What we're watching: One Tree Hill kicks off its new season tonight on The CW, however we're a bit confused about its partner, America's Next Top Model. The show has not previously been high-def to our knowledge, but a few sites are indicating it is. • MTV's MHD is going stay MHD - no reality TV shows

People like MTV's high-def station, MHD, because the station isn't anything like what MTV has evolved into. MHD is all about music not some reality TV show where the grandparents of some teenage girl all sit on a bus trying to decide how to spend $120,000 on her 13th birthday. No, MHD is like the MTV of old, when music was king video killed the radio star and that is the way it is going to stay too according to MTV's senior vice president and GM, Eric Sherman. This station is going to stay all about the music. There isn't going to be any reality TV shows, documentaries, or even award shows in high-def because it has little to nothing to do with HD. Cool, now if we can get back a little Beavis and Butthead to fill in the commercial breaks here and there, it would be just like the good 'ol MTV.UPDATE: TV Week provided us with the actual interview they conducted as part of their weekly HD newsletter.

  • Hello MHD: MTV on our HDTVs today

MTV's high definition channel MHD continued its stealth launch on Comcast at least in the Detroit area, showing up on this blogger's channel listing late last night. INHD2 is but a memory, Tour de Gorge and Twilight Zone reruns, you shall be missed. 8~ hours in it's a welcome addition, many widescreen videos obviously mastered for HD including the Gorillaz Feel Good Inc. video that played during MTV-HD's original debut in January. Is this the HDTV killer app that will truly give high-def a boost along with game consoles and next gen DVDs? That remains to be seen but we can't help thinking it might be nice if the cable company actually told people it was on. We'll be able to give some more in depth impressions once this Rihanna video goes off we've had some time to let it sink in.

We have good news for all of you Cox Communications subscribers in the Roide Island and Connecticut areas - you are getting MTV's high-def station, MHD. One of our eagle-eyed readers noticed the announcement on Cox's own pages so we have a great feeling that this is going to happen. The page indicates that MHD is going to launch on July 26 and will be found on channel 730. Cool.[thanks for the tip Dave]

  • MTV's high-def channel (MHD) coming to Comcast in August?

    by

    07.10.2006

TVPredictions says yes. Although the network is already available to some Comcast, Time Warner and Charter subscribers, most cable customers don't have the channel yet. According to their source the channel will be added in Philadelphia at the beginning of August, and roll out in other cities shortly afterwards. With the Xbox 360 already available and the PS3 debuting this fall, their 18 to 34 year-old target demographic has an increasing number of reasons to pick up an HDTV and MTV is obviously looking to be at the forefront. MHD getting more exposure on a national level will almost certainly bring more viewers (and subsequently more HD content) than other cable networks making the switch like HGTV and Food Network.A big question is whether this will be in addition to ESPN2-HD or replacing it, with the sports network fading out in many areas post-World Cup the way Universal HD did after the Winter Olympics. While Real World HD would be cool, we need Cribs in high-def so we can look at other people's HDTVs on our HDTVs.

  • Charter cable adding two high-def stations in the St. Louis area

    07.10.2006

One of our readers, Mark from St. Louis, woke to a surprise this morning. There was a message on his digital cable box indicating that Charter was adding two new high-def stations on July 18th - TNT-HD and MHD. We are happy for our St. Louis readers. TNT-HD is a nice station even though they play a bunch of up-converted SD stuff, but they are invaluable during the NBA playoffs. MHD is MTV's new high-def station that from what we hear, we don't have it in our areas yet, plays music. Yeah, we know; kind of shocking. Enjoy 'em folks and cable companies, keep 'em coming.

  • Chicago Comcast subscribers getting new high-def stations?

