Today must be the day of bad dates and we don't mean the kind that Paula Abdul can't seem to get without Dr. Phil's help. First it was MSNBC flubbing on the DTV transition and now it's DIRECTV and the launch of MTV's HD channel, MHD. Eagle-eyed HDBeat reader George tipped us off on the numeric faux pas when he hit up the MHD website and punched in zip code to check for MHD's availability in his area. George got the screen cap above which clearly indicates there's no high-def music videos in da hood for decades to come. Here's a close-up of the date that few of us will live to see; sorry, but it's true. Seems a shame to announce the launch of a channel only to never see it in this lifetime, at least not on satellite. Whaddya think George, didja just Punk'd in HD?

  • MTV Show "Laguna Beach" now in the iTMS

Season One of MTV's Laguna Beach reality show has been added to the iTMS. This apparently is the first MTV show to appear on the iTunes Music Store, and perhaps hints at a larger partnership between Apple and MTV. You can find the show by doing a search in the TV category in the iTMS. There has been no official word from MTV about other shows that may be added in the near future.Drop me a line when Pimp My Ride shows up in the iTMS. That's definitely worth the 1.99 an episode.Update: Apparently there is new Comedy Central content on the iTMS as of today as well. This update includes South Park, Drawn Together, and Best of Comedy Central Stand-up. Rock! [thanks Ruben Santiago and Young!][via iLounge]

  • HDTV music show for DIRECTV, no it's not MTV-HD

VOOM must be on to something with their RaveHD channel; that's the one with high-def and surround sound music performances. MTV-HD was the first to wake up and smell the coffee and now it's CD USA on DIRECTV starting next week on January 21st. Actually CD USA isn't even a channel, it's a weekly show every Saturday night at 6 p.m. on Channel 101 in SD and HD. Four on-air hosts will bring the most popular acts as well as some up-and-comers to your HDTV screen; expect live performances to take center stage, which ironically reminds of me the Saturday Night Concert series MTV used to run back in the '80's. In case you're wondering: yes, we're older than cable television.

MTV's new high definition channel MHD went live yesterday on Cox Communications and Verizon, it is available in Florida and California only for the moment. Another interesting note is that besides the launch concert featuring the Goo Goo Dolls, MTV has been shooting in high definition with 5.1 surround sound for over a year, building up content for the new network. Any HDBeat readers notice a new HD channel in their lineup today?

  • Free concert thanks to MTVs new HD station

MTVs new high definition station is set to launch on January 16th and will feature, check this out, music. That's right. Music. Better yet. They are throwing a free concert! The show will be held in Breckenridge, Colorado January 11th and 12th. "Music With Altitude" will feature Dashboard Confessional, Gary Allen, Goo Goo Dolls and some reality TV star turned recording artist named Cheyenne Kimball. The concerts are in honor of Ullr Fest, an annual week-long winter festival in Breckenridge.Ok. I did not say it was going to be a good, free concert. In case you forgot, MTVs new HD station, MHD, is going to be located in Aspen, Colorado. They have not made much other details available but I am sure we are going to see original programming that is reminiscent of HDNet's True Music. That's fine by me as I like the program a lot. Maybe MTV will even port over some of their good, but rare, programs like Cribs and...I don't think I watch anything else but Cribs. But hey, more HD stations the better!

  • G4TV vs MTV for gamers

Here at Joystiq, we've already talked about G4TV's attempts to catch gamers' attention and MTV's tentative forays into games television. GamerGod have gone one further and put the two head-to-head, with the resulting conclusion leaving MTV as the winner. Music television beating out a games channel? It seems so.One of MTV's strong points, identified by GamerGod, is the small amount of scheduled programming dedicated to games as opposed to a full-time 24/7 gaming channel. While it's true that gamers usually prefer to game rather than watch TV, it seems that this signifies the death of dedicated gaming channels as a concept, something that channels like G4TV would rather not hear.[via /.]

  • MHD (MTV HD) picks Mitsubishi as a partner

Mitsubishi has signed up to be the charter sponsor for MTV's high definition channel, due to start broadcasting next year from Vail, Colorado. This means plenty of Mitsubishi televisions on the set as well as "powered by Mitsubishi" lead-in's galore. This is no surprise since Mitsubishi and MTV previously collaborated on their 25x40' high definition screen in Times Square. Also included in the press release was information on two planned programs for the channel "MHD Top 10" and "MHD Video Stew". Yeah whatever man, just tell me when Amerie is on in high definition, I will be there with popcorn and a Big Gulp.

  • High Def MTV location and VJ announced

I have to give them credit. If I was MTV and I was starting a new high-def music channel, I'd be looking for some eye-candy for the camera. That's why you'll never see me in high-def. No, MTV never called me; instead, they went with Olympic Skier, Jeremy Bloom. Probably a smart move. When MTV announced their new HDTV music channel, MHD, they really didn't have much info at the time. Now the pieces seem to be coming together with the new VJ announcement and a studio location as well. The new show will broadcast in high-def from a glass-walled studio on Vail Mountain in Colorado. Do you think maybe if I had a ski resort in my back yard, they might have called me? Nah, me neither...
