As Vodafone prepares for another busy holiday season, it's pulling out all the stops to entice customers to activate service. Starting in November, customers in the United Kingdom can subscribe to unlimited music downloads with no additional data charges for as little as $4.02 per week. They'll have access to over a million songs from four major labels and independents as well. The service being provided by another UK company, Omnifone, which has a similar deal with Telnor of Sweden. The first phone model the service will be available on is Nokia's N95 (8GB) with more handsets to follow before the holidays.[Via mocoNews]

  • Quake ported to select Nokia Series 60 handsets

Some gaming fun that isn't N-Gage has appeared for our S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 friends today, Quake is here and judging by the vid, is looking great. User ohinkka over at allaboutsymbian.com forums has posted the goodies -- including the source -- for any die hard fans to get their hands on and all ya need to get it going is the data files from the original game. While we doubt the controls are fantastic out the gate, if nothing else, the novelty factor will be enough to see this installed on a pile of handsets. So now if somebody can get the multiplayer working, we're in for a treat for sure. Continue reading to see the vid of the game in action.[Thanks, Luca]

  • Nokia N95 for North America: get it September for $699

Bet you didn't see that coming, did you? The shock of a real, honest-to-goodness N95 with North American 3G bands becoming reality (sorry, T-Mobile, not you!) is still wearing off, and now the company's spouting off about a September release for the darned thing. As we found in our hands-on, this particular variant of the S60 superphone gets tweaked just a bit from the original -- though not as much as the bigger-screened N95 8GB -- offering a redesigned, recessed camera lens (sans protective cover), twice the RAM, dimpled music control keys, and re-upped battery capacity. Nokia claims this very special version of the N95 was made in part because it's been "extremely pleased" with response to the European N95 in these parts -- so to everyone with an N95 in your pocket right now, thanks! As we mentioned, grab it starting next month through a variety of online retailers plus Nokia's flagship stores in New York and Chicago for $699.

  • Nokia's N95 finally US bound with HSDPA

Seriously, did you ever think this day would come? Well it's official, the N95 is heading Stateside. That's right, Nokia's "multimedia computer" is finally touting HSDPA on the US-friendly 850MHz and 1900MHz bands. No more trekking to Europe or your "local" Nokia store for a data-excluded, N95 experience. Otherwise, it's still the same GPS lovin' WiFi monster we've ogled for months. Yeah, we could hardly believe it either until we went hands-on over at Engadget Mobile.

As it so often goes in this business, the adrenaline rush of a good leaked image is quickly followed by the security felt from an official press release. And so it goes... meet the 8GB Nokia N95, all in black and all official. Feels good eh? We're still talking N95 specs -- 2.8-inch display, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, GPS, microSD, and such -- only now with a hefty slab of hot, hot flash for all your media. Sure, slim is in but we can love a fatty too. Europe-first and ready for action in October for €560/$761.

Alright, ready for this? It's real. We can say this with some degree of confidence, seeing how there's one resting comfortably in our hands right now. We'll skip right past the bulk of the details here -- the handset remains largely unchanged from its European cousin, after all, which we've already seen -- and concentrate on the juicy bits that have changed to make the handset not just more palatable for an American audience, but in general, to make it a better N95. • Nokia music store, N-Gage, N81, 8GB N95 all confirmed for tomorrow

In case you haven't heard, Nokia's blowing it out tomorrow, London style. We can't be certain what exactly is going to get announced until the curtain drops, but as the date and time draw near, we're hearing whispers from across the 'nets about what we can expect. Latest across our desks is this itinerary from The Nokia Blog, detailing the day's events; from it, we can see that the N81 and 8GB N95 are both on the docket, ensuring that the high end will be well represented. Also up are the rumored music store and the revamped N-Gage platform we've been hearing a solid buzz about recently. Stay tuned, we're just a few hours away now!

The N81 slider apparently isn't the only device up Nokia's sleeve for tomorrow morning. Gearfuse scored some shots of the 8GB N95 along with the XpressMusic 5310, 5610, and 5700 series (looking positively lovely in black, may we add), all of which are presumably destined for the announcement docket. Anyone else getting pumped for the official news?

  • Nokia N95 with American 3G gets FCC'd!

