor that Konami higher-ups are pressuring Kojima Productions to consider making MGS4 a multiplatform game because production costs on the game are unsurprisingly high and only getting higher ... Whatever the case, I highly doubt it's going to happen so quit building yourself a disappointing kiloton bomb." We've contacted Konami's PR department and they said, "Metal Gear 4 [sic] is a PS3 title." Doesn't seem like EGM made a deal to get some exclusive info, but instead took a rumor, slapped a question mark on it, and hoped to build hype and sell magazines. Hey, we don't fault them, check out our headline above! Maybe the info is worth the price of the magazine? The rest of the cover info is snore inducing and has already been covered to death. The Halo 3 info was already leaked, but EGM says no, no, wait -- we have more info not leaked, please buy us. It's a brave new world and the ball is certainly in the publisher's court. Konami very well may be having cocktails with Ubisoft (Assassin's Creed) and getting whispers that exclusivity isn't as important as making money. Now we'll go back to building our kiloton bomb.[Update: Added Konami PR quote]