Rob H. just dropped us a note indicating that he is now getting MHD (MTV's high-def station) and ESPN2HD on Comcast. He lives in the Chicago area so we are wondering, did anyone else just get these station too? Rob indicated that the programming guide doesn't seem to be totally downloaded so if you are running through your guide, you might want to look out for "Promotional Programming." Now we are hoping that the word "promotional" does not mean that this is just a tease. We hate it when Comcast does that.So everyone check out their Comcast line-up once again and look for MHD. Most of you should have ESPN2HD by now but if not you may want to check for it too.[thanks for the tip Rob]

  • Comcast adds MHD and NESN HD to the Boston market [UPDATE]

    06.15.2006

Bob Colby, writer of Switchover Scenarios: Tracking the DTV Transition, has found some new HD stations and it looks like Comcast has been busy in the Boston area. It seems that they have launched two new high-def stations. MTV's high-def network, MHD, has been sited on 828. New England Sports Network high-def station, NESN HD, has been sharing INHD2s channel for some time but now gets its own station on 851. The funny thing though is that a reader at AVSFourms has confirmed the new stations but is also reporting that INHD2 is no longer on the channel guide.Anyone else have these stations available to them?[thanks for the tip Bob][UPDATE: thanks for the main Boston Comcast thread]

HDTV owners like it when content providers go the extra mile, and that's pretty much what MTV did with these station ID spots for their high definition station, MHD. This cool animation which is entirely black and white was created by Psyops for the channel and also has 5.1 surround sound. Check out their page to see what kind of challenges they faced when animating for HD, maybe that's the reason we're not seeing prime-time animated shows like The Simpsons in high-def yet.[Via the SD loving heathens @ AdJab]

  • The one and only MTV show that needs to be HD

    04.16.2006

You need to no something before you read anymore: I have never seen MTVs new high-def station,  MHD. Truthfully, I have no desire to. MTV used to be a great station, but two things happened. One, the station started moving away from its roots and became a cultural station instead of a music station. And two, I grew up. There is still one show that I love to watch though and that is Cribs.I don't know what exactly I like about the show. But I think it has something to do with the program giving us a glimpse on how the other half lives. Sometimes it is funny to count how many cheap plasmas the rappers have but yet they are so proud of their flat screens. Side note: most impressive HDTV was Brad and Jens 40-inch Sony XBR sunk in the wall of their kitchen. This type show is just meant for high-def. Imagine seeing everything from Nelly's fish to Hugh's little bunny's, all in beautiful HDTV.

  • Is MTV's The Real World going high definition?

MTV announced today that the next season of their granddaddy of reality TV will be shot in Denver, CO. Where is MTV's high definition station MHD based? Colorado. It makes complete sense to me for them to use one of their longest running and most popular series (especially since they don't show music videos anymore) to promote their new station.

  • MHD channel coming to DIRECTV in 2098!

Today must be the day of bad dates and we don't mean the kind that Paula Abdul can't seem to get without Dr. Phil's help. First it was MSNBC flubbing on the DTV transition and now it's DIRECTV and the launch of MTV's HD channel, MHD. Eagle-eyed HDBeat reader George tipped us off on the numeric faux pas when he hit up the MHD website and punched in zip code to check for MHD's availability in his area. George got the screen cap above which clearly indicates there's no high-def music videos in da hood for decades to come. Here's a close-up of the date that few of us will live to see; sorry, but it's true. Seems a shame to announce the launch of a channel only to never see it in this lifetime, at least not on satellite. Whaddya think George, didja just Punk'd in HD?

MTV's new high definition channel MHD went live yesterday on Cox Communications and Verizon, it is available in Florida and California only for the moment. Another interesting note is that besides the launch concert featuring the Goo Goo Dolls, MTV has been shooting in high definition with 5.1 surround sound for over a year, building up content for the new network. Any HDBeat readers notice a new HD channel in their lineup today?

  • Free concert thanks to MTVs new HD station

MTVs new high definition station is set to launch on January 16th and will feature, check this out, music. That's right. Music. Better yet. They are throwing a free concert! The show will be held in Breckenridge, Colorado January 11th and 12th. "Music With Altitude" will feature Dashboard Confessional, Gary Allen, Goo Goo Dolls and some reality TV star turned recording artist named Cheyenne Kimball. The concerts are in honor of Ullr Fest, an annual week-long winter festival in Breckenridge.Ok. I did not say it was going to be a good, free concert. In case you forgot, MTVs new HD station, MHD, is going to be located in Aspen, Colorado. They have not made much other details available but I am sure we are going to see original programming that is reminiscent of HDNet's True Music. That's fine by me as I like the program a lot. Maybe MTV will even port over some of their good, but rare, programs like Cribs and...I don't think I watch anything else but Cribs. But hey, more HD stations the better!