We're speechless. In fact, we think we might cry -- but rest assured, they're tears of joy. Rumors of a Nokia N95 packing American HSDPA have been spreading like wildfire as of late, and we're ecstatic to see that they were totally true. Though this sucker gets down with the 850 and 1900MHz bands, it doesn't get in on the 1700MHz action, suggesting that if the T-Mobile rumor is still true, this ain't it. Though arguably not quite as attractive as the decidedly non-US 8GB N95 in black that we saw this morning, this phone's innards are pretty much the most beautiful thing we've seen all day. Nokia, we turn the floor over to you to answer questions about pricing and availability.[Via Wirelessinfo.com]

Yep, it's real. Besides the black case and the plethora of onboard storage, the phone seems largely true to the original, which means the search continues for HSDPA 850 / 1900. Looks hot, doesn't it? No word on whether it'll pick up "Music Edition" branding for launch.[Via WirelessInfo.com]

Okay, look, we want to believe this is the freshly-updated N95 with American 3G, we really do -- and it's hard to deny from these pictures that this is definitely not Your Father's N95. The battery compartment is deeper, the media buttons are contoured, and the camera lens has been recessed flush with the body. For all we know, though, this could just be the long-rumored 8GB N95 (which will likely carry "Music Edition" branding if we had to guess) with the same old 2100MHz HSDPA. Call us pessimists, but we'd much rather be pleasantly surprised than have our hopes dashed yet again. Stay tuned![Via Slashphone]

  • Is this the US Nokia N95?

    by

    08.09.2007

Yes, we realize you can already buy the N95 in US stores, but you know what we mean. This here is allegedly some sort of promotional material for the upcoming real US-spec N95, showing a few interesting changes over its older, European sibling. Though we knew US 3G was in the cards, it turns out the devil may be in the details: contrary to other evidence, it looks like the handset will support HSDPA 850 / 1900 -- AT&T's 3G bands, not T-Mobile's. The battery grows from 950mAh to a healthy 1200mAh, but to accomodate the added load, the camera's protective shutter has seemingly been removed. Growing along with the battery is the in-box microSD card, going from 512MB for the initial launch to a full 1GB. Finally, you can forget purple and beige; the US variant will apparently stick with a decidedly safer choice of black to adorn its rear. All decent changes, we figure, as long as our glorious 5 megapixel cams don't break.

  • Is Nokia readying a 3G N95 for America?

    by
    Joshua Topolsky

Nokia's N95, like many phones in America, has been a consistent letdown to those hoping to rock any decent online content on their phone, mainly because of the prohibitive EDGE data speeds which currently dominate the GSM market here (a matter of fact, no matter how much Mr. Jobs may protest). Well, it appears that at least Nokia is feeling our pain, because according to a recent GigaOM rumor, the company is readying a 3G variation of the N95 -- presumably with a US carrier in tow -- due out this September, which makes sense considering some of the company's recent shenanigans. If (and when) this happens, it should make the do-it-all phone, which boasts a 5 megapixel camera, built-in GPS, WiFi, and all sorts of multimedia functions, considerably more attractive to consumers in the States, even with its $749 price tag.

A Chinese manufacturer by the name of Yoobao decided to concoct a battery for Nokia's N95 that crosses the line of "freakishly gigantic." With stats that see capacity upped half again from the standard in-box battery (that's a total of 1,400 milliamp hours, mind you), it's anything but easy on the eyes -- but we just know there are some owners out there willing to make the sacrifice to own The N95 That Wouldn't Die.

While the rest of us sit and wait on a potential 8GB iteration, current N95 owners now have a bit more utility to look forward to care of a new firmware update. Version 12.0.013, which looks to only be available on phones with Euro product codes (0534841 and 0534844) at the moment, provides a few subtle changes that essentially get lost in the addition of Assisted GPS and the amount of RAM available. Interestingly, the full rundown of changes seems to be still rolling out, so be sure and visit the read link for the growing list and do tell if you notice alterations on your own.

Not a whole lot of new information here, but we're starting hear that the 8GB N95 that was mentioned just days ago as a potential device will in fact become a reality. Unfortunately, we're still forced to treat this "confirmation" as a rumor until Nokia fesses up to the pictured device, but if whispers prove true, it should hit outlets "shortly after Christmas," will be black in color, tout 8GB of internal capacity, and sport a slightly larger screen for good measure. Hold tight -- we're sure a confirmation (or vehement denial) will be just around the bend.[Image courtesy of Slashphone]

Per usual, we're taking this one with a throw of salt for the time being, but an interesting couple of lines from an .xml file on Nokia's site actually makes mention of an 8GB N95. Stepping back, it does indeed follow logic that Nokia would think of unveiling an 8GB handset in order to more directly compete with its newfound rivals, but until we see something more detailed than a few lines of stray code, we'll reserve judgment. So, regretting that oh-so-fresh N95 purchase yet?[Via JustAMP]

  • Nokia N95 one-ups Apple's iPhone via unrefined display 'hack'

    07.04.2007

There's no denying that we were fairly taken aback by the beauty of the iPhone's screen, but leave it to a clever (and likely bitter) N95 owner to trump Apple's best shot with his very Nokia. While not nearly as ingenious as converting the device into a mapmaker, this crude demonstration explains how to increase the screen real estate linked to the N95 if you're willing to sacrifice your left (or right) arm. Granted, the "hack" did begin with a broken N95, so strapping a portable TV onto one's forearm and utilizing the device's video output was about the only real solution within arm's reach (ahem). Like it or not, it's laced in utility, and you can catch a video of the action after the jump.[Thanks, Eirikso]
